We struggled through the first year under the supervision of Mr. Keist, principal, Mr. Rice, Mr. Davidson, Mr. Veach, Mr. Fay, Rev. Zeltin, Miss Code, Mrs. Loos, and Miss Coleman. Our first few weeks were spent in getting acquainted with other classmates, and getting to the proper classes on time. The initiation took place the second week of school. During the day we unwillingly performed before the entire student body, and that evening the seniors gave us a party which completely made up for the day's sufferings. For the first year we had as our class officers: president, jerry Dablerg vice president, Annevieve Schmidt, secretary and treasurer, Ronnie Hewitt, student council, Norma Hartz and Dick Crane. Our sponsor was Mr. Rice. During our freshman year Minnie Hodge and Margaret Schmitt joined our happy throng, but Alice Pope and Mary Carlson left us, thus making a total of 27. In the fall of '48, as sophomores, we marched back into Manlius High. Our teachers for this year were Mr. Keist, principal, Mr. Rice, Mr. David- son, Mr. Veach, Mr. Fay, Mr. Schollc, Rev. Zeltin, Miss Rita johnson, Miss Code, Mrs. Yates, and Miss Coleman. Officers chosen for this ear were: resident, Annevieve Schmidt' vice Y U , president, Norma Hartz, secretary and treasurer, Frances Cogginsg student coun- cil, Joanne Hewitt and Ronnie Hewitt. Mr. Scholle was our sponsor. Being sophomores, our social privileges were increased. The first of these social affairs was our class dance. This dance proved to be a huge success. Spin Lawrence provided the music for this gala affair. This year we lost Dick Crane, Robert Hanson, Marvin Frank, and Gloria Henson. Marjorie Eickmeier came from Bureau Township to increase our class roll to 21. As jolly juniors we entered the doors of Manlius High in the fall of '50. This year we have only 21 members. , J-OHNNE Hswftt lipvfvfffcf NEWFN5 M'o'VN'DE 'ja H04-75 4! n V if-m. owvxn Hn rtz Ldharfefve House ' Eumforj ,ns- I are-nf 3 feolosrfif' kjj.,Mf.5oN Senior Class History I C 0 ntinuedl This year we elected the following officers: president, Ronnie Hewitt, vice president, Norma Hartz, secretary, Joanne Hewitt, treasurer, Charlene House. Our advisors were Miss Code and Mr. Zuege. Few changes took place in the teaching staff. Faculty members were: principal, Mr. Keistg Mr. Rice, Mr. Zuege, Mr. Scholle, Mr. Kinnamon, Mr. Davidson, Mrs. Yates, Miss Code, Mrs. Small, Miss Ropp, and Mrs. Johnson. Our activities consisted of a public dance and a class play, Seventeen is Terrific , which was presented during the first part of the second semester. We were given the responsibility of preparing for the junior-senior prom. Our theme was Mayday Romp , and it took a great deal of work and effort to make it as pretty as it turned out to be. I In August of lil, 21 seniors entered the high school for their last year. . This year we were under the supervision of Mr. Keist, principal, Mrs. Yates, Miss Code, Mrs. Small, Miss Hensel, Mrs. johnson, Mr. Davidson, Mr. Vasen, Mr. Kinne, Mr. Gleich, and Mr. Rice, who was later replaced by Mt. Fred Russell. This year we chose the following oliicers: president, Ronnie Hewitt, vice president, Jerry Dabler, secretary, Norma Hartz, treasurer, Margaret Schmitt. Our sponsors this year were Mrs. Yates and Mr. Davidson. Our class sponsored the homecoming dance this year for the first time, breaking the tradition of the alumni sponsorship. Our class play, The Camp- bells Are Coming , which was presented to the public in the early spring, was a huge success. We plan to take our senior trip the first week of june. Desti- nation - Washington, D. C. S Virginia Lundgten A Charlene House Q Spoxisored by: Schmidt Sales and Service, Manliusg Harry Berry, Minlius N 1952 Class Prophecy' The other day as I was traveling from Chicago to Manlius to display my fashions at Marge's Department Store - Marjorie gained experience in this line by working in the dime store on Saturdays throughout the school year - I stopped at a bus station to inquire directions. While talking to the ticket agent, I saw Norma Hartz, an old classmate, getting off the bus. I asked her if she would care to go with me to Manlius and she said she would. As we were traveling along route 88, we noticed the temperature of the car rising and we decided we had better stop at the next farm house. When we arrived at this attractive farm house, we noticed that the farm wife was no other than Mrs. Virginia Hurst, a classmate. She invited us to stay for dinner and then she told us that Annevieve Schmidt was to sing in an opera that afternoon on television and invited us to stay - Annevieve received her voice training from M.H.S. As the car was now repaired, we decided to start out again for Manlius and arrived in the suburbs in thirty minutes. Wie soon learned by reading all the posters that Charlene House was campaigning for governor - Charlene always had this ambition in high school. Arriving at the department store and viewing the models for the style show, we recognized Minnie Hodge with her world-wide known hair style, the horse's tail. We also recognized Joanne Hewitt and Margaret Schmidt modeling their red and white checkerboard blouses similar to the ones worn during their high school daze, As we left the department store to mail the decisions on the style show, the post-master was none other than Jerry Dabler - this was not surprising because jerry always did like to play post office. While we were hunting for a hotel, we