'W' ', . ,' -r , Q 7' 'H Y Q , ATURDAY October 26 1935 marked the tenth anniversary of the death of one of Chicago's most prominent citizens, an engineer of whom we may be proud. , This beautiful educational institution we know as Manley High School was built to honor the name of the hero, who died as the result of injuries sustained in 1923 while en- gineer at the Moos School. An accident in the boiler room occurred in mid-day while the plant was in operation. The lives of twelve hundred pupils and teachers were at stake if the boiler exploded. An explosion was imminent if somebody didn't take immediate action Disregarding the danger to his own life, HUGH MANLEY heroically dashed into the boiler room, facing a flood of steam and' scalding water, and closed a supply valve, prevent- ing the explosion. He was so badly injured that he was disabled, and as a result of his burns he died two years later, on October 26, 1925, al: the age of 68. At a memorial service held by the Board of Education in 1929, the president, Mr. Wal- lace H. Caldwell, said: The reason for the selection of any name for a school by the mem- bers of the Board is in order that the character and the life of the bearer may be reflected into the lives of the children who attend that school. ln all four hundred odd schools in Chicago, l venture to say that there has been none given a more deserving name than that of HUGH MANLEY. What better example could be given to the boys and girls, our citizens of tomorrow, than that of the man who fulfilled his duty even though he knew it meant the supreme sacrifice?
