The culmination of many days preparation was on a warm, windy fall day, and it made it all worthwhile. The anticipation of the big game and dance prodded many of us toward the first big event of the school year. The Student Council made the plans, and everybody had a part--cheerleaders decorating the football field, classes making floats, townspeople and organizations making floats, grade school children decorating bicycles, parents sacrificing, teachers and administration put into a turmoil, and it was worth it. School was dismissed at noon and last minute parade details were taken care of. At 1:30 the parade went through town and back. There were many entrees and many onlookers. Our football season that evening was not marred as we defeated Walnut, our arch-rival, by 32-22. After the game, we danced to The Pepperidge and at 10:30 saw Dennis Hartz and Sherri Oloff-90n crowned King and Queen. Homecoming is probably the social highlight of our school year, and with everyone putting a great deal of effort into it, it was a resounding success. 14 Lock, Stock Dire Mary Cast Mr. Warren - John Schmidt Miss Entwhistle - Wanda Larsen Jane Gardner - Cindy Olson Miss Prather - Joyce Hadley Mr. Plunkett - Dennis DeDecker Mrs. Maggs - Lauri Hewitt Carol Izzard - Debbie Roush Mrs. Donnelly - Barbie Gaunt Don Donelly - DuWayne Polte Larry Donnelly - Steve Heward Mary Lou - Ann Sale Students - Lori Swanson Karla Kelm ; and Lipstick! scted by Donnell The Drama Club presented another fine production, Lock, Stock, and Lipstick, on November 16 and 17, 1972. Cordon Warren, the student counselor in Pembroke High, returns to the fall semester of school only to find that the Board of Education has decided to add a woman counselor to their staff. Jane Gardner, the new counselor, breezes in and Gordon takes an immediate dislike to her. Jane, with no roof over her pretty head, moves into Gordon's precious domain--in comes Jane, Lock, Stock and Lipstick. Mrs. Maggs, a new cleaning woman, tucks everything in place and Mr. Plunkett, head custodian, insists on being given his proper title, that of Supervising Sanitary Engineer. Mrs. Donley, and her family, new in town believes her children can do no wrong. Her son, Don, is a born leader but Larry is only a shade above the level of a delinquent. Miss Entwhistle, the school principal, resigns at the end, while Miss Prather gets involved in more than she can cope with. A delightful comedy that brought much enjoyment to its viewers. Sweetheart Prom The date was February 24, 1973, the place was Tiskil-wa High School. It was an exciting night for all the couples to get dressed up and go to the annual Sweetheart Prom. The dance started at 8:00 p. m. with the theme Sweet and Innocent and the Love Knots playing. At 10:15 the coronation started. Manlius was first with Alvy Peterson and Susan Morman-2nd runners-up, Robert Wallace and Sherri Oloffson-1st runners-up, and Dennis Hartz and Deanna Wiggim were King and Queen. They were crowned by the F. H. A. Chapter parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack W'iggim. The Queen received a dozen red roses and a crown, and the King received a sceptor. The court then danced with the other two schools, Western and Tiskliwa, after their coronations. Business Trip The date was April 26, 1973 when the business classes went on their annual Business Trip to Rock Island and Moline, Illinois and Davenport, Iowa. We left the school at 8:30 am by bus with 33 students. Along the way we saw the floods from the recent large rains. We arrived in Rock Island around 10:00 and toured Modem Woodmen of America, an Insurance company. We then journeyed to eat at Bishop's Buffet at 11:00. Following this we had time to shop and do what we wanted to do. Then at 1:15 we arrived at Desauliniers, a printing company in Moline, and toured there until 2:30. We headed homeward, somewhat exhausted and weary. The annual Spring Concert was held on May 10, 1973 in the high school gymnasium. The high school chorus and band along with the grade school choruses and band performed for a large audience. The Eighth Grade and High School Chorus sang- Traces, Little Green Apples, and My Way. The High School Chorus sang- I Don't Know How to Love Him; Sounds of Silence; and Scarborough Fair. A comical skit, My Gal's a Corker , was then performed by Joyce Hadley, Darlene Wiggim, Pam Roush, and Ron Kerchner. The High School Band then played-Classic Miniatures; Son of a Preacherman; Purlie; Brittany; The Typewriter with soloist Mr. Gene Burton; Pizzicato Polka; Take Five with Flutist-Joyce Hadley, Cornet-ist-Harold Sarber, Saxophonist-Susan Morman; and Tribute to Louis Armstrong with Trombone-Ron Kerchner, Cornet-Harold Sarber, Clarinet-Ann Sale, Tenor Sax-Joel Peterson, Tuba-Jim Sarber. The directors for the evening were Mrs. Lois Pendarvis and Mr. Gordon Connor. Our Town This Is the Way We Were in Our Growing Up and in Our Marrying and in Our Doctoring and in Our Living and in Our Dying. The Drama Club presented Our Town , a three act drama by Thronton Wilder