Manley sTudenTs and TaculTy, Too, are mounTain climbers. When aT TirsT They began Their Trek in SepTember oT I933, There were many in each group who scoTTed aT The idea, believing The rocky heap To be unscalable. OThers, sTanding aT The boTTom and looking up aT The Tar-disTanT peak, ThoughT oT The years oT Toil necessary before The Top could be reached and became less enThusiasTic. BuT There were sTill oThers who wiTh eyes glued To The ulTimaTe goal saw noT The obsTacles buT only The rewards and, encouraging The oThers, Themselves led The way. The mounTain To be climbed was Progress and The goal was a beauTiTul school oTTering all advanTages To inTelligenT sTudenTs oT high moral sTandards. AT TirsT The going was very diTFiculT. Thorns in The shape of insuTTicienT books and equipmenT hampered advancemenT. The members oT The TaculTy were new To each oTher and could noT cooperaTe eTTecTively. There was no blazed Trail, no esTablished rouTine. As The TirsT Torward sTep, a newspaper, which migh+ supporT The acTiviTies of The school, reporT iTs news, and voice iTs opinions, was published. The sTudenTs banded TogeTher in clubs and organizaTions. When The Time came in January, l935 Tor The members oT The TirsT graduaTing class To cede Their places in The TronT ranks oT The climbers To The succeeding class, They issued a publicaTion called The Manley Memories, which has been published by each graduaTing class since. The Tounding of The STudenT Congress was like The Tinding oT an easier paTh up The mounTain. This group, repre- senTing The viewpoinTs and needs of The sTudenTs in The various grades, has been insTrumenTal in securing many improvemenTs. As Time wenT on These accomplishmenTs began To bear TruiT. Those who had shown lack oT inTeresT hereToTore joined whole-hearTedly in The sTruggle Toward Progress. ' Pausing on a plaTeau The ManleyiTes looked abouT aT Their surroundings-The paper-liTTered halls, cinder-sTrewn grounds, and barren, dirTy assembly hall. Again They seT oTT wiTh enThusiasm up The roacl Toward beauTiTicaTion. The TirsT milesTone was The grading and Terracing of The campus, and The planTing oT grass, various bushes, and Trees. LaTer a TorTy-TooT rock garden was creaTed in The cenTer oT The quadrangle and along The walls oT The building shrubs were planTed. The meTamorphosis of The assembly hall was accomplished by The painTing oT Three murals on one wall and The redecoraTing oT The enTire audiTorium in harmonizing Tones. Manley is now Truly called Manley BeauTiTul. As The mounTain climber looks back over The road he has journeyed, so ManleyiTes paused on The occasion of Their TirsT Open l-louse. AT ThaT Time The work and achieve- menTs oT every deparTmenT in The school were displayed and a Tirmer bond esTablishecl beTween The school and The communiTy. AT The end oT iTs TirsT Tour years as a high school, Manley seems To have reached The peak oT Progress. However, The TaculTy and sTudenTs will always Tind higher peaks To scale in TurThering The beauTy and advancing The sTandards oT Their school.
