Reading ’Riting ’Rithmetic Every human being is a unique individual . . . each with a distinct personality. We all Live, Look, Love and Learn. The class of 73 did well with the third place Homecoming float, Pinocchio Nose We'll Win . HOMECOMING, October 17, was a beautiful night. To further add to the mood, the Varsity passed up the Western Rams 36--0. The dance was held in the activity room with music provided by the Fun Group from LaSalle. The highlight of the evening was the coronation of the queen, Christine Peterson, and the king James Lower. The dance concluded at 11:45 p.m. and was the end of a very successful Homecoming at Manlius High School. Homecoming Court for 1969 included (left to right): Sherri Oloffson and Joe DeBrock, Debbie Raabe and Dean Blackert, Pat Doty and Dan Thompson, Queen Cristine and King Jim, Chris Roush and Jerry Jacobson, Cindy Dale and Gail Edlef-son. One of the most successful endeavors during the year was the wrestling show sponsored by the seniors. Fans from Manlius and many surrounding communities packed the fieldhouse to see their favorite grapplers in action. Johnny Race, shown at the left with Mr. Miller, easily won the first bout while Mitsu Arakawa defeated Santiago Acosta in the second featured event. The real highlight of the evening, however, was the final bout, which pitted the Dillinger Brothers against the Crusher and Edouard Carpentier The Flying Frenchman . It was a barnburner from start to finish, ending, to the delight of the fans, in a victory for the popular team of Crusher-Carpentier. 11 Falstaff Players Present Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology Life In A Small Illinois Town At The Turn Of The Century Directed By Grant Andresen January 2--3, 1970 Cast: Dennis Lubbs Nita Nicholas Jim Lower Janice Kirkpatrick Dan Thompson Musical Accompaniment: Jerry Hadley Cheryl Sandrock 12 Teahouse of the August Moon May 8th and 16th Cast Jim Lower--Fisby Jerry Hadley--Sakini Janice KirkpatTick--Lotus Blossom Dennis Lubbs--Purdy Dan Thompson--Cregovich Tom Hoffman--Captain MacLean Roger Larson--Mr. Oshira Villagers Larry DeBrock Rick Oloffson Dave Kelm Debbie Creason Don Hadley Julie Kirkpatrick Deanna Wiggim Sherri Oloffson Terry Mullin Cheryl Sandrock Joe De Brock Greg Oloffson Marcy De Brock 15 Sweetheart Prom The Manlius and Western chapters of the FHA, and the Manlius FFA, combined on February 21, 1970 at Manlius High School for a sweetheart dance. The King and Queen were Jerry Jacobson and Julie Kirkpatrick. Attendants were as follows: 1st, Patti Doty and Doug Creason, 2nd, Sue VanOrmer, and Ronnie Johnson, 3rd, Chris Peterson, and Dave Neahring, 4th Terri Hartz and Donald Hadley. Christmas Party 18 61 All those present agreed that enchanting was the only word to describe one of the most beautiful proms in school history. Amid the lovely street scenes one could almost sense the sweetness of a spring evening in the city of lights. Music provided by the New Found Fun Group further enhanced the picture as we danced far into the night. The highlight of the evening came when Mr. Sale crowned Norita Nelson and Jeff Mullin 1970 Prom Queen and King. Senior attendants Chris Roush and Jerry Jacobson and Junior attendants Debbie Raabe and Rick Oloffson completed the court. After the dance the entire group chugged up to Emerald Hills Country Club to enjoy bowling, pool, and music provided by The Sea. The evening was topped off by breakfast. As the first light of day began to shine, the evening of enchantment was ended as the bumpy bus ride home broke the spell kindled by the night's activities. 21 MANLIUS COMMUNITY UNIT SCHOOLS District 306 Manlius. Varsity 9—0 Blackhawk Champs By the month of September not many people are quite ready for the game of football; except in Manlius that is! Last year at that time there were 44 gridders determined to prove that th$ Blackhawk Conference could be dominated by the smallest school, MANLIUS. Our team was big, fast, and inspired. All we had to do was win and that was exactly what we did. Wyoming 48—0 THE FIRST TASTE; A great crowd turned out to cheer the Devils on to a victory and the Devils certainly responded in |he correct fashion. Both the offense and defense were perfect as we rolled up 458 total yards and held Wyoming to a mere 62 yards. Mullin replaced the hurt Harp at halfback and did a fine job. Potter and Hansen both scored 18 points. Dunlap 18—6 THE EARLY SHOWDOWN; When the captains met at midfield for the toss of the coin, a Devil called the flip and won the