on April 27 G 28, 1973. It centers around a small town called Grovers Comers, New Hampshire where the Gibbs and Webbs are neighbors. The play focuses on George Gibbs (Ron Kerchner) and Emily Webb (Denise Hartz) who are young friends, then teenagers, lovers, and finally man and wife. They barely say their vows till death do us part before Emily is taken in death and placed in the village cemetery on a rainy, dreary day. The cast was headed by the Stage Manager (DuWayne Polte). He told the audience facts about the town. When he needed assistance, he called the local advisor, Professor Williard (Criag Schis-ler). The town had a doctor and his family, Etoctor and Mrs. Gibbs (Randy Teske and Lori Swanson). They were the average parents of the prospective groom George and a daughter, Rebecca (Deb Roush). The local newspaper was published by Editor Charles Webb (John Schmidt) and his wife Myrtle (Pam Roush). Their starry eyed children were Wally (Nate Stoller) and Emily. The town's paper boy was Jo Crowell, Jr. (Steve Heward). Other supporting characters in the drama are Jo Stoddard (Jamie Kirkpatrick), Constable Warren (Jim Tunney), Simon Stimpson (Keith Carpenter), Mrs. Soames (Barb Gaunt), Howie Newsome (Mike Nelson), Si Crowell (Audie Rudiger), and Sam Craig (Kerry Jensen). The people of the town were: Sherri Oloff-son, Deb Creason, Theresa Miller, Bettie Hensel, and Carolyn Anderson. Emerald Hills Country Club May 18,1973 Junior-Senior Prom Cabaret was the theme of the 1973 Junior-Senior Prom held at the Emerald Hills Country Club in Sterling. The dance started at 9:30 featuring Pepperidge which lasted until 11:00. Coronation was at 10:00 with Junior attendants Pam Roush and Rick Childers. Senior Attendants were Judy Hansen and Terry Roush. King Tom Slock received a scepter and Queen Sherri Oloff-son received a dozen red roses and a crown. The banquet soon followed with Swiss Steak as the main course. Rick Childers welcomed everyone, Terri Flint gave the response, and Lori Hewitt gave the Benediction. Wills were read by Theresa Miller and the class prophecy was read by Judy Hansen. Bowling, billiards, and movies were then available for entertainment until 6:00 a. m. when doors were opened and the night became only a memory. 26 J Awards Day May 18,1973 LATIN AWARD-Joyce Hadley, Judy Hansen, Julie Bourquin OUTSTANDING SENIOR VOCALIST- Dennis DeDecker OUTSTANDING SENIOR BAND-Susan Morman OUTSTANDING SERVICE IN MUSIC- Craig Schisler ENGLISH AWARD-Ron Kerchner FRENCH AWARD-Teresa McMahon HISTORY AWARD-Denny Hartz OUTSTANDING G. Schladen Senior Class Trip The Seniors left Manlius about 3:30 on June 4 and arrived at the Washington Airport at 10:00 pm. We stayed at the Sheraton Motor Inn in Silver Springs, Maryland. We toured many places of interest in Washington. We thoroughly enjoyed the night tour of Washington which included the Washington Monument, but were glad to return to the motel that night. Wednesday the class toured the Smithsonian, Lincoln Memorial and that night we went to the dance at the Black Greco which we all thought was great. The next morning we went to New York by bus and spent the rest of the day shopping on Fifth Avenue. Friday we toured Chinatown, Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building and in tne evening we went to Radio City Music Hall. Saturday we toured Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts and rode back to Maryland to get on the plane which was homeward bound. We all enjoyed the trip to the utmost but were glad to get back on the old home grounds once again. In Memoriam Lowell Wheeler Vernon Martin Lowell Wheeler and Vernon Martin passed away during this school year after many yean of service as Head Custodian and Transportation Manager. They will be surely missed by their many friends and acquaintances in the Manlius School District. 35 We’re Number 1 Again! The season started much as any other season starts. Sweaty practices, tired football players and hard driving coaches. But there was a certain air about everything. Who would say we could possibly win the conference? But could anyone say we wouldn't? Wethersfield 22-6 The first game of the season came and went. The Devils were nervous but Wethersfield possibly could have been even edgier as their early fumbles set up Devil TD's. Manlius looked a little less than sharp but managed to put away their first victim of a long season. Elmwood 28-0 The Trojans proved to be easy target for the up and coming Red Devils. Scoring all their points in the first half and early 3rd quarter the Devils easily put Elmwood away and many underclassmen got their first opportunity to play. Wyoming 26-8 Most of the team had been waiting for this game for over a year. Revenge was in the hearts of many but Wyoming had other plans as they jumped to an early 8-0 lead. After that the Devils got down to business and began to make indents in Wyoming's end zone. When it was all over, the Devils had their sweet revenge. Dunlap 42-6 Things were bad for the Dunlap Eagles the night of October 6. To start