Highlight of the season was the thrilling win over the West Point Plebes in a game dominated by fast- charging lines. Because the Army line was almost impenetrable, Don Clark had to resort to his passing game which clicked for two TD's-Don Chirlin and Ralph Redling being the receivers. The Cadets opened the season with a 20-O victory over Morrisville and a 43-0 win over Cortland, its ground offense clicking efficiently. Bob Renzi, Dick Chester, John Andrusko, Don Clark, and Ralph Redling scored all the touchdowns. The first real test was a 19-7 win over powerful Colgate. Manlius beat St. Law- rence easily in its fourth game by a 27-O count. On Homecoming Day the Cadets trounced Valley Forge 35-O. The defense, led by Bob Casciola, yielded barely a yard on the ground. The Cadets got their greatest scare of the year when they barely beat Williams T5-6. Manlius averaged 23 points per game, as men like Andrusko, Redling, Chester, and Renzi ran superbly. Clark and Misere contributed the ever-threatening passing attack. Men like Garn, Casciola, Chirlin, Tallgren, Creighton, McEachren, Gra- bosky, and Lawrence held our opponents to but two TD's during the year. Hats off to Captain Cahill and an ex- cellent, well-balanced team for the great- est season in Manlius football history! FOOTBALL , x Top to bottom: Redling around end. Touchdown. One hundred and nine- teen attended, making this the largest carnival ever. Events taking the spotlight on Friday night were a basketball game between the faculty and cadet officers, a band concert, and a square dance. Saturday morning found the guys and gals at a Penny Carnival in the gym or out on the slopes enioying winter sports. ln the afternoon, the Varsity played the Cortland JV in basketball, winning 59 to 48. The main event of the carnival was, of course, the formal dance Saturday night. The winter-land The Queen and her court. theme of decoration and the fine playing of Richard Martin's Orchestra left a lasting memory of one of the finest dances in recent years. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Queen and her court. Miss Donna Jane Wentzell, guest of Peter Williams, was crowned Queen. Miss Suzanne Ames, Miss Heidi Asper, Miss Carol Colgar, and Miss Diane Dana were honored as princesses in her court. They were the guests of Richard Williams, Richard Lindsay, Bruce Church, and Royal Larson, respectively. On Sunday, Chapel and church services were attended, and in the afternoon the carnival came to an end with a tea dance in Knox Hall. The Queen is presented to the battalion and guests. For the first time in many years, the weather re-arranged the program planned for the annual Father and Son Day. A tennis match, baseball game, and retreat parade were rained out, but what must have been one of the coldest, wet-est track meets on record was run off. In the place of the other outdoor attractions, the band gave a concert in Knox Hall. The usual indoor program, including a tea for mothers at the residence of General Barker, and the faculty reception for fathers at Phoenix Tavern, gave pleasant opportunity to enioy a get together long anticipated. In the early evening approximately five hun- dred and sixty cadets, Dads, and guests were seated at the banquet in the gym. This is the MD largest number ever to attend this annual event. And a most enjoyable occasion it was. The food was good, and efficiently served, the pro- gram was varied and interesting, and all-in-all, it was a gathering we will long remember. Dr. Eric Faigle, Dean of the Syracuse University College of Liberal Arts was toastmaster. He en- livened the program with several good jokes and presented a series of short, to-the-point speeches by Col. Swaim, Mr. Sedgwick, Mr. MacDonald, and General Barker. The band entertained with a musical interlude, and the Glee Club sang a short program which brought to a close another pleasant annual event. Muay 64544 One of the most enioyable dances of the school year was sponsored by the Varsity Club in its annual Cabaret held on May 22. Departing from a custom of recent years, the club imported entertainment in the form of the Little Hour Show of a Liverpool High School group. Anfnkav R. .mmf I-Inn Duane Wadsworth, Director of The Little Hour and performer. Their program consisted of a series of clever pantomimes of popular recordings and was Thoroughly enioyed by the cadets and their guests. Music for the dance was played by a well-known Syracusan, Carl Silfer and his orchestra. The club members, under the direction of Bob Renzi, Master of Ceremonies, acted as waiters or otherwise served their guests on this ever-popular occasion. Grand Finale- The Little Hour. H Captain Erichs, Lt. Davidson, Lt. Hence, Lt. Sullivan, 'lst Sergeant I Durkee. On Friday, June ll, C Company realized an ambition which we had held all year-we were named the Color