It is our hope that. after you have gone on to the further stages of your career, while engaged in your life's work and in duties and pleasures of Widely varying natures, this book will recall the happy days you have spent at Manlius-the lessons learned. the recreation enjoyed, and the friendships made. 4 Q io1l1.a,'77'Lemo!z.q, yummy, Hdlzyan, The very pattern of a true gentlemang considerate, friendly, honorable. upright. faithful to every obligation, industrious and thorough beyond the call of dutyg devout, pure in mind, heart and soul. Clllylllllll. l'.Nl,SX'l'. THE MILITARY YEAR The military year began with the arrival of the first cadets on September 25. The Iirst activity was the immediate instruction of the new boys in fundamentals of drill. The major part ol' the military year was devoted to the preparatory training of the cadets for the two main events on the military calendar: Govern- ment lnspection and Company Competition, Along with the drill, which was not the great' est part of the training, were the important classes in military science. These classes were held three days a week until Govermnent Inspection. Classes in military science were held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, Tues- day and Thursday were used for physical training. There was extensive drill during the fall and spring whenever weather would permit it. The drill periods in the fall were held in the evenings alter mess, and they were no more popular then than they were in the spring when they were held before morning mess. Lt. Col. Givan, Battalion Conlmanderg Major Holleran, Executive Ollitfer: Lt. 'l':n'ler, Supply Ollicerz l.l. Black. Adjutant. ll A GOVERNMENT INSPECTION The Sunday parades began soon alter the school year opened in the fall and lasted until the weather made them impraeticable. How- ever, they started again in the spring as soon as the weather lmeczune favorztlile. Saturday mornings were devoted to room inspection and drill. When snow covered the ground so that we could not drill, we went 'for hikes in tl1e surrounding countryside. Again, weather permitting. Saturday mornings were devoted to practice parades, reviews, and rille inspect- ions. Alter Government Inspection the drill progrznn settled down to one llonr two nights an week. Government Inspection wus the highlight ol' the military year. as it always is: :md every- 'l'Iie tiovernmenl Inspectors reporting CI Company during Company Competition Captain Spanos receives Color Company 'l'ropliy GDMPANY GUMPETITIDN thing of a military nature led up to itz. This year the inspection was held early, coming on the twenty-fourth and twenty-hfth olf April instead of at the end of May. In the interim between spring vacation and Government Inspection the preparations were intensihed. Vie are very glad to say that they bore fruit and that the inspection was a success. There was extra reason for striving Ifor a high rating this year besides the fact we wished to con- tinue our highly enviable honor school record. This reason took the form of an answer to a challenge proffered by New York Military Academy. That school was presented with General MacNair's saber, and they ollered to use it as a trophy to be passed between Manlius and themselves, the holder of the saber to be that school which received the L lfl highest grade on the Government Inspection. This direct challenge did not go unansweredg the cadets really tried to win that saber. The results will not be known until the latter part of june, but considering the line performance ol' the cadets, news that we have won it will come as no surprise. The winter term brought about a change in a system that is very near to us: the disci- plinary system. The old system, that of the accumulation of merits and demerits, was discardedg and one that seems better came into being. The main theory olf the new system is that each delinquency is to be re- viewed on the day on which it is turned in, and action is to be taken on that day. This seems better than the old system under which reports were reviewed only once a week. COMPANY COMPETITION .Xnother provision ol' the new system is that no cadet above the rank ol' sergeant will serve time marching. but will be confined to his room at all times except lor mess and classes. Those so conlinetl lose all their privileges ol rank and command. The new system has worked smoothly and has redttced the number olf delinquencies owing to t.he lact. that for every delinquency report one receives, one has tio take the punishment rather than have it counterbalanced by the accumulation of merits. Ranking next to Government Inspection in the importance ol' military events is the annual Company Competition. This competition is among A, B, and C companies and is one of - I I I 2 the major roots of rivalry among them. The purpose of the competition is to determine that company which will have the privilege of being custodian of the colors for the next year. To be thus designated is a great honor, and it also carries such advantages as going into the mess hall lirst. The competition is based on the degree of perfection attained by each company in plain and fancy drill. The judges are in no way connected with the school, and the demonstration olf drill is