Throughout the years he has devoted him- self to the betterment of his students, both as teachers and as coach. During his fifteen years at Manlius he has influenced the lives of many cadets through his able guidance. As a teacher of modern languages he has distinguished himself as one of the best we have ever studied under. It is with best wishes and our heartiest thanks that we, the Class of '53, dedicate this 84th Anniversary Issue of THE HAVERSACK to HENRY SORENSON WOODS A 'V 'fb D ',Xf? '-' f r 'ix 3' v. Highlight of the season was the game with the Williams Freshmen, played here. This game found the team reaching their peak in blocking, tack- ling, and running. Scoring five times for a modern record in Manlius foot- ball, Bob Kyasky gave a demonstration of running the like of which has not been seen here for many years. The game was hard played and clean all the way, but Williams found our line too strong, and our backs too fast. Colgate was too strong for us, run- ning up a one-sided score on their home field. Valley Forge handed us our other defeat at Valley Forge, avenging a defeat at our hands last year. The final game was played against West Point Prep at Stewart Field. Man- lius was rolling in high gear and scored early and often. The line rose to great heights in holding for downs twice on the one-yard line. Congratulations to Captain Cahill and a fine squad for a thrilling and successful season! FOOTBALL Top to bottom: Kyasky scores. Kyasky stopped at Colgate. Kyasky scores number five! They deserve a great deal of credit for their team spirit and de- termination under somewhat trying conditions. Without a home pool, the team was very for- tunate to be able to practice four nights a week in Syracuse University's new pool. Handicapped by lack of sufficient conditioning, the Manlius swimmers won none of their four meets, but did provide stiff competition for their more experi- enced opponents. th, Hill, Wheeler, Mr. Lockhart, Coach. Taking first place in their respective events were Mason Smith in the lOO yard breast stroke, Kool Ulrich in the lOO yard free style, and the 200 yard Free Style Relay Team composed of Jon Trembley, Tony Arce, Jim McCauley, and Tom Riley. Close seconds were chalked up in individual events by these and other members of the team. Although the meet scores do not look impressive, we feel that the season has been successful and that Manlius can be proud of its swimming team's performance in l952-53. On Friday afternoon, February 6, the largest number of guests to attend a carnival in recent years occupied quarters in Thompson Hall. The evening pro- gram featured a basketball game between the Varsity and the Cortland JV team. After the game, the band entertained with a short concert, and the evening closed with a square dance. Saturday's program included a penny carnival in the gym, a basketball game between the faculty and some cadet experts, a Varsity game with the R.P.l. Frosh, and of course, the big event-the carnival ball. Freddy Martin and his orchestra provided music in a colorful setting for a dance enjoyed by everyone. High point of the evening was the choosing ot the Queen, Miss Alice Shannon, guest ot Bill Hecker. On Sunday, chapel services were held, and in the afternoon the carnival came to an end with a tea dance in Knox Hall. The Queen is presented to the battalion and guests. Behind the Ump as Wyckoff pitches. 7 Fw For the first time, the Father and Son Banquet was held on Post. The school arranged for caterers to serve smorgasbord in the new gymnasium, in a depar- ture from the old custom of having the banquet in a Syracuse hotel. Approxi- mately four hundred and seventy-five attended the dinner. O:f this number, one hundred and fifty were fathers, the largest group ever to 'attend a battalion dinner. The program for the day included a baseball game, tra match in the afternoon. Following these events, a full dress retreat parade was Faculty reception for fathers. ,,,...-r ,pun-r0 held, after which tne faculty held a reception for fathers in Phoenix Tavern. At seven o'clock, dinner was served in the gym where the program of the evening included short talks by General Barker, Mr. MacDonald, and Maior Swaim. Entertainment was furnished by the band, the Glee Club, and the color movie of a year at Manlius. And so came to an end another pleasurable Father and Son Day. Charles Sharp throws the discus. COMPANY We ot A Company are very proud ot our many accomplishments during the past year, At Commencement time, the climax of our competitive year came when we were awarded the Color Company Trophy as the best all-around company. We were tirst in intramural sports, and second in academic achievement. Socially we had two fine parties, one at Christmas and one in June. The Non- Coms Club attended a basketball game in Syracuse and held a picnic at Green Lakes. Our athletes made a fine showing in Varsity sports. Kielland, Rojas, Kyasky, Sharp, Capone, Robinson, Tatich, Thoin, Archambault, Schautz, Strumph, Trem- bley, Smith, and Beak all were outstanding Varsity competitors. We placed several men on All-Company intramural Teams. ln football: Trembley, Schautz, M. Smith, Lawton, and O'Brien, in basketball: Kyasky, Logan, Thoin, and D. Robinson. Under the capable leadership of Mr. Maier, A Company enioyed a fine year and really proved itself as the Color Company. COMPANY COMMANDANT Mr. J. Tom Wilber, Costa, DeVincent, Green, and Wagner gave a big lift