CLASS OFFICERS: SEATED: vice president, Butch Sierens; president, Doug Schuneman. STANDING: reporter, JohnFordham; treasurer, Verna Harp; secretary, Chris Plumley. The freshmen quickly got into the swing of high school life and were very busy with activities throughout the year. We held two record dances, decorated for the homecoming float, had a bake sale, car wash, and sold pins with chain guards. We feel we had a very successful year. Our advisor was Mr. Burton. Initiation was a big day for the freshmen. They were treated to free meals of baby food, lemon juice, raw eggs, etc. by the seniors. The class also enjoyed a parade downtown at noon hour, although it was disrupted several times by air raids. An all-school assembly was also held in the afternoon of Initiation Day in honor of the freshmen. Latin class was never like this!! 28

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN On May 2, 1964, the juniors of MHS treated the seniors to their last high school prom. The banquet, served by the junior mothers, featured turkey (with all the trimmings). The room was attractively decorated in orchid and white for the dance, which began at 9:00. Music was furnished by the DeVrieze Orchestra. Decorations included a false ceiling or orchid and white streamers, angels and stars, and a winding stairway to the stars in the middle of the dance floor. The highlight of the night was the crowning of the king and queen, Jim Thompson and Betty Nanninga. Senior attendants were Sam Johnson and Nancy Dabler. Junior attendants were Jerry Verdick, Glenda Fordham, Dean Vols, and Annette DeDecker. 30
