YESTERDAY AND TOMORROW ANLEY MEMORIES is reaching The sevenTh rnilesTone. The sTaTT has asked me To Take you on a brieT journey over The semesTers since SepTember I934. Many guesTions arose when The TirsT volume was planned. Should There be adverTising? ls an annual or a semi-annual beTTer? T-low large? Who is To be Tinancially responsible? ls The book Tor and by graduaTes, or Tor The school? How much and whaT kind oT liTerary conTenT is mosT desirable? The Tinding oT righT answers To These guesTions by succeeding groups oT seniors has been an inTeresTing developmenT. IT has Taken These years To esTablish general policies besT suiTed To express someThing oT Tour years aT Manley. Some oT These ideas resemble Those oT neighboring schools, while oThers iusT belong To us here. OuT oT These eTTorTs has grown an insTiTuTion wiTh Tine TradiTions aTTecTionaTely called, Manley Memories. Now, no one would wanT To cheapen The pages wiTh adverTising. The measure oT worTh is gualiTy, noT The number of pages. The cenTer oT inTeresT is The senior group and The various acTiviTies in which They are concerned. Seniors produce and Tinance This publicaTion. Many undergraduaTes do noT yeT undersTand ThaT They are given The opporTuniTy To buy a book aT less Than half The acTual cosT. Minimum publicaTion cosTs are based on an ediTion oT one Thousand copies. Since The seniors do noT use This number Themselves, The surplus is sold aT a lower price so ThaT many sTudenTs may be able To aTford a copy. Each semesTer has added To my pleasure in reading a book so Tilled wiTh TascinaT- ing views, illusTraTions, phoTos, and arTicles. Much Tine Tun Trom our daily lives has been caughT in enduring Torm, and The pages have been unsullied by Things vulgar, coarse, or Trivial. May Manley Memories keep on growing Through The years! May iT increasingly convey To each reader someThing oT The beauTy oT young liTe, The upward look oT spiriTual vision, and The inspiraTion oT Tine ideals. I Sincerely yours, HONOR ROLL l-ligh scholasTic achievemenTs have always been ToremosT among The ideals OT Manley's sTudenTs. To Those lisTed scholars who have achieved an average oT 9O or more during Their Tour years aT Manley we exTend our congraTulaTions. l-leading This group oT selecT sTudenTs is DimiTra Kachiroubas, our ValedicTorian. gave us many happy momenfs of pleasure as we wifnessed fhe 4A Drama Tournamenf. DOWN MEMORY LANE AnneHe Coine and Marvin Sfeinberg HE sands of Time move swiffly on, unhampered by human forces. Thus does Time, fhe enemy of all mankind, fake wifh if in ifs furious onslaughf fo efernify fhose precious momenfs we have lived, loved, and losfg leaving in ifs wake ioy and sorrow alike, fo be lived and relived as we now iourney down Memory Lane. Wifh Time in ifs infancy, we found ourselves simple and naive freshmen, mere planefs in fhe huge universe-Manley. We were soon fo learn self-sufficiency, self- reliance, and fhe value of co-operafion. lf is wifh fond memory fhaf we recall changing The name of our school paper from fhe Bi-Weekly fo fhe Manlegram and recollecf wifh pride fhaf ifs name was besfowed upon if by a member of our own class. Sweeping forward wifh Time, we, as sophomores, saw fhe inaugurafion af Manley of fhe Fire Marshals, fhe Sfudenf Congress, and fhe formafion of various ofher organ- izafions such as fhe Creafive Wrifing Class and Magazine Arfs Class who collaborafe in planning fhe Manley Memories. Looking back, Memory reminds us fhaf we also culfivafed a greaf inferesf in music and organized fhe firsf Music Fesfival, which has since become a cherished annual evenf af Manley. Wifh proud Memory serving us well, we recall fhaf as Juniors, fhe Manley moffo, Always Working, Never Shirking, was infroduced by a member of our own class. Wifh fhis moffo as our goal, we cheered our Junior baskefball feam fo vicfory which ulfimafely resulfed in fhe cify championship. Af fhe end of our junior year, wifh Time fleeing on swiff wings, our Girls' Chorus fook firsf place in fhe annual Music Confesf, and fo our greaf pride our Manlegram received a rafing of excellenf by fhe Quill and Scroll, lnfernafional Honorary Sociefy for High School Journalisfs. Wifh Time approach- ing mafurify, we again wifnessed fhe vicfory of our Junior Baskefeers. And yef 'fwas nof so long ago, fhaf grown man was mere lad. Wi+h Time and Memory becoming more closely allied, we chose as our senior leaders: Harry Sfone, Presidenfg Dimifra Kachiroubas, Vice-Presidenfg Rufh Dermer, Secrefary: Maffhew Pacifico, Treasurer: and Nafhan Cofovsky, Procfor. For fhe firsf fime in Manley hisfory, fwo senior clubs funcfioned, fhe Triple M and fhe P. A. L. S. These organizafions received pins as an indicafion of fheir membership and insfigafed social confacfs befween boys and girls and division rooms. Serving as guide, our Memory reminds us fhaf a group of senior girls organized fhe Sing Band, a group whose name speaks for ifself and who very offen delighfed us af assemblies and socials wifh fheir pleasanf voices. Wifh Time relenflessly going forward, we remember fhaf fhe Drama Class 5 V .f' Z lg fl W W W W A X WMWWW f 4 Q . ffniiqfiyfil i fu 'ig 11' w,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,lwff '-: 'Vi f,,f,i,l.7Fi,I 1 W Y 1 -I - , :Ln 11 411..-- q g gy, 2 I : 'f 1 , . 1,1 , , 1,597 4 'ww-if--,ff 1- - -v-wvf'1'- .ami 'axis Q 2' f fl 1: lzi 1' -1455 v -:.-:um 4 f , Ao. 0 ' I 1 As our class giff we presenfed fhe school wifh fwo campus free and shrub groups, fhree picfures, and eguipmenf for fhe making of a public address sysfem for fhe audiforium by fhe physics classes. Through fhe pafience and indulgence of an under- sfanding and efficienf faculfy, we have been changed from simple, naive freshmen fo men and women ably equipped fo face all obsfacles wifh infelligence, courage, and faifh in fhe fufure. Blending fhe presenf wifh fhe pasf, Time casfs us on fho shores of fhe fufure fo conquer, accom- plish, and shape fhe desfiny of fhe coming generafion.