out, a transformer blew before the game and one row of lights went out over their football field. Secondly, the Eagles were to play the Manlius Red Devils. The Devils were red hot after beating Wyoming and showed it by scoring 22 points in the 1st quarter and 14 in the 2nd. Manlius slowed down and only scored once in the 2nd half, but then there were bigger games to come. VARSITY FOOTBALL: FRONT L TO R: J. Kirkpatrick, S. Stenros, R. Hewitt, R. Faber, J. Andrews, D. The occasion was right and the stakes were high for the Manlius-Walnut game. To top things off, the date was Friday, October 13. The devils must have realized it meant bad luck for the Blue Raiders as they jumped out to an early lead at half. Walnut tried to come back late in the 3rd and 4th quarters but a stingy Devil defense held. When it was all over Manlius had its sweetest victory so far in the season, but it was marred by disputed TD's and by a broken collarbone on Senior end Tom Slock. Toulon 14-8 Toulon was to the first of the wet games. The ground was completely soaked and in it the Devil offense bogged down. Only mustering 14 points in the whole game, the Devils had to fight to turn back a surging Toulon team. Late minute interceptions and fumble recoveries saved the game for the Devils and their Undefeated season. J.V. CHEERLEADERS: Darlene Wiggim, Deb Rouch, Jane Behrens, Joyce Hadley, Ann Sale. Princeville 32-2 The ground was still soaked but the Devils offense and defense got off the ground. Scoring in every quarter, Big Red held the Princes to only 2 points. Now there were 7 down and only 2 games to go! Western 6-0 WTien a team nears the end of a perfect season, every game gets rough. Before Manlius could go undefeated they had to get by the Western Rams. Several times the Devil offense was inside the 10 yard line only to be turned back by a solid Ram line. The Devils finally came out on top with a narrow margin of victory and clinched at least a part of the crown Bradford 42-0 Suddenly, a long season comes to an abrupt end and seems very short. The mighty Manlius Red Devils went into their last game of the '72 season trying to to make it a perfect season. Bradford quickly learned why Manlius was 8-0. Scoring through both the airways and on the ground the Devil's offense rolled up an impressive score while the defense held the Panther's offense in check. When it was all over, the Red Devils of Manlius High School had an undefeated season, a Conference 'Crown', and memories of a great season. 37 38 39 Mark Hochstatter A Ivy Peterson Duane Blackert Senior Football Players Class of 1973 David Kelm Denny Hartz 40 Kenny Bolin All Conference FIRST TEAM OFFENSE Kenny Bolin Rodney Frank Dennis Hartz SECOND TEAM OFFENSE Joe DeBrock Tom Slock FIRST TEAM DEFENSE Duane Blackert Terry Roush Alvy Peterson Bob Hensel Rodney Frank Dennis Hartz HONORABLE MENTION Kenny Bolin Terry Roush Dennis DeDecker 41 FRONT ROW, L. It was a rather disappointing season for the team as everyone was hoping this would be the year that Manlius could go all the way and win the conference. Despite the bad games, the Devils did manage to play some exciting and good games. The most memorable of these was probably the Manlius-Wethersfield game on January 9, 1973 when the Devils downed the state-ranked Flying Geese. With all the bad games and the good ones, Manlius ended the season 11-14. The Frosh. -Soph, basketball team wasn't as bad as our record indicated. There were several games which could have gone either way, but we just couldn't put it all together. If the team would have played every game the way we played Tiskilwa and Malden we would have lost very few games. The season ended with a 2-19 record Frosh-Soph CHEERLEADERS: FRONT ROW, L. Band and Chorus This year the Manlius High School Band marched in the the Princeton Christmas and WIU Homecoming Parades and as usual led the Manlius Homecoming Parade. We sent Ann Sale and Sue Morman to the All-Star Band Festival in Macomb, and had a successful representative in Blackhawk Festival both in Mass and Honor Bands Bands. At contest we received two lsts and quite a few seconds, but the experiences gained and shared were much more important. We sent Sue Morman to summer band camp in Macomb. Mixed in with our musical activities we've had fun at our sledding and bowling parties. All in all, we've had a really fantastic year. FRONT ROW-L. On November 20 we went to Wyoming, 111. for the Blackhawk Conference Chorus Festival. On April 14, 1973 we participated in a contest at Rock Falls, 111. At the end of the year we sang at the Spring Concert on April 30, 1973. Majorettes The five majorettes marched with the band at every home football game and even worked up some routines. The day after our last football game we marched in the Western Illinois University Parade. And then we marched in the Santa Claus Parade in Princeton, on November 25th. We always performed and marched with the band until the last basketball game with Western, where we put on the half-time show. It has been a busy, but fun year for all