passed a locker which was operated by Mr. and Mrs. james Glafka, the former Kay Rumbold -- could this be the reason they were always in the hallway at school? We asked if we might spend the night and then we inquired about the night entertainment of Manlius. We were undecided as to whether to attend Judy Cook's concert, Gyles Gish's new bowling alley which doesn't need pin setters, or the Ohio-Manlius game. Ronnie Hewitt, a Little Eight Star of 52 was coaching the Red Devils. But before we could decide, Mr. and Mrs. Neal Clementz had learned of our arrival in town and asked us to help them celebrate their tenth wedding anni- versary. Mrs. Clementz, or janet Vandermoon, told us that Shirley Pont had taken a position as head nurse of the hospital. We were looking for the weather report in the local newspaper when we noticed Janet Salzmann was the editor - janet received her experience while she was editor of the school paper, The Reflectorf, Before leaving Manlius we decided to look at the new high' school. While we were wandering through the building we saw Bobby Lind. He told us he was now head instructor of the Ag department. As time was going fast, we decided we had better start for home. While we were driving out of the city, we noticed a neon sign flashing Gumfory's Junk Yard. Carl always did have an eye for old cars. Sam Eth- eridge, a former classmate, was visiting Carl. Sam told us he was employed by the Wrigley Chewing Gum Co. His job was testing the flavor of the gum - he had experience in this line before leaving M.H.S. I left Norma at her home in Walnut just in time to prepare supper for her family. I then started back to my home in Chicago. This is the last of the Class of 52. Any resemblance to persons living, dead, or otherwise is purely intentional. Anyone wishing to write to the authors of this should address their letters to Frances Coggins or Norma Hartz. The class was composed of 15 girls and ll boys, all of whom are looking forward to graduation in 1953. At the beginning of the year a new member, Shirley Allen, was added to our class. She moved here from Benton Township. During the second semester we lost two members of our class. Helena Wertz moved to Princeton and Dick Smith quit school and went to work. During the football season we put on a bake sale, some of our boys went out for football, but they did their share in helping the class. The Junior Class was given the opportunity to decorate the football field for the Homecoming. It was a lot of fun and it took a lot of time and hard work. Also during the school year we had a couple of chili dinners for the entire school. They ,proved to be a success and it seemed everyone enjoyed them. This was the first attempt at high school acting, but with everyones fine cooperation it turned out a success. At the present time we are planning on a dance some time in April. We are also busy working on the Junior and Senior banquet and prom. We hope this affair will be the biggest and most successful of the year. Our first game of the season was a victory over Sheffield, 24-O. The first touchdown of the year was made by Ronnie. Our next game was at Malden. With a score of 33-12, we boosted our winning streak to the magic 2O mark. Our next game was with Wyanet, played on the Manlius gridiron. With Ron- nie and Gyles setting the pace with four and two touchdowns, respectively, an easy victory of 38-13 was the outcome. Manlius next took a trip to Tiskilwa. With a nip and tuck battle all the way, we finally came out ahead with a score of 14-7. A crowd of more than 1,250 fans jammed Manlius to see the homecoming battle between Manlius and Ohio. This was the decisive game for the Little 8 Crown. In the second quarter Ronnie brought the crowd to its feet with a 98 yard dash for a touch- down. Both teams fought a scrapy battle all the way, but Ohio refused to be beaten. They edged us out by a slim margin of only one extra point, making a score of 19-18, thus ending the longest high school football winning streak in the state of Illinois, with the grand total of 22. Manlius made a strong come- back by beating Buda the following week with a score of 66-20. The Manlius Redevils were host to Bureau in the seventh game of the season. Manlius led all the way with a score of 32-7 at the half, and continued to run wild for the rest of the game with a score of 52-14 at the end. Manlius, again traveling away from home, were guests of La Moille. This was a one- sided game with a score of 55-O. Manlius scored touchdowns in every period. The game with Neponset was played in the afternoon, on the muddy field at Neponset. Ronnie ran wild with five touchdowns which were all long runs, making the score 45-12. Ronnie scored a total of 181 points. Three of the Manlius boys placed on the All-Star team picked by the players and coaches of the Little Eight conference. They were: Bob Lind at Center, Fred Dobbeke at Tackle, and Ronnie Hewitt at Half. Ronnie was the only player who was a unanimous choice of all. isponsored by: Wyanet Hardware, Wy'anetg 0. F. We overcame our lack of heights to win the Little 8 Championship, and placed second in the Polo Holiday Tournament. With the grit of the team and the backing of the fans, the reddevils spurred on never to lose a game on the home floor. Their record for the year was that of 22 wins and only 5 losses. Seniors on this year's squad were: Ronnie Hewitt, Bob Lind, jim Glafka, and jerry Dabler. The following boys will come back to make the nucleus of our first string next year: Bill Lickhart, Lewis Reed, Bill Doty, Dick johnson, Charles Hensen, and Dick Anderson. Our Junior Varsity, coached by Mr. Vasen, had a good season, winning twelve and losing seven. After beating Atkinson and Tampico in the Annawan Invitational Fresh.