At the close of the 1969 Football season everyone felt that there would never be another team as good as the one that had just taken the Conference Championship--everyone except a group of about 25 individuals who felt that the 1969 team was just a training grounds. This group was the 1970 team, the ones that were to take the second consecutive Conference Championship. As they reported for practice in late August of 1970, they had but one thing in mind and that was the Championship. After a month of hard practice came the chance they had been waiting for, the first game of the year. The last game of the 1969 season (Elmwood) had been a very close one with Manlius winning on a last second touchdown pass. In the first game the mighty Red Devils ran over Elmwood. Next came the journey to Wyoming and another win. The third game of the season pitted Manlius' mighty offense against Dunlap's supposedly strong defense. The offense was again. Coming into the fourth game, Manlius and Walnut were both without a loss. Walnut's winning streak was ended. Toulon made the trip to Manlius for the fifth game and the mighty Red Devils won their Homecoming Game. The sixth game was the most important game of the year. That game pitted the only two remaining undefeated teams in the Conference, Manlius and Princeville against one another for a showdown. The weather that day was not very conducive to playing football. There was talk of postponing the game because of the rain, but by game time the weather had cleared enough to permit the game to be played. There were only two plays that the Red Devils were able to turn into scores all night. A 40 yard romp by senior halfback, Butch Harp, put 6 on the scoreboard and the extra point play, a pass to senior end, Art Dale, made it 8. The final score was Manlius--8, and Princeville—6. Going into their game with Manlius, Western was winless, and after the game, they still were. The eighth game was against Bradford. The mighty Red Devils came through with another win. The last game of the year, like so many of the others was a mud-bath. TTie Flying Geese of Wethersfield were waterlogged by the rain and ended up on the short end of the scoreboard. In the locker room after the game was over the Red Devils celebrated for almost 3 4 of an hour. When the buses turned off Interstate 80 and onto 88 they were met by the village Fire Department and almost two dozen cars and were escorted to the High School. After leaving the school they were again escorted to Betty's Diner where they were the guests of honor at a chicken dinner which was given to them by the townspeople. At the All-Conference Banquet the Red Devils placed heavily on the first string offense and defense lineups. Manlius Wins All-Sports Trophy PRESENTS ALL-SPORTS TROPHY--Sports Editor Bob Westlund presents the newspaper's Traveling All-Sports Trophy to the Manlius High School coaching staff of Joe Ricci, Ken Bourquin, and Grant Andresen. The Manlius Red Devils, undefeated football champions, fourth-place finishers in both basketball and baseball, and third place takers in track, claimed the coveted ALL-SPORTS trophy by accumulating 32 of a possible 40 points from the four conference sports races. The Red Devils squeezed past the Toulon Trojans, conference champs in both baseball and track, by a point and a half (32--30 1 2) for the ALL-SPORTS Title. Manlius, the smallest Blackhawk member with an enrollment of 120 students in four classes, posted its second straight undefeated football championship season under Coach Ken Bourquin last fall to get its ALLSPORTS surge started. Coach Grant Andresen coached the Red Devil cagers to a fourth place in the basketball race and he was also the coach for the fourth place finish team which finished 4--3 in the circuit. Bourquin's thinclads finished third to Toulon and Wethersfield in the annual Blackhawk track and field meet. 1970-71 Blackhawk Conference All-Sports Race SCHOOL FB BB TR BB TP Manlius 10 7 8 7. 