Text from Pages 1 - 119 of the 1960 volume:

ALMA MATER Guarded by the old oak tree, Symbol of our goal; Steadfast as our pride in thee, Its strength will write our scroll. Fayetteville-Manlius, Truth shall be thy light. Pledge we now our loyalty To colors green and white. Raise we now our voice in song, To thee a tribute bring: Join the ever-growing throng, Let all who love thee sing. FOREWORD Fayetteville-Manlius High School has built a reputation of which everyone con- nected with the school can be proud. This has been done with tangible and intangible characteristics. Leadership represents the faculty, scholar- ship the homerooms, service the activities, and sportsmanship the athletics. I_Ml. TABLE OF CONTENTS ! ONE GOAL REACHED AND MANY BEYOND SPECIAL SENIOR COURSES Sue Helden and Phyllis Gaebel, two on-the-ball seniors at F-M, rose bright and early every morning last summer to take a reading course at LeMoyne College. The. girls read nine new books, increased their reading rate, and made their summer a profitable one. A special math calculus course was offered to area students of exceptional ability in mathematics. Rudy Lorentz, Jim Purdy, Dave Albig, and Doug Lyons represented F-M well this past year at LeMoyne. Ruth McGann and Nina Fedoroff qualified in a preliminary test and were able to take a course in Russian history at Syracuse University. The course was a highly comprehensive one and was offered only to excellent history students. F-M can be proud of- Nina and Ruth! Val Shepard, sharp at science, was selected to take an advanced chemistry course at Cornell University last summer which lasted for six weeks. Valerie lived right on the university campus, made many new friends, and gained new knowledge and experience. 44 Boy! They sure aren't making study halls like this anymorel Ye gods . . . morning? Are you sitting this one out? Warm hands, but cold feet, Pat?' It can't be that bad, girls? SENIOR HISTORY O ur class entered F-M confidently in September, 1956. U nity was the key word then, and always. We have been a closely-knit group and have shared our experiences together. R endering their leadership to the good of the class were the Freshman officers. M alcolm Potter was president; Jim McCabe, vice-president; Lorie Ladd, secretary; and Sue Helden, treasurer. E ver fortunate, we were the first frosh group to escape initiation in many a year. Phew! M ost of us worked hard in order to make our dance, the Snowflake Swirl, a huge success. 0 nward, always. We entered our Sophomore year and found many old friends gone and many new ones joining us. R e-elected into the executive spotlight were Jim McCabe, now president, and Lorie Ladd, secretary. Pete Demong, veep, and Don Bromfield, treasurer, completed the list of class officers. 1 n order to raise money, we sold cans and cans of Golden Butter Bits! E lected king and queen of our sophomore dance were Sharon Baines and Stanley Baxter. S urely we all remember the many football and basketball games, the interesting assemblies, and the mixers. L eading us as Juniors were Bob Montgomery, president; Roger Spofford, vice-presi- dent; Marilyn Lloyd, secretary; Don Brough, treasurer. I nitiating the year was a bake sale to raise needed money. E very member of the Junior Proip Committee gave freely of his time and effort. W e engaged the Parisians — a Southern Plantation theme was decided. The Prom was on its way! F! ere, let it be known that it was one of the best Proms F-M has ever witnessed. E lection of Student Council president was near. Out of four worthy candidates, Glennie Perkins was chosen to be top executive. R emember the wonderful campaign speeches, the exciting parade, and the friendly rivalry? I don't think we'll ever forget. E nding our Junior year, we found ourselves more and more interested in the com- mencement exercises of the seniors. T o guide us through our last year — the hardest but happiest — were our dedicated Senior Class officers. H eading the list was Pete Demong as president, Roger Spofford was vice-president, Norman Leary was keeper of the money, and Marilyn Lloyd was re-elected as secretary. E veryone came to know and like Carla Montalbini, our foreign student. She was our guest especially because she stayed with one of us. O ur fall and winter were filled with college applications, scholarship exams, and scholastic aptitude tests. College was the goal of many. A nd through all this there was homework! But we made good. K illing time, to us, meant working it to death. We could all have used an extra hour in the day. S enior Ball. This year it was our turn to plan it. T he theme was kept a secret, naturally. A II had a wonderful time. Some even stayed out all night! N o school function in our history meant so much to us as our graduation. It was a time of beginning, yes; but it was also a time of ending. One era in our lives has been completed. D awn of a new period is beginning for us all. Our ways will part; we will forget some of our friends and some of our marvelous faculty. But we will never really forget F-M. How could we? S umming up ouf past years, it can be said for us all that Our memories lie where the Oak stands. CLASS OF 1961 a BRANDON CRANDALL'S outstanding leadership, abil- ity and personality helped him serve the junior class as its president. Vice-President GIL RAKER readily offered his services to assist the class president whenever needed. 48 Mr. Wheeler performs a daily miracle by keeping his homeroom both informal and quiet. OUR SCHOOL ACCREDITED BY THE MIDDLE STATES ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGE AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS Above are pictured the members of the evalua- tion committee who spent three days at our school evaluating every aspect of our educational program from boiler room to English 12, from assemblies to Auto Mechanics, from Guidance to Student Council. No phase of the program was omitted. As indicated under the photograph, all seven- teen members of the committee are educators. Some are teachers, some are school principals. Others are guidance conselors and curriculum coordinators. They are from both private and public schools, large and small. For many months before the visitation, which took place November 29, 1959, to December 2, 1959, all of the staff of our school met many times for many hours in self-evaluation procedures. Find- ings and conclusions by the faculty were carefully tabulated, then checked by the members of the committee pictured above. Every teacher was visited in his or her classes many times in the three day evaluation period. Accreditation by The Middle States Association indicates that a school so accredited has high stand- ards and is doing a commendable job in secondary education. On occasion, colleges considering our students for admission wish to know whether or not we are accredited. 102 Principal O O o P P O p 0 M p P in h-i H O' CD 3 O O 0 o CD 2 H M o H- 0 p O P M 0 Pi o O 03 3 2: O P a Ct p P h O' H 0 03 0 ct Pi in 03 ct H w o H O 0 ct 0 o' o P P 0 • • o P o Ct o 0 0 H M o 1 O o P 0 o p o C j 1 p o ct ct 0 O' p 3 0) o' 0 Pi 0 0 • 5 0 0 H OT Pi pi P ct H W 0) o 0 O' ct • p o 3 Ct 0 0 Qj o O H 0 ct tr1 03 J O P H 0 • 0 0 P O s: P a P P H P o' H 0 03 ct 0 0 O H p 0 P W 0 a 0 C 0 o 0 C J 0 0 Pi ct ct H • p H 4 pi P 0 0t) Pi 3 n: M in Q W 3 O -3 M O W o ro W w w ttf co 3 o PATRONS BUSINESS McIntyre Brothers Paper Co.