ex- ceptional. This year the competition was as spirited as ever with all companies giving excellent performances. Only the decision ol the judges could determine the outcome, but amid such tumult and excitement the honor , mf 45 was 2lW2il'llCLl this year lo Company CI. system worked smootllly and well. Under the elfective coaching ol' XfVilliam Graf, newly appointed athletic director, and assistant coach Thomas Cahill, the team was lfound to possess the strength ol' former teams but to be lighting stronger competition. This year found Manlius with many husky new-corners to replace players lost by graduation. Among these were Doe, Blanchard, James Guardino, Paul Laper, and Frank Cousineau. Blanchard, a 210 pound' fullback, played a smashing game throughout the season. Another asset to the team was powerful Jim Guardino, a 205 pound Junior from YVatertown, N. Y. -lim, at left tackle, gained the adniiration of every fan and player through his ability to stop plays that came his way. Another tackle, Jim Laper, proved his ability in defensive action, stopping many plays. At left end was a great team player, Frank Cousineau, who gave an outstanding performance on the defense and offense. Tom Brogan is another player who deserves admiration and credit for his dependable work. As hrst center, Tom assisted in other positions when injuries threatened the success of the team. Bob Murphy did an admirable job as team captain and as right guard. Another player whose work was outstanding is Al Nicholas, an able passer, tackler, and a speedy ground-gaining runner. Other backfield men who deserve praise for their suport are: George Pike, Ted Bowie, Frank Scarduzio, Turk Milliman, Jerry Zell, Don Hess, Don Knoche, Dennis McCarthy. and Ralph Petta. Renaldo Mossotti, .lim Pelcher, .lack Mustermann, and Dave Van Vleet saw action in many games as ends. At tackle were Ted Gruman, Pete Blinco, Tom Martin, and Craig Tarler. Guards and centers were Paul Carlton, Ernie Spanos, Pete Stevens, Mike Stagliano, Bill Harder, Dave Graf, Rodney Demo, Paul Sampson, and Jack Van Cott. Although not so successful as in other years, the team deserves much credit for their hard play and fighting spirit throughout a difficult schedule. 314 ,, wir x ,, ' -Q f I . l i Assistant Coach Cahill and Coach Graf Nlanlius Manlius Manlius Manlius Manlins Manlius Manlius Manlius Manlius SCI-lliDUl.l-I 25 .. 32.. Syracuse lireslnnen VVhen coach Cahill announced basketball practice, a large group tried out for the team. After several weeks of hard practice, thirteen men were chosen to form the Varsity squad. Among this number were veterans -james Culver, Don Hess, and Tom Brogan. Our schedule this year was restricted to college freshman and other preparatory school teams with the result that we played a number of experienced teams. Among them were teams from Syracuse, Hartwick, Cortland, Cornell, and R. P. I. After several games, the regular lineup be- catne Jim Laper, Tom Brogan, Dan Blanch- ard, Jim Culver, and .lim Pelcher. With the assistance of Frank Cousineau, Renaldo Mossotti, jerry Zell, 'l'homas Brothers, Albert Nicholas, 'lack lvlustermann, and Dave Graf, the team finished the season with seven victor- ies and ten defeats. The team never lost its spirit even when defeat was inevitable, and Lit deserves credit for hard, fast play throughout the season. The team was ably managed by joe Dziminski and Dick Clutrchville. BASEBALL TEAM The Manlius Baseball team was troubled by rain from the starting gun to the end of the season. Nevertheless, Coach Cahill's boys worked hard, when weather permitted, and were rewarded by a live-four record. The mound duo ol' Purcell to WVallace plus the big bats ol' Cousineau, Milliman, and Pelcher helped make the season a great success. Central New York's Big Three, Colgate, Syracuse, and Cornell, were among the de- feated. Shortstop .jerry Zell and second base- man Alack Van Colt displayed great form which resulted in more than one double play. CUMPANY A AU Company had a very successful year which began in September with the install- ation of officers headed by Captain Herr. From this time on, there was no stopping A in its drive to become the best company on Post. In this exhibition drill, the company did an exceptional job and received much praise from the judges who watched us perform. Even though A had. been molded into a hne unit, we did not only drill this year. In December, the first company party was held in Knox Hall at which time appropriate gifts were distributed to the members ol' the com- pany. Also at this party the talented members of A were kind enough to entertain us with their accomplishments. ln the spring, soon after the grill opened, held a second party which was enjoyed by all. On May 8, A Company held their father and son ban- quet at Sch.raft's in Syracuse. At this time we heard speeches by General Barker, Dean Dillingham, Lt. Colonel Clayman, Mr. I-ferr, father of our company captain, Mr. Philip Schuyler '24--'27, President of Manlius Old Boys, and others. VVe also saw the movies of the school year which Lt. Hanson had taken. The final party was held during the last week of school when presents were given to the cadet officers and others. This year we have not been too successful in