32 Toulon 7 10 10 3 1 2 30 1 2 Elmwood 6 8 6 9 1 2 29 1 2 Dunlap 8 9 2 8 27 Walnut 4 S 1 2 4 9 1 2 23 Princeville 9 5 1 2 3 3 1 2 21 Bradford 4 3 1 2 5 5 17 1 2 Wethersfield 4 3 1 2 9 0 16 1 2 Wyoming 2 1 1 2 1 6 10 1 2 Western 1 1 1 2 7 0 9 1 2 24 Homecoming Parade October 16,1970 The homecoming festivities got underway Thursday night, October 15, with a skit by the cheerleaders. The snake dance followed, and the climax of the night was the announcing of the king and queen. It was a sunny day for the parade. Many class members were hustling about attending to last minute details on their floats. Judges downtown observed the floats as they passed and placed the Seniors' float Laying for a Victory first. Second place was taken by the Juniors with Well Armed for a Victory, and the Freshmen placed third with We'll Lick 'em. 26 (Left to right) Julie Jacobson, Nathan Stoller, Freshmen; Janice Kirkpatrick, Bob Latstetter, Juniors; Queen Linda and King Butch; Debbie Raabe, Dean Blackert, Seniors; Deanna Wiggim, Dennis Hartz, Sophomores. We arrived in New York after a smooth ride on Modem Airlines and a crummy breakfast. We toured Lincoln Center for the performing arts, and saw a stage show Promises, Promises. We had nice rooms with color T.V.'s. The second day was Memorial day. We toured Chinatown, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Build-ing--all in the rain. That night we went to Radio City Music Hall, which was fabulous. Monday we left New York and went to Gettysburg. We were only three hours late due to a flat tire. We finally reached Washington and checked into our hotel in Silver Springs. That night we toured Washington and climbed the Washington monument. Tuesday we went to the Capitol, Bureau of Engraving, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and J. F. Kennedy's grave. That night we went to a stage show, had a pizza party, and a water balloon fight. The switchboards were pretty busy that night. Wednesday we toured some more. Our flight home was pretty rough, but no one seemed to care. We reached home around 10:00, tired, sore, and sober. 41 Awards Night CLASS SERVICE AWARDS: Freshman: Sheila Donahue Sophomore: Dennis Hartz Junior: Terry Mullin J J I Latin Award: Mary Stovall IHSA State Music Award--Junior Girls Chorus Outstanding Musician Award--Debbi Christensen History Award--Merlon Schuneman DeKalb Agricultural Award--Rick Oloffson Outstanding Agricultural Award--Bud Hansen, Roger Bolin Math Award--Larry DeBrock Science Award--Allen Plumley Mathematical Association Test Award—Allen Plumley Honorable Mention: Larry DeBrock and Cindy Dale Home Ec Award--Vicki Heward Betty Crocker Award--Debbi Christensen Outstanding Typing Award--Merlon Schuneman Outstanding Shorthand Award--Vicki Heward Quill G Scroll Initiates--Deanna Wiggim, Theresa Miller Quill G Scroll Special Awards--Butch Harp, member Joni Hartz, Mary King, Donna Hudson Editors Award--Karen Chesser, (newspaper) Terry Mullin Mary King (annual) Honors Award--Karen Chesser, Terry Mullin Commercial Award--Karen Chesser, Donna Hudson BOTTOM--Mr. Burton, Advisor; K. Senior Class Will I, Dean Blackert, will to Curt Miller my ability to fix the mechanical problems of any automobile (temporarily, anyway), and my keen sense of humor. I, John Bohm, will to Orv Teske my reserve seats at basketball games and my little black book. 1, Karen Chesser, will to Mary King and Teresa Stoller my ability to remain calm, cool, and collective under the scrutiny of a certain teacher. I, Debbi Christensen, will to Joni Ham my authority in the grade school P.E. class, the ability to play first chair comet next year, and the talent for seeing people for what they really are. I, Art Dale, will to Janice Kirkpatrick my great ability to stay in school, my knack of dropping pencils, and my good control of a car on ice. I, Larry DeBrock, will to Dave Sunquist my car in place of his old truck and my old pair of tennis shoes. I, LaVem DeSkeere, will to Curtis Miller my ability for squealing tires and not getting caught. I, Bud Hansen, will to Orv Teske a new map for his Saturday night endeavors. I, Butch Harp, will to Don Hartz my su- Dear Merlon, Last week I was consulting a Certified Public Accountant about your bank. Come to think of it, he was Randy Musselman. You remember Randy, don't you? Anyway, he told me that you were backing a Comedy Movie starring Larry DeBrock. That sounds a little corny. Hey, speaking of com, how's Mick Sanden doing in the Crain Business? I heard that you lend money to young married couples. That reminds me, how's Dean Blackert and Debbie Raabe getting along ? b she still his secretary at the farm co-op? You know she and Donna Hudson were always good typists in school. Did Donna ever get that job as librarian in the Library of Congress? Speaking of libraries, I read a book the other day by Debbie Christiansen. I wonder if it was about Pat Hurley. The name of it was The Irish Farmer , or The Man with the Green Thumb . While I'm talking about farming, maybe you could contact John about buying some farmland for me. I hear that he owns most of Bureau County. Is it true that Rusty Rank is his foreman? As long as I'm talking about ranks, did Allen Plumley ever make it to General? You know he graduated from West Point with honors. Hey, did you know that someone else perior speed and 17 pairs of socks 1 bought for football this year. I, Tom Hoffman, will to Roger Larsen my charm, poise, intelligence, humility, and other redeeming characteristics and talents that 1 possess. I, Donna Hudson, will to Veronica Opsal and Nancy Schoenberger my bottle of For Redheads Only. I, Pat Hurley, will to Bob Latstetter my ability to do almost anything and not get caught. I, Linda Monson, will to Nancy Morse the ability to accept Princeton for what it is. I, Cathy Morse, will to Vicki Heward and Joy Neahring my place in Bookkeeping. (You can tenderly fight over it.) I, Randy Musselman, will to Mary Stovall my accounting ability. I, Rick Oloffson, will to Dave Jensen my ability to drive through fences and fall off cars without bodily injury. I, Kathy Pierson, will to Nancy Morse a fence post between the Pierson and Bolin farms. I, Allen Plumley, will to Terry Mullin my slide rule for beating eggs while doing his math. Senior Class Prophecy out of our class deals in honor now? Yeah, Patsy Webber became the first woman on the Supreme Court. While I'm speaking of justice, the other day I got a ticket from a lady policewoman. The trouble was that she was riding in the car with me. It was Linda Wolford! Another girl by the name of Linda is doing all right, too. Linda Monson is the new Mayor of Walnut. I was wondering whether or not your bank financed the Manlius Hospital. Did Karen Chesser ever become a nurse ? 1 thought that she always fainted at the smell of alcohol. While I'm on the subject of alcohol, I wonder if you have heard how Joe Slock and Craig Wise are doing in the brewery business ? As long as I'm talking about the Brewers, did you know that Art Dale pitches for the professional baseball team, the Milwaukee Brewers ? I know that you have heard of the Morse Code. Cathy Morse is the leader of a woman's liberation group, and their code is Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jump over to Mr. Quick's . The other day I heard that LaVeme DeSkeere bought out Standard Oil Company and renamed it Skeeter Gas Corporation. Pat Thompson took over the service station in Manlius for him, I think. Didn't I, Debbie Raabe, will to Cheryl Sandrock the decision to go out for cheering no matter what. I, Rusty Rank, will to Bob Latttatter my '64 chevy. I, Mick Sanden, will to Mike Lindelof my great driving record. I, Merlon Schuneman, will to Gail Edlef-son I'll be more aggressive next time, button. I, Joe Slock, will to Dave Sunquist my executive position in the Fender association and my straight hair. I, Pat Thompson, will to Roger Bolin my ability to be good. I, Shirley Thorpe, will to Rita Landseidel my ability to play crab soccer. I, Patsy Webber, will to Janice Kirkpatrick my Emily Post book of etiquette. I, Virginia Webber, will to Kathy Swanson my ability to sldp school and not get caught. I, Craig Wise, will to Gail Edlefson my parking place on Main Street. 1, Linda Wolford, will to Cindy Dale my book entitled, Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask. he run for the school board last year? Did Shirley Thorp really become the president of the school board? I always thought she was going places. That brings Rick Oloffson to mind. He became a public orator and travels all over the world. The other day he gave a speech at Virginia Webber's School of Choreography and Singing. She made it big. As long as I'm mentioning big things, how's Bud Hansen doing. Is hw teaching ag, or did he go on to play pro football? Going from one extreme to another, did Kathy Pierson ever grow any taller? The last time I heard about her she was trying to develop a desk for short secretaries. You know, being short isn't that bad. Napolean did all right. Hey, is Tom Hoffman still walking around with his hand in his coat? He always thought he was Napolean's reincarnation. Listen, I've got to go. I've got an appointment to paint a portrait of the President. I'll talk to you later about depositing some money. You know I think I did a good job on your picture. I really think you look better on the dollar bill than Washington did anyway. Well, till next time.
