THE DEVIL 1966-67 MANLIUS HIGH SCHOOL MANLIUS, ILLINOIS OFFICERS: Editor- -Hilary’ Carlson Finance Manager—Verna Harp Advertising Manager--Jeannine Hockstatter Sports Editor—Jim Behrens Advisor--Mr. Eugene Burton FOREWORD School is teachers and students. It is music and sports. It is plays and parties and trips. To many people it is more than that. It is learning and teaching; culture, teammanship and sportsmanship; developing new talents, meeting new people, making new friends, and discovering new worlds. It is a world in itself. Manlius High School is all this and much more. Its influence does not begin with the first day as a freshman, nor does it end with graduation. Its effects are not restricted to the school grounds. They are seen throughout the community. Just as each influence and effect of MHS cannot begin to be named, neither can all the aspects of high school life be pictured. THE DEVIL is an attempt to do the impossible, just as high school life is. However, a student sometimes succeeds. We hope that this book is close to success. Hilary Carlson, Editor. 2 SPIRIT OF ’66 Thursday night, October 20, the homecoming festivities got underway at the school with a skit featuring the characters of the comic strip Peanuts . The snake dance was followed by a bonfire at the Manlius park. The Bradford dummy was thrown into the fire and the cheerleaders led the crowd in several cheers ending with the Manlius loyalty. It was a sunny afternoon for the parade. All morning class members were rushing around attending to last minute details on their floats. The parade finally got underway at 1:30. The floats passed by the judges downtown with the Sophomores getting first place on their We'll Make Monkeys Out of Bradford. Second place was taken by the Juniors with Type up a Victory, and the third place was Trap 'Em by the Seniors. 6 The homecoming game ended in defeat for the Manlius Red Devils. The score was Bradford--6, Manlius--0. At the dance the following night, October 22, the homecoming king and queen were crowned. The king was Dale (Butch) Sierens and the queen was Cynthia Ratliff. The attendants were Senior--Diana Roush and Doug Schu-ncman, and Nancy Oberle and Jim Behrens; Junior--Ruth Buckley and Mike Michlig; Sophomore — Karen Miller and Rick Raabe; and Freshman — Patti Doty and Jeff Mull in. The students and alumni were entertained by the Frank Black Combo. 7 FOOTBALL SQUAD FRONT ROW: Mr. Bourquin, M. Kelm, J. Kirkpatrick, J. Mul-lin, E. Potter, D. Wolford, C. Sandcn, Mr. Andresen. He was voted Most Valuable Player. 28 SPRING SPORTS Although our spring sports do not get much attention, they are still important. Our baseball team, coached by Mr. Andrcscn, played good ball this year, but they had a young team and had a few bad breaks. They had improved quite a bit by the end of the year and they should be good next year. Because of bad weather the track team was in few meets this year. They did participate in the County and Conference meets, where both the relay team and Darrell Anderson placed. Mr. Bourquin is the track coach, assisted by Mr. Ricci. The boys voted Nancy Oberle track queen this year. 342 s Track team in training! (below) Gee, that ground looks hard! 4 Dick, that's no way to wear a glove, and you're on the wrong page ! The speaker was Mr. Ralph Starenko from Augustana College. The basketball, baseball, and track teams were honored jointly in mid-May with a banquet. The speaker was the head basketball coach from Bradley, Mr. Joe Stowell. Mr. Starenko speaks. 31 ISLE OF GOLDEN DREAMS JR. SR. PROM 'Are we through already? THE END OF THE BEGINNING CLASS OF ’67 Senior Autographs Valedictorian What's a trip without cards? DIARY OF A DEVIL SUNDAY, MAY 28, 1967 Boarded Denver Zephyr for Colorado. Looked over kids from Crescent City Sheldon. Trip made more enjoyable by Doug's dancing fingers. Couldn't see from dome car for smoke. Take the hint? MONDAY, MAY 29 Tired from restless night. Arrived in Denver. Went to Colorado Springs by bus. Breathtaking mountains--or was it smoke? Checked into Motel de Ville. Lunch? Saw Pike's Peak, Cripple Creek, gold mine, and Continental Divide. Fun begins at six. Party at poolside. Cot to know kids from other schools. TUESDAY, MAY 30 Spent four hours at Royal Gorge. WOW! Drove on Skyline Drive around hairpin turns. Luckily no one wore hairpins. In evening some went on horseback ride and cookout in rain while others guarded motel (party time). Got to know kids from other schools better! 