-Soph. Tournament, we played Erie for the championship and were beaten by only a small margin. After winning three new trophies this year, we thought we would mention about the new trophy case that was completed and put up at the head of the stairs of the main entrance. This trophy case was made possible by the money left by the class of 1950. Our overall strength will not be too great as we will lack depth in most events. In the mile run we are pretty well set. We have jim Glafka and Bob Lind. jim set a new conference record last year and Bob placed 4th in the conference meet. Ronnie will prove valuable in the broad jump and the dashes, having placed high in both last year. Gyles Gish and Don Mueller both are lighting it out for honors in the 440 and the 220. Lewis Reed should do well in the high jtunp and the pole vault. He tied for 2nd in the high jump last year in the conference meet. This year he will also work on the 880. Bill Lickhart will help in the discus and the 220. Bob Cooksey should pick up points in the dashes and relay. The sophomore class is represented by only four-Larry Hurst, Dave Van Ormer, Bob Pyse, and Weldon Wilkensen. Hurst and Van Ormer are working on the hurdles and relay and the other two are working on the half mile run. Don Tracy, who placed third in the State Grade School finals in the 440, will lead the freshmen reporting for the first time. Bucky Hensen should help in the dashesg Larry Sugars in the quarterg and Perry Nelson and Harold Metz in the weights. The schedule of meets is as follows: April 8-Manlius, Wyanet, LaMoille at Scheflield April 12--Geneseo Relays. April 15-Manlius, Buda at Ohio. April 22-Bureau, Malden at Manlius. When section two of the seventh grade assembled last September, we had an enroll- ment of thirteen boys and ten girls. During the first semester Carolyn Bell moved to Kentucky and Lyman Allen from West Bureau joined our ranks. During the second semester Shirley Evans moved to Sheffield and Frances Foy came from Tampico to join our group. It took us a little while to get accustomed to our new environment. We have enjoyed many privileges offered in Jr. High, such as: band, chorus, shop, home ec., and physical education. We have especially enjoyed having the gym to play in at noon during the cold winter months. We had a gift exchange and Christmas tree but due to bad weather few were here to enjoy it. We enjoyed a Valentine party on February 14. We are looking forward to a jr. High picnic some time soon. On March 29, Mr. Vasen, our science teacher, took all the seventh grade on a science trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Class officers for the first semester were: president, Norman Barry, vice-president, Larry Lubbs, secretary, Francis Schaeferg treasurer, Janice johnson. Class officers for the second semester were: president, jack Dablerg vice-president, Medley Tornow, secretary, Janice Johnson, treasurer, Norman Berry. Janice Johnson and Glenda Rogers were elected cheerleaders from our room. 7B Firrt Roux' Charlotte Fisher, Norman Berry, Jack Dabler, Mrs. Ballard, Medley Tornow, Janice Johnson, and Francis Schaefer. Sponsored by: Suburban Furniture Co. and Hudson Funeral Home, Princeton 7A Due to the large number of students entering junior High last fall, it was necessary to divide them into two sections. Section I of the seventh grade, with an average enrollment of 22 pupils, has had an interesting year of study and play. In addition to the regular school work, the 17 boys and 5 girls have participated in chorus, band, physical education, shop, and home economics, plus an enjoyable party or two. At the Christmas season, the class took the decoration of the room and windows as a class project, and a very beautiful tree was decorated and an interesting village scene painted on the windows of the room. Hearts and flowers were in order at the Valentine Party held later on in the year. Also, we are looking forward to a class picnic soon. During the year, we had one loss to our group on the transfer of Sonia Zeltin whom we miss very much, and one addition whom we welcomed, Rhuben Floyd. The class officers of the 22-A Club elected for the first semester were: Sonia Zeltin, presidentg La Verne Salzmann, vice-presidentg Charles Hewitt, secretary, and john Neah- ring, treasurer. Our second semester officers: jimmy Miller, president, Dean Schaefer, vice-president, Duane Schaefer, treasurer, and Anita Raabe, secretary. A few changes were made, however, by the end of the year Tom Bell, Ronald Kuepker, Don Wertz, and George' Schmitt moved out, and Clarence Frank, Shirley Benoodt, and Bill Chesney moved in. As a parting gift for the junior High, we donated a trophy case, made by the boys in shop class. During the basketball season we operated a concession stand to make money for our treasury. Our class officers were as follows: first semester president, George Schmitt, vice-presi- dent, Marlene Fordham, secretary, Rosalie Snodgrass, treasurer, Beth Swanson, reporter, Patti Anderson. Second semester president, Theora Wiseman, vice-president, Dennis Anderson, secretary, Katherine Miller, treasurer, Betti Anderson, reporter, Rita Cooksey.
