Foreword To picture Manlius through the years. and adequately to re- cord our life here during this eightieth year have been the challenge and the task ol' this book. XVe have tried to accept the challenge. hut the adequacy of the task inust lie in the imag- ination and ineinory stirred by our record rather than in our ability to show, within the confines ol' one book. the long for- ward march ol' our school. It is our hope that you will find here. in later years. a clear echo ol' earlier days and a stiniulus to nieniories of your own days- the work. the play, the friends that have woven Manlius into the fabric of our lives. T?2?ER SACK N, x I Q-iff ' pas 'F' H4 DEDIC T10 X svgg ' N ? From the time when he hrst took his post as Professor of Military Science and Tactics and Commandant of Cadets, we have felt that he knew our problems and dilhculties as well as the needs of the battalion. His understanding, his firmness and fairness in the discharge of his duties sprang from dual knowl- edge of his task because he was himself a cadet from 1929 to 1931 and because he gave front line service in WVorld Yvar II, hrst as an Infantry Battalion Commander, and later as an In- fantry Regimental Commander. W'ith admiration for his ac- complishments, with respect for his abilities, and with gratitude for 11is leadership, we, the members of the Class of '49, dedicate this 80th Anniversary Issue of THE HAVERSACK to L1EU'I'IiNANi1' COLONEL DONALD C. The inspecting officers were Colonel Crawford and Lieutenant Colonel Coyle of the New York-New jersey Military District and Lieutenant Colonel Corley' of Head- quarters, First Army, Governors Island. School was dismissed Monday the 25th, preceding the inspection in order to give plenty ol time to make our last minute prep- arations. This was a happy day for the Cadets since it meant that we could switch lrom the strenuous and boresome pastime of sleeping through classes and study' hour to the easy and exciting chores of scrubbing walls ol rooms, waxing floors, and reading the MS. hooks. It meant that we were free from lixlended Order Field Pl'0lllClIl. the iron hand ol' the teachers for a lew days, only to lind that we had been placed in the merciless hand ol' Colonel Clayman and his laithlnl aides. the MS. Sergeants and Cadet Orlicers. At 9 o'clock 'lhursday morning the inspec- tion began with a field inspection and then a review. At ll:l5 A Company was examined on close order drill. B Company on extended order drill, C Company on interior guard duty and Headquarters Company on physical development exercises. Each of the com- panies put on an outstanding performance in their respective fields. Lieutenant Colonel Clayman was well pleased with the work ol the Battalion. YVe, too. were conlident that we had done a good ioh. The leelings ol' all ol' us were instilled when we learned. later in the Spring term. that we had earned once again the distinction ol Honor School. fTop righll Phxsical Drill Inspection. g'l.nzt'f'rl l.t. The passing of Mario Red Delsucia was remarkable throughout the season. The hard, tricky running of Always on time Dettore generated many a thrill. Also outstanding this year was the line play. The tackles, Dickerman and Guardino, charged and tackled with real au- thorityg often they were the first two down under punts. Pete Stevens and Brains Bunker played smashing games at guard. The ends blocked well, and recovered many an enemy fumble through their heads up play. Gene Renzi, Mr. Dependable himself, was the versatile member of the standing game at either team, playing an out- guard or halfback. After the last game, Pete Stevens was Big Red of 1949. SYLvr:sTr:R ROBERT V TAM.-xR1 IJONALD XVEBB B Compan B Company this year under the compe- tCl1t direction of our new commandant, Cap- tain Cahill, has completed one of the most successful years ol' its 80-year history. The boys ol' B started and ended 1948-49 in a blaze of glory. B Company cadets were lound representing the school and company in every phase ol' school life. The coordina- tion, prowess, and zeal shown on the athletic lields were aptly carried over into the drill, academic endeavors, and the spirit constantly shown within the without the halls of dear old Hadley. Captain Cahill. with the able support of efhcient officers and non-coms, has turned B Company into a unit meriting praise and respect from the entire faculty and student body. The most important phase ol' school lite at Manlius is scholastics. During the school year, B Company was always at or near the top in scholastic averages and finished the year with the highest scholastic average. X'Vhen the time for school work came, the boys ol' B Company devoted their un- divided attention to it. At commencement time the Head Boy ol' the school was XVilliam A. Mayhew, a member of B Company. Head Boy is the highest award which the school makes in recognition ol' outstanding achieve- ment. Another member ol' B Company, Ralph Slayton, was only surpassed by one cadet in becoming Head Boy olf the lower school. B Company received great coimnendation from the Military Department for its excel- lent performance in presenting a practical application ol' modern warfare tactics during Government Inspection. The condition ol' the barracks, the drill, and the deportment ol' B Company during the inspection were all important factors in making our school an honor school. From start to Iinish the spirit ol' B Company was high. Each cadet was determined to do his best in Company Competition. 