BARKBR, U.S.A. CRETlDJ Superintendent Through the busy days of your cadet life, you have had little opportunity to reflect upon the signihcance of that period. However, I am sure that, in future years, as you look back upon the associations which are commemorated in this hook, you will realize that they had a very important part in shaping your career. We who have had the privilege of working with you at Maimlius hope that we have huilded well. Soon you will he players on that great stage which is the world of men, where 'Lbehind the cur' tain's mystic fold, the glowing future lies unrolledf' Mziy you there play a man's part! Our best wishes go with you. 7 X DR. ARCHIBALD C. Cootinoii Headmaster Graduation marks your official transition from boyhood to manhood. You are entering a larger world, where opportunities will be greater, competition keener, responsibilities heavier. Do so courageously. You have proved your worth at Manlius. Face the future conndently. Life is a challenge. Meet it head on. Nothing that is worth doing is easy. Those who shirk, who attempt to sidestep the difficult and to avoid responsibility, do so at the price of their selffrespect. Lasting satisfaction springs from doing one's best however unfavorable the odds. 1-J., af ,., l h all Iwi ,mzifli W 2 ' E 31 HI E W? The inspecting ofhcers were: Col. Josiah T. Dalbey, Capt. Eugene W. Baxter, and lst Lt. William A. Cummings. In addition to the govern' ment inspectors, there were three distinguished visitors present during the inspection: Col. Rittgers, P.M.SEarT. at Syracuseg Col. Smith, P.M.SEiT. at Cornellg and Lt. Col. Pricer, P.A.SEffT. at Colgate. Our preparations for GI. this year were ham- pered by had weather. lvlany of our drill and held problem exercises were held in the rain, and it was an uncomfortable and difficult readiness all 'round Falling as it did on Mondziy and Tuesday, we were not even let off academic classes this yearfit was all polish on our own time, and what a time! We will not soon forget the scrubbing and shining, and waxing, and boning, and groaning and moaning. Life can be beautiful, but not around G.I. Under the watchful eyes of the inspectors, each company was examined generally and specifically. Company was examined in close order drill. B Company demonstrated interior guard duty and rifle marksmanship. C Company was tested in combat formations, and Headquarters Company presented physical development exercises. Inside, the usual classfroom examination was held and our knowledge of things military was sorely tested. On Tuesday noon, however, all was overg relax' ation set in and we gradually began to feel good. We had, of course, those immediately after doubts about how we had done, but as the jitters wore off, we began to think that we had done a good job and that, once again, the Honor School rating would be ours. At Commencement, General Barker an' nounced that Manlius had again been given Honor School rating. This means that we have won this honor more times than any other military school in the country. Of the eight games played, six were against col' lege freshman teams and two were played with prep school teams. We outscored the opposition 198 points to 46. Only three teams were able to score against us: the Princeton Freshmen, the Amherst Freshmen, and Aquinas. Outstanding in an offense that had both power and speed was the running of Ted Vurheff, Boh Dillingham, Boh Taylor, Ed Monahan, and Boh Kinslow. At the end positions, jack Edwards and Tom Cappelletti made our passing attack a constant threat as they took many a Kinslow pass to gain or score. On defense, the great work of Tom Formica and Paul Walker at tackle, Skip Reynolds and Capt. Frank Thomas at guard, and Pete Stevens and Dick Schult at center gave the team an outstanding record. The power of the line on offense was also impressive with great bloeking hy Dave Duff and Pete Stevens clearing the way for the power run' ning of Ed Monahan. The spirit and drive of the other members of the squad were a potent factor throughout the season, and much credit must go to their efforts in adding sustained drive to the offense and power in defense. ll VARSITY FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Ivfanlius lvfanlius Ivfanlius Ivfanlius Ivfanlius lvlanlius Ivfanlius lvlanlius Buffalo Freshmen 0 Clarkson Freshmen 0 R.P.I. Victories over the Cornell, Hobart, Williams, Cortf land, and R.P.I. Freshman teams highlighted the season. In a spirited overtime period in the now defunct Dodge Gym, the cadets defeated one of the best freshman teams in the