Company. For the fifth consecutive year, C Company was awarded the Military Trophy for proficiency in military activities and competitive drill. This string of awards sets a new record in the history of the company, a fact which we celebrated loud and long when the trophy was presented. Our company teams made a good bid for the Intramural Trophy, but were nosed out by A Company. We were Champions in A League football and B League basketball. Ten men of C were named on all-company teams: Koger, Wexler, Perkins, McCauley, and Bevard in A League football, Frezza and Sullivan in B League football, Pordum and Wright in A League basketball, and Conkey in B League basketball. g The company was represented on Varsity teams by Northrop, Cambo, Andrusko, Misere, Morey, Stoecker, Wertheimer, Connors, and Sechtman. We worked hard for the Academic Plaque, but had to bow to B Company for that honor. Jon Ives, as Head Boy of the Upper School, and Hal Erichs as runner- up, brought top individual honors to the company. We had four enjoyable company parties: at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and Commencement time. This has truly been a banner year for us. We wish to thank Captain Cahill for his leadership, guidance, and interest in our welfare and our accomplishments, and we are raring to go for another great year in '54-'55. I'- iff-NT is ll TAN x X 2 6 l ill. ll. ,4 X was it 74 This year Headquarters Company received no awards, plaques, or trophies. Individuals in the company won some high honors, but as a company we were not able to rise to the occasion often enough to take company honors. Jim Gilmour, honored at Commencement as Head Boy of the Lower School, brought to the company one of the two highest awards of the school. Varsity teams were greatly aided by the efforts of Broughton, Church. Curtis, Dibblee, Ettinger, Gorke, Grabosky, Keough, Larson, and Smith. As usual we had our troubles in company sports, but in spite of our competitive disadvantage we were champions in B League football. Several of our athletes won places on all-company teams. Nielsen and Hider made all-company A League football, Evans, Mosher, and Castle were named to the B League foot- ball team, and Mosher won a position on the B League basketball team. As a marching band, we had an unusually full year, playing and marching in parades in Syracuse, Utica, Manlius Village, and Fayetteville. The concert band performed in Syracuse, Moravia, Sherburne, Camden, and at School. A distinctive feature of each concert, and of course on parade, was the new set of Regimental Drums. The drums were given to the band by General Barker and have greatly added to the band's snappy appearance. The money macle by HQ in running the Penny Carnival went toward a display case in memory of the late Mrs. Estelle Barker. On the average it has been a great year and a tremendous amount of fun- perhaps too much fun and too little work for company prestige. We wish to thank Mr. Milliman and Mr. Jolly for their efforts on our behalf and to look forward to making next year a Headquarters year. EDWARD STALFORD Editor HAVERSACK For the first time in many years, accident has prevented the presen- tation of a major event of the school year in THE HAVERSACK. We were unable to use any of the many negatives exposed during the Senior Hop, and despite our best efforts we were unable to secure from private sources coverage that would do iustice to that important event. We are sorry. Otherwise, our work proceeded in the usual pattern of planning the book, securing pictorial coverage, designing the cover, obtaining pa- tronage, working up layout and copy, and finally assembling the book following commencement activities. Senior portraits were made by the Van Dervort Studio. Other pic- tures were made by Mr. Jenks, to whom we again give our thanks for his patience and skill in providing the many pictures which constitute the record we have tried to present. The staff has clone its best to plan and produce a good record ot the year. We hope you like THE HAVERSACK for '54. WINDMILL This year WINDMILL produced five issues through the efforts of a small but hard-working staff, headed by Bob Woggon. Most of the sports writing was done by the two Drakes, Charles and Henry, and Phil Jetter. Others who wrote for the paper were: Fraser, Graham, Tamblyn, G., Simpson, Martin, Waterbury, Wolf, Wog- gon, Towle, Lindsay, Parker, Wagner, and Dahl. Work of the staff ended with the annual surprise issue covering Commencement events and awards. This issue was distributed to cadets ROBERT WOGGON and guests at the completion of Commencement exercises in Knox Hall. New members clamored for admittance after the first ioint concert with the Cazenovia Junior College Glee Club at Christmas time. The combined clubs also gave a television program from station WHEN in Syracuse.