toss. Since Dunlap was the visiting team they had the right to call the toss and therefore chose to receive. When we finally kicked off, Lower recovered the ball in the end zone for the only score of the first half. Our other scores were made by Olson intercepting a pass and Mullin on a three yard plunge. Walnut 30—6 BIG BLUE NOT SO BIG; The Red Devils put together another great game in taking Number 3. Balanced scoring and solid defense told the story. Touchdowns by Mullin, Hansen, and Potter showed our depth in the backfield. Thompson scored on a blocked punt. Coach couldn't say enough about the line after the game. Toulon 40—0 BUTCH CAME BACK; Toulon gave us the toughest first quarter we had had up until then, but every game has four quarters. Hansen hurt his knee on the opening kickoff but Harp was ready and waiting for action. Scores came on runs from Plumley, Potter and Mullin who had two. The final tally was a 30-yard pass play to Lower. FRONT: D. Hadley, D. Creason, E. Potter, B. Harp, A. Plumley, D. Blacken, M. Sanden. 2nd ROW: R. Rank, Mgr., J. Bohm, D. Lubbs, E. Donahue, L. Jensen, R. Oloffson, G. Edlefson, J. Mullin, Coach Bourquin. 3rd ROW: Coach Ricci, R. Olson, P. Hurley, L. DeBrock, M. Schuneman, A. Dale, R. Frank, P. Thompson. 4th ROW: M. Potter, J. Lower, D. Neahring, J. Jacobson, B. Wangelin, D. Thompson, B. Hansen. There were seven Devils picked to the ALL-CONFERENCE Blackhawk squads. Those who received first string offensive and defensive positions were Ed Potter, halfback; Dan Thompson, tackle; and Randy Olson, guard and end. Also on the first string defensive team were Ed Donahue, guard, and Jim Lower, linebacker. Dennis Lubbs made the 2nd string defensive tackle and Bud Hansen made 2nd string defensive end and offensive fullback. 31 COACHES Ricci Andresen Bourquin Princeville 10—0 THE UNDEFEATED; With 3 inches of water on the field and another 2 inches falling, the stage for this important battle was a huge mud puddle. Plumley scored the only touchdown on a quarterback sneak and Potter ran in the PAT. Neahring tracked down their quarterback in the end zone and accounted for the other points. The score didn't describe the game as Princeville never penetrated past the 50-yard line. Western 36—0 A HOMECOMING VICTORY; Although we didn't score in the first period, we still dominated the entire game and packed away No. 6 . Potter led the way by scoring 4 touchdowns and 3 PATs. The other score was a 20-yard pass play from Plumley to Crea-son. Bradford 36—0 NUMBER 7 ; Statistics again told the tale as the Devils marched 347 yards to Bradford's 87 yards. Scores by Hansen, Plumley, Potter, and Mullin proved to be too much for their so-called defense. On the other hand, our defense scored its fifth shutout in seven games. Wethersfield 50—12 EIGHT DOWN AND ONE TO GO; This was the first time that a Manlius team has ever beaten Wethersfield in a varsity event for the four years that the Senior class has been in high school. Two touchdowns were scored by both Hansen and Potter while Mullin scored one. Plumley threw 3 TD. passes, one to Crea-son, Lower, and Dale. The Red Devil's total offense was an unreal 654 yards to Wethersfield's 144 yards. Elmwood 12—6 AND THEN THERE WAS 1 ; This unbelievable year came to an unbelievable end. We had worked too long and too hard to give up. Elmwood was really fired up for the game and had every bit as much po-f tential as we did. Potter scored first on a short dive but then they came right back to tie it up with a long pass. With 35 seconds left and deep in our own territory a decision had to be made. Should we sit on the ball and run the clock out or should we go for the win and risk the tie with Princeville? We decided to go for the win and the next play took us to the 15 yard line. With 4 seconds on the clock, Plumley dropped a perfectly placed pass to Lower in the end zone. The season was over, we had our unblemished record, and the Seniors had their unforgetable memories. Basketball 1969-70 Although the final Blackhawk Conference standings list Manlius in ninth place with a 2--11 record, the Red Devils cannot be judged by statistics alone. One must look at the entire picture in perspective. From the onset of the season, Coach Andresen's efforts were hampered by illness and injury among the players. Two of last year's top scorers were out of action for the entire season. Despite the fact that losses far surpassed wins, one must realize that over 80% of those were losses of less than five points. Above all, the Devils