intramural sports. YN-le took second place in A League football and first in B League after winning many close games. In basketball we completed the season in fourth place in A League and first in B League. Our rifle team took second place, close behind the leaders. In the spring, A took second place in soft- ball, hrst in tennis and tied for first in golf. During the year we had many members of our teams-chosen for the All-Company teams. This year A had a very good scholastic average. YVC led the battalion most of the year and were able to have many men with honor grade every marking period. Under the leadership of Captain Shaw, our Commandant. we had a happy and successful yearg we wish him and the company many more such years in the future. gf. - J' , ' 15 1-,r A . Yfvrns COMPANY B Athletically, B Company had a fairly successful year, coming in third in the race for the traditional intramural shield. Al- though we finished in a second place tie in A League football, four of our men placed on the All-Company Squad: X'Valsh, Perialas. Ault, and Culver. Vile also enjoyed the dis- tinction of being tl1e only company to hold the powerful C Company team scoreless. ln both basketball and football, our gallant B League squads, led by Joe Seralini and Bull Moose Mc.-Xlfee respectively, failed to linish on top, but displayed a hghting spirit which was a credit to Hadley Hall. Softball was our least successful sport. li Company lost nine games which cost us our chance for intramural honors. Our academic record was better than the one we made in athletics. X-'Ve were consist, ently near the top all year, with an average which gave evidence of the earnestness with which the cadets of B Company applied them' selves to their daily studies. Socially our year was in all ways a great success. Our Christmas party was held in the King Club, and featured the telling of an effective Christnias story which Mr. jay and Captain Edwards collaborated to provide. The highlights of the social season was the lirst father and son banquet for B Company. The banquet was held on the roof garden of the Hotel Onondaga, in Syracuse, on May 15. The presence of a majority of the fathers of B Company cadets made the occasion the most memorable of all our social activities. Y'Ve enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner, speeches by General Barker, Dean Dillingham, Cap- tain lidwards, and our new Corinnandant-to- be, Captain Cahill. We were also pleased by a surprise speech by Lee Rothschield who did a magnificent job of voicing our feelings about the occasion, the company, and the school. ,Following that, we enjoyed the moving picture record of a year at Manlins, made by Lieutenant Hanson over the course of this year. This banquet will long be a happy memory of our days in Hadley Hall. Perhaps the greatest single influence upon the success ol' our year has been the leader- ship of our respected Ctlllllllllllfllllll, Captain Edwards. His readiness to lend encourage- ment, to give us help, advice, and guidance has been the basis of our admiration and respect for him, and of our sorrow that he linds it necessary to relinquish the post he has so ably lilled for two years. XfVe look forward to our association with our new Connnandant, Captain Cahill, and those of tts who are graduating wish all success to him and the boys of Hadley Hall in the years to come. The A League football team swept through its season with a remarkable record: five wins, no losses, and one tie. The only tie came on an extremely muddy day when C and B fought to a stand-stillg the ball rarely traveled inside either team's twenty-yard line. Under the direction of coach Biddy Wallace, the team was composed of such stars as: Sam Restivo, Tiny lihrhardt, john Cady, and Al Heree in the backfield. Tommy McLean, Earl Smith, Bill Shattuck, and jim Macliay made up our impenetrable line. Our B League did not fare quite so welll but, after losing its first two games it gave the league leaders a good scare each time they met. As the term moved on. many activities occupied the men of' HC . Two big company parties were held: one before Thanksgiving recess and the other at Christmas. A Non- Coms' Club was formed, the officers elected were: President Ernie Bockli, Vice-Presldent Tom Brogan, and Secretary-Treasurer Paul Carlton. Several outings were planned, the first of which was a trip to Highland Falls Park in the early spring. A softball game, hikes through the woods, and a Grab-bagl' supper were the f'eatured events. XfVinter brought basketball, swimming, ski- ing. and the C. Qfs headache, ping pong. The basketball teams, coached by Captain Sedg- wick, started practice early in january. From a standpoint of games won and lost, the A League season was not too successful. although our team was the only combination capable of beating the league champions. The ping-pong table in the smoking room was in constant use during the winter months. joe Dziminski won the Company champion- ship and then went on to take second place in the Battalion cliampionship matches. To complete a high-point sweep ol' winter sports. C had an undefeated intramural swimming team for the second successive year. After receiving much connnendation for its participation in the annttal