Manlius High School Salutes: Mr. Milbum For nine years Mr. Milbum has been a familiar face in the hall of Ivt.H.S. Soon after arriving here he found that spare time would be something very rare. Not only has he directed our bands, given music lessons, taught speech, directed plays, drove a bus, but also he has played in various extra athletic events, sponsored five senior classes, chaperoned six senior trips, been scorekeeper, scoutmaster, and taken part in little theater productions. The students and faculty of M.H.S. join in thanking Mr. Milbum for what he has done and in saying that we will miss him. M.H.S. wishes Mr. Nfilbum the best in the future as a professional scout. xv Now we'll get those A quiet day in the streets of 1 know that contact lens is seniors. Manlius. here somewhere?! FRESHMAN INITIATION On September 21, forty-two freshmen were brutally admitted to high school. We had a full day of fun and frolic (?) All morning whenever we saw a senior we recited a piece on how wonderful they were. In return we were decorated with lipstick, sour whip cream, shaving cream, molasses, catsup, and corn syrup. In the afternoon the whole school saw each freshman do a stunt, such as giving an egg shampoo or eating flour. That night the seniors gave a dance which we all had to attend, either by choice or by force. All in all we had a good time, but just wait till that class of 1971 comes along. Miss America, 1930 GRADUATION June fourth--an end and a beginning for the Manlius seniors. The solemn ceremony of graduation began after they had marched in to Pomp and Circumstance played by Mrs. Howard Johnson. Rev. Joos gave the invocation, followed by a speech given by the salu-tatorian, Christine Hochstatter. After the band had played two mumbers Ruth Ann Mohr gave the valedictory speech. The speaker, Dr. Apple, was very inspiring. Next some awards were given out. Those receiving them were Ruth Mohr, Chris Hochstatter, Jerry Verdick, Steve Doty, Glenda Fordham, Joe Lower, and Ken Nearhing. 5 r HOMECOMING OCTOBER 16, 1965 STYLISTS Homecoming Royalty: Joan Thompson, Bradley Larson, Darlene Anderson, Ken Neahring, Jerry Verdick, Glenda Fordham, Cynthia Ratliff, Douglas Schuneman, Mary Lower, Allen DeDecker. During the day the chorus practiced and at night they gave a concert which consisted of the mixed chorus, boys chorus, and girls chorus. On March 13, the mixed chorus and girls chorus participated in the state contest which was held at Buda. The mixed chorus received a superior rating and the girls received an excellent rating. During the year the chorus worked very hard to raise money for choir robes. They had two dinners, sold Stanley toothbrushes and had several concerts. The band helped the chorus by donating all the money which they made during the year. Due to the hard work of the chorus members and the director the robes were purchased. The chorus members think they had a very successful year. Jerry Verdick received Honorable Mention on the All-Conference Team and Ken Neahring won the annual Free Throw Trophy. I boarded the boat at New York and who should be in the cabin next to me but Glenda and Jerry. Jerry is now a successful accountant and they have six children. At dinner that night we found that most of our former classmates were on the same boat. I found my neighbor Ralph had bought 1000 acres of grazing land in North Dakota and turned it into a prosperous sheep ranch. Dean Rasmussen had married the proverbial girl-next-door and had merged both their fams. John Neidetcher has opened a brewery at Manlius and has made himself the official taster. We couldn't figure out what all the commotion was at the door. After fighting our way through the crowd we found the celebrity to be none other than Steve Doty. Professor Doty was recently awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his research on the Civil War. Right by his side is Darlene Anderson. Darlene is Steve's combination secretary-physical education director. Then with a flurry Linda Berry came through the door with her husband Jim. Linda is the fashion buyer for the nationally known Carson, Pirie, Scott and Co. Our attention was then turned to the band that was on board ship. It was then that we noticed Chris Konneck, still sitting in the comer waiting for Tom. They finally managed to get married. Marilyn Vols came at that moment. She reports that being married and holding down a job is pretty easy, especially if you're married to the boss. Do you hear bells? It's Annette De Decker! Annette explained that she's a bridal consultant now. She and Glenda are still scheming, only now Kenny is a professor of math at Harvard. Close behind Annette is Duane Clementz. Duane is still working on a formula for strained soup. Here come Richard and Sue Frank. Richard went into farming full force and now owns the Rancho Grande. His ranch is located south of our home town of Manlius and takes up 750 acres of land. Goodness gracious! Larry Nodine's all decked out in winter clothes. He owns a fur company now and does all his own trapping, Joe Lower just came in the door, still in his swimming trunks and carrying his surf board. Joe decided to follow in his brother's footsteps and went west to California. He reports that he still hasn't found the girl with money, a car, and looks. Paul Thompson Just came in the door with his artist's smock on. He's now a commercial artist for ESQUIRE magazine in New York City. Say, who's the emcee for tonight's performance? It's none other than our old classmate, Steve Van Ormer. Steve has gone on to become a famous comedian and is in demand all over the world. Who's doing all that shuffling? we might have known. It's Tom Foes. Tom's married and has a family now. The next morning everybody was up and ready to go. After the usual scurry of docking we hurried to grab a taxi and get out to Ruth's place. We must have made the rush hour traffic because we managed to get ourselves in a traffic jam. No wonder it was such a mess. Guess who was doing the directing of the traffic. It was none other than Mike Choinere. We stopped for a brief second to say HI and he told us to stop in at Dean and Al's Men's Hair Salon run by none other than Dean Vols and Allan Kerber. Not to be outdone, Carolyn Presnell had opened a beauty parlor next door for the men's wives. Now on to Ruth's. She has a beautiful home. In comparing notes I found she runs, in her spare time, a medical center for the local natives. Ruth's married now and her husband is the producer of the stage play My Fair Lady, now playing in Rio. Ruth tells me that Doug Borop is playing the lead role in it. I told Ruth I finally married my guy from Wyanet. We own and operate a summer camp for children in the Northern part of Illinois. Well, back to the festivities in the main house. I wonder where we can go for the next reunion. 59 CLASS OF “66” The Junior Class had a naturally busy year. Of course, we sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom. This accounts for our busy year. We also had bake sales, dances, sold stationery and magazines. We had the responsibility of running the coat check at the basketball games. Our sponsors were Mr. Bourquin and Mr. Andresen. SOPHOMORE CLASS The Sophomore class started the school year with 20 students; during the year we gained one boy, Dave Donahue. We participated in many activities, starting off the year by making a Homecoming float. We also had 2 dances, 2 dinners, a bake sale, and sold pens. Our class advisor was Mr. Jenkins. Six of our classmates placed in the top ninety percent in the NEDT tests; also six our our classmates were probationary members on the Honor Society. 62 NEXT YEAR’S DRIVERS? We also sold magazines and we had the highest sales for the four classes. This spring we are planning another dance and a picnic. We feel that our first year in high school has been a big accomplishment and that our remaining years at M.H.S. we will go on to even greater heights. This picture shows how much everyone enjoyed one of our activities, a dinner held March 17th. It went off very well because of the special preparation by the mothers and Mr. Burton, our advisor.