must be admired and applauded for their drive and never-say-die spirit. What is past is now history. The season was by far not one of our best. Yet, the players as well as Coach Andresen deserve fair recognition for their efforts to bring Manlius a rewarding season. Senior Class Prophecy Dear Jerry, I was so diasppointed that you weren't at our class reunion last week. Everyone was looking forward to our Smothers Brothers routine once again. It was Just a riot when 1 arrived and found LOIS JENSEN and her Home Ec. class there preparing the food, and KAREN NELSON who is head waitress at Holiday Inn, was getting everyone to their tables. Seated to my left was NORITA NELSON, who is now married and raising her four fine children. She lives up in Dixon just a few blocks from BILLY and SALLY, who both have their degrees in Janitorial Science, and manage all the Illinois schools. Seated to my right was KEVIN CARPENTER, who, as you probably have heard, has written a new song called The Dedder , which is in the Top Ten. Kevin has a real fine band that plays for him; it's under the direction of TERRI HARTZ who composed and arranged all the music for JULIE KIRKPATRICK'S new movie, Wait Until Morning. After the meal, everyone got up and began to visit with their old friends, and the first ones 1 talked to were DOUC and JIM, who are now coaches for college football and basketball teams, after their great college careers in sports. I wish you could have been there to see the beautiful programs that we had. I guess MARCIE MILLER put a great deal of time into them, but of course the secretary to a billionaire, the United States', No. 1 lawyer, wouldn't find it so hard. I understand that CHUB LUBBS makes so much money as a lawyer, that he is making large donations to all agricultural businesses to help the poor American farmer. Speaking of wealthy people, I understand PAT DOTY isn't doing too bad as the hair stylist for the show that’s been on Broadway for the last twelve years: HAIR. By the way, did you know that MARSHA ALPAUGH has held the leading role for the past four years ? While 1 was talking to Pat, she told me that ED and SUE couldn't make it because their oldest boy was in a program at school, and Sue is president of the PTO. About 4:00 that afternoon, everyone began to hear a lot of noise and loud engines, and lo and behold, here came DON HADLEY and DAVE NEAHRING, who now have their own group of Hell's Angels. CHRIS PETERSON was unable to attend because she and Al were breaking some sort of record; I guess they're the first ones to make a honeymoon last for seven years. Say, I bet you didn't know that JEFF MULLIN has opened up his own medical center. I guess Jeff has let his hair grow and has an Afro style haircut. Before evening came, RANDY OLSON insisted that I go out and see his new car; it was one of those new ones by Ford that fold up into a suitcase. I understand he and ED DONAHUE were the engineers of the car. While we were out looking at the car, I noticed a large Rawleigh truck parked beside Randy, and came to find out that NITA NICHOLAS and REGINA ROMBOUTS are the Midwest Directors. I finally got to talk to Neta and she told me that ROSE MOHR and KARIN CLEMENTZ were both working in a hospital somewhere in California. RONNIE JOHNSON lives out West now too. He has decided to make the army his careec. (As you remember, Ronnie didn't quite make it to the draft board on time.) I also had a real nice chat with MIKE POTTER, who is still trying to find enough evidence to prove that flying saucers do exist. He told me that DAN THOMPSON is now a forest ranger at Yellowstone National Park, and hasn't been bach to Illinois since high school graduation for the Class of '72. CHRIS ROUSH is now teaching high school at Princeton. Her collection of paintings are now on tour throughout Europe. Just as everyone was ready to leave, there was a phone call from LEON JENSEN, who is an airplane pilot, and had lust had his plane hijacked to Australia and wouldn't get back in time. On the plane was KATHY KING, now married to a real nice minister. They live somewhere in the East. Well, I must get back to work now, the patients here at my nursing home get real mad when I forget to turn the stereo on so they can dance the Wheelchair Polka. Best of luck to you on your nightclub engagement in Vegas. I have all your records and listen to them often. Write when you find some free time. Hope I get to see you before the next ten years are up, but I guess I can always turn on the TV and see you.