'I'he presence ol a majority ol the fathers of B Company cadets at the second lfiillllfl and Son Banquet, which was held at Sclnallts in Syracuse on May 14, made it the most out- standing social event ol' the year. XVe enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner lollowed by speeches by General Barker, Dean Dillingham, Colonel Clayman, and XVhitey Anderson, a lormer member ol' B Company who is to coach varsity lootball at Manlius next lall. At the banquet, the lathers graciously contributed toward a bus which would provide transporta- tion for the school's various athletic teams. A non-coms' club was lormed near the begin- ning ol the year. During the lirst lew weeks ol' its operation, several privates were ushered into its midst to hear suggestions pertaining to the improvement ol' their conduct. All was not work lor the Non-Coms Club, however. Two parties were held in the King Club, one ol' them being a record dance during NVinter Carnival. A Non-Coms banquet. was held at '1'obin's in Syracuse at which Colonel Clay- man and Captain Cahill were present. The boys ol' B Company fought hard on the athletic lields. B Company was well represented on the varsity football squad with a total ol twelve members. Three boys ol' B Company were selected for the all-company football team while three were selected lor the all-company basketball team. B Com- pany took first place in B league basketball and second place in golli while .Iohn Hoegerl seized the honors by winning the battalion ping pong tournatnent. The boys ol' B Company are to be commended for their line work in athletics for when they won a game, they won it fairly and without overconfidence, and when they lost a game, they displayed line sportsmanship and were determined to work just tl1at much harder in the next game. Immediately alter the final parade. the boys ol' B Company gathered on the area in lront ol' Hadley Hall in a circle with joined hands in order to sing again for the last time the traditional parting song' ol' B Company, Out O'er the Valley . C Company etteville Inn. Captain McFarlane's father furnished the entertainment and programs for the affair. XfVe had a fine supper, speeches by honored guests, and a movie afterwards: and, all in all, it was a great success. The company parties were also highly suc- cessful. Altogether, we had three of them. VVe all had a lot of fun at them. YVe have only person to thank for the fine company that we have and that is Captain Sedgwick. The ping-pong table was in the smoking room all during the winter months. Our champion was Newt Nelson, who, unfor- tunately, only took third in the battalion. Although had a swimming team, none of the other companies were so fortunate, so we went undefeated in swimming again this year. The biggest event of the spring term was Govermnent Inspection. Company again demonstrated interior guard duty which we are sure helped Manlius win Honor School again. A non-coms' party was held, more or less to celebrate G. I. The only remarks ob- tainable from the non-coms were such ex- pressions as Boy, that food was good! As graduation drew near, everybody was sorry to leave even though he had done a great deal of griping throughout the year. The men of can look back to a fine year, and we can hope and know that next year we will do even better and regain the Intramural Shield and Color Company Honors. , 4' X HEADQ ARTER CO PA Iinllnlioul,'u1u1rlru1rl1'r Hxj. Spring faced us with softball and golf com- petition. Success was not our by-word, but the fun of playing more than made up for the deficit in wins. The softball season was fin- ished with an ll-I0 win over B in a close, well-fought game. YVe lost several men from the company teams to V. baseball, and Jim Guardino again represented us on the varsity -this time in track where he turned in his usual sterling performance. The several parties given during the year took their heavy toll of the slumping com- pany fund, but as all will agree. they were much more fun than a bulging bank account. This year the Father and Son Banquet was replaced by a dinner for parents here at school followed by an afternoon concert played for our parents, the battalion, and other guests. In our major field of school activity, the musical side of life, we were amazed to dis- cover that we had played for well over fifty practice and formal parades during the year. The swing band, while not so active as in former years, nevertheless provided dinner music at several evening meals throughout the year. A harmonious aggregation was formed with Ronnie Pearson, Stew Finkler, Jerry Fuller. Bob McNamara, and Nick Pialoglous . a. ,, M . W.. Most notable of all was our end-of-the-year picnic. Alter a hard-won triumph of the privates over the non-coms in softball. deli- cious steaks were devoured by a hungry group of bandsmen. Senior band medals were awarded to deserving members of the senior class by our retiring director, Mr. Lauver. As a unit, the band has improved tre- mendously throughout the past year. Under the guidance of our director, Mr. Lauver, we successfully found our way through a maze of notes, lines, and bars to the enjoyment of ourselves and our listeners. Several outside concerts near the end of the year were warmly greeted by those attending. YVC of Headquarters Company look back with what we believe is well-deserved pride in our accomplishments through the past yearg and now, with a large majority return- ing next year, we look forward to an even more successful organilation in l950. A tea given by the faculty on Friday after- noon gave the guests of the cadets an oppor- tunity to meet each other. Friday evening the Manlius basketball team demonstrated a high quality of play in a game against the Syracuse Freshmen. After the game, the Barnstormers furnished music for a square dance. Saturday morning was given over to a full winter sports program. The ski platoon staged a realistic attack with smoke screens and highly impressive maneuvers, after which the guests enjoyed informal skiing and skata ing. After lunch the faculty fielded a basket' ball team to meet the challenge of the cadet officers of the battalion in what may be loosely called a game in the Dodge Gym- nasium.