to the football team. Jim Wagner was also outstanding in basketball, and Rick Wyckoff was the mainstay of the pitching staff in baseball. As usual we placed many players on the intramural All-Company teams. In A League Football, Kuimiian, Sheldon, and Sen made it for B. In B League Football our all-stars were Urbancic, Dykeman, and Bowne. We were co-champions in B League Basketball. This makes our B League team tops for five consecutive years. In intramural basketball we also had our share of All-Company honors, l-leffron, Hinds, and Davis winning places on All-Company teams. Socially our year included highly successful parties at Christmas and in June. Academically, we had our troubles as a company, but next year we will try to make B top company in studies. We gave the finest demonstration of drill in company competition which B Company has presented in many years. Our hard preparation for comp earned enthusiastic applause, and many thought we were the best company on the field. We are determined to take the trophy for B next year. We wish to thank Mr. Grimes for his patient leadership and for his unfailing interest in the good of Company B. Thanks, Mr. Grimes, for everything! Tying a record last established in 1900, C Company, for the fourth consecutive year was awarded the Military Trophy for proficiency in military activities and competitive drill. This proficiency was also demonstrated through the appearance of the C Company Drill Team in an exhibition at Syracuse University on R.O.T.C. Day. Academically, we were not able to take top honors as a company, but Hal Erichs was named Head Boy, and Gene Sullivan was Head Boy of the Lower School with Jon Ives cited as runner-up for this high honor. Men of C Company thus took the highest individual academic awards given by the school. Our A League Football team became champions of that league, and we had many players honored with All-Company ratings: Hatfield, S., Erichs, Perkins, Bistrian, Dougherty, Baratta, and Farnan winning places. We contributed heavily to Varsity squads with the services of the following players: Stark, Baratta, Gam, Maxwell, Axtell, Foley, Hecker, MacLaren, Ahrendts, Pick, Gonzales, Broughton, and Aronson. Four company parties were held this year, at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Vacation, and in June. The Non-Coms had a picnic at Green Lakes as a final event in the social life of the company. lt has been a good year for C Company, thanks to Captain Cahill, our Com- mandant, and an efficient staff of officers. HEADQUARTERS COMPANY As usual, Headquarters Company had a very successful year academically. We had the highest company average for the year, for the second consecutive year, and at Commencement time we were awarded the new Academic Plaque, given this year for the first time, in recognition of our success. Our military standing was also high, and all year we gave the rifle companies real competition for the trophy. In intramural athletics our teams were lacking in personnel and had a great deal of difficulty in defeating other teams. We tied with B Company for first place in the B League Basketball standings, but were not able to take top honors in other sports. All-Company honors went to Church, Hider, Howard, Keough, Larson, Nielsen, and Wetzel. Many men of H,Q. showed excellence in athletics and were valuable to Varsity teams. Varsity players were Chequer, Church, Crawford, Henion, Howard, Keough, Larson, Parrish, and Wheeler. There were only two company parties this year, as most of the company fund was used for furnishing the company room. These parties were highly successful, however, and will be long remembered. The band suffered a great loss when Mr. Weit left in September. However, the fine spirit of our new Commandant, Mr. Milliman, kept the company in top shape. We wish to express our thanks both to Mr. Weit and Mr. Milliman for all they did for us. Mr. Jolly, our new director, brought the concert band and the marching band to a high peak of performance, and we pledge him our full-hearted cooperation for the band of next year., -P' ,,wggf7fSQq3kjf3j',gL,, Y W, ,N 5 X , , ' Y? BOB MILLER Editor .ww 76 HAVERSACK CLUB As usual, club activities took the form of planning and producing the '53 edition. Early meetings were given over to laying out the general structure of the book, securing patronage, photographic coverage of tall events, Senior portraits, biographies, and the like. ln the winter term we designed the cover and specific page lay- outs. The spring term was devoted to completing the plan and final assembly. Once again, we wish to thank Mr. Jenks for his photography. We think pictures make a yearbook, and we cer- tainly owe him much. It is no mean task to produce a yearbook. We've done our best, and we hope you like THE HAVERSACK for '53. WINDMILL sf f we With a smaller staff than usual, much of the work of producing the paper fell upon too few shoulders to carry out the entire schedule of publications planned. Almost single-handed, Mike l-lorigan handled sports coverage. The services of Bob Woggon, Ted Muller, Dick Montgomery, Joel Aronson, Dick Englander, and Emmet Greenleaf combined to give WINDMILL the necessary coverage for our issues. They deserve credit for a iob well clone. 4 Following our custom of the past few years, we distributed Our final Commencement Issue to cadets and guests minutes after the awards were made and the ceremonies completed in Knox Hall.