East, Cornell, by a 7770 score. This was the best game of the season. For his fine offensive work in clearing the backboards, jack Haggerty was selected as the most valuable player of the squad. In a season cut short because of cancellations due to some colleges dropping freshman baseball, the cadets managed to salvage three wins of the nine games played. Don Shambo was the winning pitcher in each instance. Highlight of the season was the splendid win against Aquinas in Rochester, 4'1. The team was handicapped in the early spring practices because of inclement weather and Govern' ment Inspection. At a vote taken by the squad after the end ofthe season, Ed Monahan, regular catcher for the past two years, was elected the most valuable player of the team and awarded the Smith Baseball Trophy. Competition, this year, was limited owing to snow conditions at Mzinliusg but trips were better than usual. We went to Snow Ridge at Turin twice for training trips and to Lake Placid for an informal downhill race with Northwood School. The outstanding trip was to Middle' bury College for the interfprep school champion' ship. We finished sixth out of seven competing teams, but because we were not ready for the jump at Middlebury could not score high as a team. Stuart Bowne took fourth place in slalom for our best performance in competition. Two competitive slalom runs were held with Syracuse Freshmen of which we won one. We also won a competitive run with a Syracuse fraternity. The Rifle Team fired in five regular matches this year in addition to competing for trophies awarded by William Randolph Hearst and the First Army. We Hred two mail-matches: one with Admiral Farragut Academy, and one with St. Bona' Venture College, losing both by close scores. Shoulder-tofshoulder matches against N.Y.M.A. and Cornell Freshmen resulted in a similar out' come. Outstanding scorers for Manlius were R. Beck and Shambo. 46 The Soccer Team played a schedule of six games, principally with college j.V. teams. Of these, we won three, giving Manlius its best record for this sport in several years of com' petition. We defeated the Hamilton j.V.'s once, and Lakemont twice. We lost to Cornell twice and to R.P.l. once. So good was the play of some of the members of the squad that merit awards of major letters were made. The players receiving this distincf tion were: E. Nucete, R. Murphy, Val Kielland, Wetzel, and Palis. This year the Swimming Team produced a consistent high pointfscorer in Don Braasch, but the necessary second and third place points were not forthcoming in enough meets to give us any victories. We dropped two close matches to Cortland, lost to Albany and the superior Colgate Freshf men. Swimming two meets per week against teams with greater depth of top performers proved our undoing. Our best performance was against the strong Colgate team. Braasch took first place in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events, and Horstmyer wallred away with the breaststroke honors. -IT ist row: Pinerua, Lubowski, Heisler, Bruzual, Rojas 2nd row Sanchez G Fernandez, Wetzel, R. Our hest meet was with the strong R.P.l. Freshman team which we def feated 7lf5l. Coach Sedgwick and the squad wish to thank Mr. McCaffrey for his help in training the team. He has been a tire' less worker and an inspiration for the squad, and his services are deeply appref ciated. The raqueteers played matches against the Colgate Freshmen, the Corf nell Freshmen, and the Hamilton j.V's. The calihre of such opposition was a hit too hig for us, hut some spirited sets were fought nevertheless. The squad consisting of Farher, Han' son, Hotmann, Merrill, Lehmann, Lewis, and Smith showed continuing improvement and gained much worth' while experience against really prolif cient opponents. Although we had little hope of victory, we played our hardest and enjoyed some good matches. it TENNHITEAM J. V.B SHETB LL The Junior Varsity Basketball team played a four game schedule, winning three ofthe games and losing one. We beat the Aquinas J.V. team, and they beat us for a split on the two games played with them. Our other opponent was Pebble Hill. We beat them twice for a clean sweep of that series. Outstanding for Manlius were Dave Usherwood and Tom Conroy. Beak, Hatfield. The Hnal record for junior Varsity Baseball shows two victories, one tie, and one loss. We played two games with Pebble Hill, winning one and tying the other. With our other oppof nent, the local high school, we won one game and lost one. WILIJE T5 The Wildcats played a four game schedule: Two games with Lakemont and two