of us. L. The most frequently entered courses by the boys are auto and ag mechanics. Manlius has 10 of 13 boys enrolled in these two courses. In these courses they study, tear apart, and put together engines. Beauty culture, business and health occupations are the courses frequently entered by girls. S of 6 girls from Manlius are entered in two of these courses. There are also two courses in which both boys and girls frequently enter and they are graphic and commercial arts. In these enable the students to test and bring out their artistic talents. It does have its downfalls such as getting up early every morning and the long bus ride. The ride does prove worthwhile sometimes when we are listening to the radio, daa--ro, and playing guess how many are in this bag. In the long run it is good experience for all. 65 1. After ten years the great class of 73 finally made it together again. ALVY PETERSON provides us with the perfect spot for our reunion didn't he? Just think of it, he now owns Bureau County and where else could we have a reunion but back on the old home ground. KENNY BOLIN provided all the refreshments, you know that his new company now goes by the name of BOLINS FARM didn't you? Did you see MARK HOCHSTATTER pull up in that bus? He told me that he now owns his own bus company which he calls LIPS BUS SERVICE. Getting off the bus were some of M.H.S. 's former athletes. DUANE BLACKERT after taking courses in coordination and speaking finally got the job as water boy for the Chicago Bulls. Behind him came the world famous center of the Bulls, TOM SLOCK. Mark said they had to go to Wisconsin to pick up JOE DEBROCK, who is now the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. And on his way down to Bureau County he stopped at Soxes park in Chicago to pick up fielder, DON JONES. Our class was always full of athletes wasn't it. You know I would have liked to talk with JUDY HANSEN but she is now a nurse in Japan. I hear she is teaching them Japanese, well at least that is what SUSAN MORMAN said when I asked her. Susan is now head of BETTY CROCKER and travels world-wide. She told me she enjoyed fixing dinner for the Americans in the Japanese Olympics this year. Did you know that DENNIS HARTZ, has already won eight gold medals running in the Olympics this year? Sue told me that Olympic weightlifter, DICK CRAINE didn't care too much for her cooking. He said that he'd rather go over to Quick's. I thought it was nice of JIM SARBER to provide a little music for us. He now plays the tuba in the Lawrence Welk Band. Do you remember the Kory workers back in high school? Well I just couldn't believe that TERRY ROUSH owns the whole company now. Did he tell you about the new fork the company is working on? Terry told me that DEANNA WIGGIM is head secretary of the company under Manager Wilt. Remember Tunney? Now- you don't mess around with JIM TUNNEY, he's a full-fledged state policeman. I saw Jim talking shop with the head of the CIA, DENNIS DEDECKER, remember the brains that guy had. He was always number one in the class. Did you talk with ROBBIS WALLACE? Well now he owns Bureau County Grain and Supply and JON MILLER went into business with Viigil in the fertilizer business and sprays roofs in his spare time. Did you know that CAROLYN WIBBER made it big in daytime T. V. shows? She now hosts the Who, What and Where Game. GARY KNUDSEN is the only member of the class of 73 to go into the teaching profession. He is now a Biology Professor at Harvard. TOM ETHERIDGE made a mint of money when he inherited the Cover Girl Company. He's worth millions now. RODNEY FRANK is now selling his own chain of lawn mowers. He manufactured a chain of lawn mowers that hook up to the back of a bicycle. TERRY FLINT told me that she still enjoys racing. Remember those days? Well she still takes the Camaro up to Byron and races. She said that Gerald and Tara haven't missed a race yet. Terry always gets the car serviced at Hoffman's DX. TIM HOFFMAN bought the station from Catton years ago. It was too bad DEBBIE CREASON couldn't make it back for the reunion wasn't it? She wrote and told me that her schedule is so busy under the President that she couldn't possibly make it. I talked with JIM HURLEY about his new business too. The new product is Little Jims and he says that business is boomin'. It was sure nice to see DAVE KELM again. He made it big. It must be nice owning your own company. I thought the name was fitting though-Gearheads Incorpora ted-just seemed to fit Dave. You eam a nice bit as secretary for Gearheads don't you? Is any of that shorthand necessary for the job? Well I'd better close and get back to my nursing duties on the seventh floor. Homecoming attendants were Ron Nelson and Patti Pierson. The highlight of our year was the International Supper which was held on December 14. It consisted of Italian, Mexican and English foods. Of course, we can't forget the Junior Coat Check which added bit by bit to the financial standings of the class. The 1973 Prom was held at Emerald Hills on May 18, 1973.