Government Inspection, C turned to winning the Intra- mural Shield. WX-fe fielded the finest softball team in the Battalion. winning all but the last game ol' the season. The Restivo-Spanos battery was supported aheld by John Reagan, Newt Nelson. Bob Xftfait, Shorty Campbell, Tom McLean, and Joe Dziminski. As graduation drew nigh, the men of C could look back with pride on a year of ac- complishment. One where they had bested the Hill companies singularly and as a unit in all ranges of endeavor from football, to snow- ball fights. Under the leadership of its Hne officers and Company Commandant, Captain Sedgwick, C's men had won the trophy certifying their athletic prowess and the Com- pany Competition to become the Color Company once again. HEADQUARTERS GUMPANY This year, Headquarters Company has lived up to its reputation as the smallest, Hght- inest company on Post. Despite its lack of man- power, it has managed to have good teams on the field for almost every event. Football and band rehearsal came at conflicting times for awhile, but althougth we had little prac- tice, we fought the season out. Our A League team, while not having too successful a record, produced several stars. Stubby Martens, our quarterback, was chosen for that position on the All-Company Team. In B League football, our team dis- tinguished itself by winning the league championship. In basketball, the A League team from upper Thompson Hall took second honors. jimmy Guardino, our star forward, was chosen Co-Captain of the All-Company Team. In B League we were handicapped by lack of material, but although we didn't win a game, we never quit. In spring sports, Headquarters again shone by winning a tie for the company golf champ- ionship and fielding an excellent softball team. Although at a disadvantage because of lack of manpower, Headquarters Company has run well in the race for the intrainural shield. We are a group within a group. Drawing from our better performers, we formed our swing band which played for a number of dances during the school year. The members were: Dave Rudolph, Ted Gruman, Stew Finkler, George Fryer, Pete Pratt, Dick Morris, Don Miller, Ernie Zwick, Jim Guardino, Bill Kean, Dave Egan, Vance Elliott, Cliff Town- send, Wliit Fischer, Mouse lfVesl:on, and Don Mfatson. From the swing band are drawn the mem- bers of the Combo , whose hot jazz is often heard bursting forth from Knox Hall on otherwise quiet Sunday afternoons. The members of this enthusiastic organization are: Pete Pratt, lirnie Zwirk, Vanfe Elliott, and Doug Weston. Through the years, tl1e Manlius School Band has been an organization olf which the school could be proud, and we have tried our best to make the band ol' this year no except- ion to that record. The schedule ol rehearsals and more rehearsals has been dillieult, but Mr. Lauver. with skill and patience, has de- veloped our ability so that we believe we have been a credit to the school. Everyone enjoyed a program which included a hockey game between the Varsity and the Fayetteville liagles, horseback riding, skating, skiing, and lounging in the new Grill. Saturday night brought 'round the llllllllll' event of the carnival: the Formal Hop. Dick Rowell and his orchestra furnished the music for a IHOSK enjoyable dance. High- light of the evening was the crowning ol' the carnival queen: charming Nancy Zuber. Sunday's program included Chapel in the morning, a tea dance in the afternoon, and the inevitable sad farewells which brought a most successful carnival to an em.. W'ith Ed Herr, Jimmy Guardino, Biddy Wallace, Bob Yfllait, Bud Pur- cell, Tom Brogan, Frank Cousineau, and Ernie Spanos constituting the material with which to work, Inter- locutor Bob Murphy and the Varsity Club presented Our Corn Is Greener , a minstrel show, for the lirst part of the Varsity Club Cabaret. Following their performance, one is tempted to agree with the title under which their endeav- ors were presented to the world. The newly formed Glee Club provided a musical note to the program. Joe Mazzola, '47, and his friend did specialty numbers for the second half of the program, and their work was hilariously received. In appreciation of his work in writing and producing the show, the Varsity Club presented Mr. Jay with a beautiful cigarette case and lighter. l I , ,,,,.-- .4,..4 SHUFFLEBOARD Through the generosity of Mr. Frank W. Bowie, father of Cadet Lieutenant Edward Bowie of Company B, the battalion has this year enjoyed the use ol' a new shufileboard. It was installed in the King Club, and it is a beauty, about twenty-six feet long, made of the finest woods with exceptional workman- ship. It has been a most popular diver- sion for the cadets and facility alike, and it has seen much use during every free hour available. BILLIARD ROOM As usual, this year the billiard room has been a favorite spot for the cue artists to asemble. Probably shuilleboard attracted some of these artists away from the tables, but there is always a fanatic group who can see no other indoor sport. Certainly the tables were in steady use all year, and although one could sometimes deplore the amount of skill shown by the experts , one could never find serious fault with the enthusiasm with which shots were figured and executed.