with Pebble Hill. The Hrst game at Lakemont was close until the final minutes when Lakemont scored a one touchdown victory. In the return game here, Lakemont outscored us by three touchdowns. The Hrst Pebble Hill game resulted in a lop' sided loss owing to the greater weight of the opponents. In the return game here, we added weight through using a few willing B league boys, and beat them 3242. Outstanding players on defense were Single' ton and Lawton, on offense, Isham, Hence, and Beck. Largely through the interest of Clint Blume and Whitey Anderson, wrestling was revived as a sport at Manlius. The expert services of Mr. Connor were secured for the coaching ofa small but enthusiastic squad, and matches were scheduled with Syracuse Frosh and Colgate Frosh. Lack of experience caused us to drop these matches, but it is hoped that the interest created this year in wrestling will continue until the cadets are able to hold their own with col- lege freshman teams. Study hours came as usual in the warm quiet evening of May 16, but studies were soon for' gotten in the discovery of black evilflooking smoke seeping from the windows in the Dodge Gymnasium. Cadets who tried to put out the hre in its early stages were driven from the building by the dense and dangerous smoke. ln a matter of minutes the hill companies knew, and within a very short time everyone roundabout came to see the early promise of an awesome spectacle. As the crowd gathered, smoke could be seen EY along the length ofthe building at the eaves f a very had sign, and doubly bad because water pressure was low in the village that night. The lvianlius Fire Department arrived quickly and began the attack, but the fire grew strong inside the building and the thick brownfblack smoke kept the men outside the building. When the fire departments of DeWitt and Fayetteville arrived, the smoke had increased in volume at every point of issue. It became apparent that the fire would win: the Gym would go. Soon the fire had eaten through a part of the FIRE roof, and with a roar burst through wall and roof at once to leave no doubt of the loss to be witnessed by thousands. Withiri a short time the north and south walls fell in, and the roof. Only front and hack walls contained the inferno, but they held so that Verbeek Hall, the hospital, and the nearby houses were not seriously endangered. lt was then a fire feeding on itselfg and alf though it burned furiously, it became clear that with reasonable vigilance the Gym would be its only victim. ,- we So ended a memorable day of this year. For thirtyfseven years the Dodge Gym had served many an athlete and many a student as the scene of athletic, social, and examination activities. It was a thoughtful and saddened battalion that watched it burn. At Year's end plans for a new gym have been drawn, and every effort will be made to have the playing surfaces finished in time for the winter season next year. And so, once again the Phoenix becomes a symbol with real meaning. 5 'X 'x 1 N 'I ,.-,rg .- - . 1 P . 55- U wav! It was interesting to note that spectator judgment was hir from unanif mous this year, and staunch supporters of each company were quite content that their company had won an admittedly close decision. The iirst company to drill was A company. It set a very high mark for the following companies to equal, let alone surpass. One or two minor slips in the free competition were all that could he chalked up against a fine performance. B Company was next on the Held, and like A Company, put on a splendid demonstration in the required drill. The MB Company free drill was exceptionally well done, and concluded with an impressive Queen Ann Salute to the expressed def light of the spectators. C Company came last to the field, and equalled the excellent performances of the two forefrunning companies in the required maneuvers. Its free drill featured a difhcult marching manual, well executed, and enthusiastically received hy the spectators. In presenting the trophy, Col. Ivianess emphaf S . x 'x A Company in competition sized the closeness of the respective scores, and inf dicated that it was the final maneuver which earned the necessary winning points. The annual Winter Carnival, social high point ofthe winter season, was as usual a great success. Festivities began on Friday afternoon with a tea dance at Knox Hall. Dick Martin and his orchestra made music, the cadets and their guests made friends, and everyone made merry as the carnival got under way with this highly successful dance. Friday night the dance enthusiasts gathered again