38 Doug and his dancing fingers entertain. DIARY OF A DEVIL I don't want to go out into that big, wide world all by my little lonely self! Maybe you can't take it, but I sure can! WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1 Toured Air Force Academy. Back to Denver. Checked into Shirley-Savoy Hotel. Hurray, free at last! Some went to movie at night while others guarded hotel (party time). Other schools lots better! THURSDAY, JUNE 2 Late to bed, early to rise, gives the kids sleepy eyes. Toured Denver mint. No free samples. Went to Lookout Mountain and Buffalo Bill's grave. All aboard! Back to Princeton. Doug's dancing fingers entertain again. Dome car sees much use. No sleep tonight. We'll be tired tomorrow. Who cares? FRIDAY, JUNE 3 Arrived home. Mixed emotions--tired (from no sleep), sad (to leave friends), dizzy (from smoke inhalation), cold (from no heat), sore (from rough trip), and happy (to be home)! ! ! ! Verna makes friends wherever she goes. CHORUS This year the chorus at M.H.S. has been very active. We put on two concerts, one at Christmas and one in spring, participated in the annual Blackhawk chorus festival, sang at high school baccalaureate, and received a rating of excellent at contest, held in Ashton. The high point of our year was receiving our new chorus robes, which we have been saving for for two years. They add so much to our overall appearance, and we would like to thank all who helped us to buy them. We went to contest at Ashton in March and earned a Superior rating, the first our band has received for many years. Among our other projects we put on a Christmas concert and a spring concert, with the chorus, and had a dinner. We are happy to say that again this year we had to buy more band uniforms for our ever growing membership. All in all, we had a very good and profitable year. CLARINET QUARTET A. Kerchner, K. Behrens, R. Jensen, K. Miller. BRASS SEXTET J. Behrens, D. Berry, T. Mullin, H. Carlson, N. Nelson, B. Jacobson. 42 LIBRARIANS The librarians at M.H.S. are in charge of keeping all the books in their proper place, putting magazines back, knowing where all reference material is, and keeping our library from falling apart. Everyone would be lost after two days without any librarians and we appreciate them. Mr. Lane appreciates the work of our librarians. The Horizon Club is the senior chapter of the Blue Birds. We are organized to do things for people. The activities for this year have included the annual trip to Chicago, our Christmas party, and the making of tray favors, for those people at the nursing home. HORIZON CLUB 43 FHA SITTING: D. SENIOR PROPHECY I walked into the ball room of Pbrky's Palace where they were just finishing the final touches for the 10th reunion of the class of 67 . Lighting the chandlier was Myron Hard, who is now the head janitor there. After I saw that the final touches had been made, 1 went to the Manlius Express which would be arriving shortly. Ah, yes, here it comes now and who do we see running it? Of course, the engineer is Mick Nelson. After he pulls it to a halt the first one to step off is Diana Roush who is now head nurse at the Michael Reese Hospital, located in Chicago. Following her is Doug Schuneman (as usual) who has followed in his father's footsteps and is now major general at Fort Knox. Next, stepping off of her own private car, is Christine Myra Humley who is returning from her one-year engagement at the Metropolitan Opera House. Following her is her world famous conductor, James Behrens. They arc chauffeured by David Donahue who just won the title of chauffeur of the year. Stumbling from the club car is Robert Clementz, president of Schlitz Inc., who lives HICH in the penthouse. Then comes Larry Olson who now owns the Culf of Mexico and swims to his heart's delight. Surrounded by eligible, young bachelors is our own Miss America, Carol Wangelin. As the train pulls out, there is the rest of our class. Arriving in her Cadillac is Verna Pierre Harp who now owns Mr. Quick's and Crystal Lake. Not far from Pork, of course, is Bean, the former Nancy Oberle with her little brood, all strumming on banjo . Coming from the country, we can see Dale Sierens driving in his air-conditioned tractor. He now owns and farms Bureau County. Next comes Janice Hampton operating her catering truck service which is to deliver the marvelous food for this banquet. Coming in from the sticks, better known as Thomas, is the former Cynthia Ratliff, who is now happily married to her brave soldier. Then we see Jim Draper flying in his self-made plane. No, he is not a pilot. That is his pastime, he is originally a farmer. First stepping off, assisted by the stewardess, Jeannine Hochstatter, is Ruth King, who is now president of the Sweet Sweet Baby Ruth Candy Bar Inc., in Colorado. Following her is Charles Nicholas now owner of the Nicholas Fur Agency in Alaska. Swaggering down the steps is none other than John Fordham surrounded by beautiful women, as he is now the All-American Playboy. As we all depart from our invigorating reunion, we say farewell, see you at the next reunion. We look forward to taking more part in the years to come. Curricular activities that were required were English, Algebra, and Biology. Other Freshmen courses were French, Industrial Arts, Home Economics, and Latin. During the year we had two cheerleaders elected to the J.V. squad, Patti Doty and Margie Miller. Jim Lower and Jerry Hadley were on the student council. We sold annual ads, held a dance and a dinner, and built a last place float for Homecoming.
