At the close of the 1969 Football season everyone felt that there would never be another team as good as the one that had just taken the Conference Championship--everyone except a group of about 25 individuals who felt that the 1969 team was just a training grounds. This group was the 1970 team, the ones that were to take the second consecutive Conference Championship. As they reported for practice in late August of 1970, they had but one thing in mind and that was the Championship. After a month of hard practice came the chance they had been waiting for, the first game of the year. The last game of the 1969 season (Elmwood) had been a very close one with Manlius winning on a last second touchdown pass. In the first game the mighty Red Devils ran over Elmwood. Next came the journey to Wyoming and another win. The third game of the season pitted Manlius' mighty offense against Dunlap's supposedly strong defense. The offense was again. Coming into the fourth game, Manlius and Walnut were both without a loss. Walnut's winning streak was ended. Toulon made the trip to Manlius for the fifth game and the mighty Red Devils won their Homecoming Game. The sixth game was the most important game of the year. That game pitted the only two remaining undefeated teams in the Conference, Manlius and Princeville against one another for a showdown. The weather that day was not very conducive to playing football. There was talk of postponing the game because of the rain, but by game time the weather had cleared enough to permit the game to be played. There were only two plays that the Red Devils were able to turn into scores all night. A 40 yard romp by senior halfback, Butch Harp, put 6 on the scoreboard and the extra point play, a pass to senior end, Art Dale, made it 8. The final score was Manlius--8, and Princeville—6. Going into their game with Manlius, Western was winless, and after the game, they still were. The eighth game was against Bradford. The mighty Red Devils came through with another win. The last game of the year, like so many of the others was a mud-bath. TTie Flying Geese of Wethersfield were waterlogged by the rain and ended up on the short end of the scoreboard. In the locker room after the game was over the Red Devils celebrated for almost 3 4 of an hour. When the buses turned off Interstate 80 and onto 88 they were met by the village Fire Department and almost two dozen cars and were escorted to the High School. After leaving the school they were again escorted to Betty's Diner where they were the guests of honor at a chicken dinner which was given to them by the townspeople. At the All-Conference Banquet the Red Devils placed heavily on the first string offense and defense lineups. First Team Offense Ron Teske--Tackle, Gail Edlefson--Guard, Mick Sanden--Center, Butch Harp--Halfback, Bud Hansen--Fullback. First Team Defense Merlon Schuneman--End, Gail Edlefson--Tackle, Mick Sanden--Guard, Dean Blackert— Safety. Second Team Defense Bud Hansen--End, Ron Teske—Tackle, and Butch Harp--Halfback. Honorable Mention--A1 Plumley--Quarter back.