in Knox Hall and enioyed the music of Mike Lovell and his band in that strenuous athletic actif vity known as the square dance. The Haversack Board Plans for this book were drawn up early in the year. We wanted primarily a pictorial pres' entation of the year, but we also wanted more flexibility in design and format. We think we have succeeded in securing these qualities in the 1951 Hauersaclq. It was also decided to make some changes in the arrangement of the material which constif tutes the presentation of a year at Manlius. For example, we moved the intrafmural record out of the company section and into a section by itf self. This change allowed for a more complete coverage of intrafmural athletics than heretofore. The senior section was refdesigned to give change and difference to this book. Other changes will be noticed, and we feel that they have made this one of the best editions of Harefsack to appear in recent years. The Board wishes here to express a double thanks: first to Mr. Sherman for the constant guidance, advice, and untiring effort, without which our Havevsack could not have been prof duced, and second to Mr. Jenks for the excellence I-NIEHS EH of the special photography, action shots, and on-thefspot pictures to be noted throughout the book. Vic Hanson, Editor 81 WI ILL Outstanding in the activities of Windmill this year was the suggestion through its editorial pages that company competition occur in all Neal Allen. Editor --.b 'U-4- W ' , The Windmill Staff Kinney, Jannini, Harrington, N. Allen, Mr. Maier fields of endeavor throughout the school year. 'This means that instead of basing the competif tion on competitive drill only all companies would compete in academic standing, athletic accom' plishment, and military achievement. It was felt that such a change would make company com' petition more meaningful and productive in all ways. We are happy to report that the idea has received support to the extent that in all prob' ability some such system for competition will be instituted next year. A new policy was instituted for Wiridmill this year in that advertising was solicited for the paper. Our efforts were wholly local in scope, and it is planned to keep them so for next year, with the possibility of national advertising in prospect for year after next. Outstanding personal contribution to the work ofthe paper was made by Neal Allen, both in news and editorial writing, Much credit is due him for a fine job. , I ' iff- l me ms-F' 9 fx ,' Qi, The Varsity Club ., A , . , . B The highlight event in the activity of the Varsity Club was its annual Cabaret, one of the best in recent years, held in Knox Hall on May 26. Pete Stevens introduced the Hrst number in which the sons of Hopalong Cassidy, Hotmann Small, Horstmyer, Havill, Van Hall, and Schult pedalled their tricycles madly over the plains, and in true cowboy style sang We're Sons of Fathers of Depleted Wallets . Petite Madamoiselles, Hanson and Moriarty, sang the glories of Kilroy the Kaydetng and that glamorous hefman, Dillingham, bedecked in medals extolled his own virtues in song. Reynf olds, Teta, Dolce, and Monahan were a mixed quartet, with Teta's Look for the Silver Lining ,introducing silver statuary of all Varsity sports. Pete Stevens, President The supreme grace of the evening was joe Seranni whose portrayal of a water nymph was most gloriously challenged by the fragile lovelif ness of the water sprites: Stevens, Kinslow, Cappelletti, R. Allen, Anderson, Murphy, Taylor, Duff, Mossop, and Zeigler. A choral finale of Johnny Kaydetu and variaf tions on the Go Down Moses theme ended a show of which the Varsity Club of 1951 is proud. The Trumpet Quartet This year the Concert Band played as part of a program featuring jerry Colona in Syracuse and gave concerts in Elmira, Wolcott, lvlanlius, and Rochester, Highlights of its concert program included such nninlwers as Sympliimy m Bffliit and Overture Debimiiire, together with a group of Victor Herherts favorites and lighter works such as Lady of Spam. The Swing Band was a popular part of the activities ofthe hand. Witli Lehmann and Kingf ston on the trumpets, Hickey playing sax, Sisson the tromhone, Page the drums, and King the piano, a jumping Jive suhfhand was formed known as the Dixieland Combination. Owing to lack of time to work up a suitable repertoire, the Swing Band had to refuse several bids for engage' ments to play at dances. Final effort of the hand was a onefhour conf cert preceding company competition, and a marching demonstration included formed letters within military maneuvers.
