DOUGLAS VAN BRAMER DYNAMIC personality, tireless energy, and a sparkling vivacity characterize one of Manley's truest friends. Although Mr. Van Bramer is no longer with us, his influence lingers on. He laid well the foun- dation upon which the spirit of Manley rests. Unstinted in his devotion to the building of a dis- tinctive high school, he inspired us to noble purposes. ln gratitude for his achievement during our first troublous year, and with cherished memories of his wise counsel, we dedicate this annual to DOUGLAS VAN BRAMER OUR FRIEND AND FORMER Class of June I936 COUNSELLOR WX ki' s I4-li J' 1 1' s ,rf new as -'L 'K N-61 fs xv X 'Tm X .xi fi, .1 Nik, V, fm 1 V? fm an-6' EBM. 'W' ', . ,' -r , Q 7' 'H Y Q , ATURDAY October 26 1935 marked the tenth anniversary of the death of one of Chicago's most prominent citizens, an engineer of whom we may be proud. , This beautiful educational institution we know as Manley High School was built to honor the name of the hero, who died as the result of injuries sustained in 1923 while en- gineer at the Moos School. An accident in the boiler room occurred in mid-day while the plant was in operation. The lives of twelve hundred pupils and teachers were at stake if the boiler exploded. An explosion was imminent if somebody didn't take immediate action Disregarding the danger to his own life, HUGH MANLEY heroically dashed into the boiler room, facing a flood of steam and' scalding water, and closed a supply valve, prevent- ing the explosion. He was so badly injured that he was disabled, and as a result of his burns he died two years later, on October 26, 1925, al: the age of 68. At a memorial service held by the Board of Education in 1929, the president, Mr. Wal- lace H. Caldwell, said: The reason for the selection of any name for a school by the mem- bers of the Board is in order that the character and the life of the bearer may be reflected into the lives of the children who attend that school. ln all four hundred odd schools in Chicago, l venture to say that there has been none given a more deserving name than that of HUGH MANLEY. What better example could be given to the boys and girls, our citizens of tomorrow, than that of the man who fulfilled his duty even though he knew it meant the supreme sacrifice? orricms - ,,g,r,mss QFJUNE193o . A new class was being tormed and it was the task ot Mrs. Mittendort to select twenty appli- cants tor the Creative Writing class, Each person was questioned concerning his past experience with literary writing. The students who claimed to have worked on the technical end ot publications were sent to Mr. Middendortt. Slowly but surely twenty were singled out and atter a 'Few days had passed, work was begun. The tirst tew weeks were devoted not to the Manley Memories but to cre- ative writing. Short stories, descriptions, biographies and essays occupied all ot the time until the seniors had tilled out and turned in the torms describing the ambition and hobby ot each writer. Then work began in earnest. Senior editors, one tor the boys, the other tor the girls, were appointed and put in charge ot writing the short sketches that were to be placed adjacent to the graduates' pictures in the annual. The co-editors-in-chiet were responsible tor everything. Every phase ot the book had to be accounted tor. The placing ot the various groups-was lett to the discretion ot the editors, and the associate editors otten suggested changes, some ot which were adopted. This necessitated the revising ot parts ot the book. Sports editors were assigned to cover the many departments ot both boys' and girls' athletics, while the club editors saw to it that when the group pictures were taken, names were in the right order and spelled correctly. Write-ups that were completed and O. Kfd were turned over to the statt typist, who prepared typewritten copy which was checked again tor typographical errors. As material was written and turned in, Mrs. Mittendortt rechecked it and sent it to the magazine arts class to be arranged in proper torm tor publication. This class also prepared layouts tor the engraver and printer and executed what art work was needed. The two classes worked in collaboration so that their combined ettorts resulted in the book you are reading. ' HONOR SOCIETY FIRST ROW: P. Rubinolt, N. Pritilcin, S. Klcment, S. M. Wollc, M. Membership is granted on the basis ot attainment ot the super honor roll three successive times, and the students character, diligence and initiative are taken into account. A membership committee checks upon the essential qualities ot each prospec- tive member. The society is now formulating plans 'tor prompt attiliation with the National Honor Society. Once a year the society sponsors an Honor Assembly, at which awards are presented to outstanding students. Membership in the Honor Society is an achievement worthy ot any Manley student who has ability and the desire to succeed. Here's something new, something different! The drama class, sponsored and directed by Miss Marian Smith, was held regu- Iarly during the semester to allow the students ample time in which to prepare tor the customary Senior stage productions. During this time its members successtully accom- plished many proiects. Plays were read, reported upon, acted and criticised in class. In this way the good and bad points ot play writing and acting were discovered. To gain practice in play production, tourteen chairmen were appointed to direct small groups in one-act plays which were presented betore the class in Manley I-Iall tor constructive criticisms. The chairmen were: Ann Rubacha, Ethel Paulson, Sol Fine, Sam Chernavsky, Eva Grubman, Fred Levin, Bernard Markel, Esther Moskowitz, Geral- dine Goodman, Dorothy Schorow, Marion Levy, Ben Abrams, Betty Pritikin and Miriam Cohen. When the class was requested to give a ten minute sketch tor ManIey's day on WJJD's high school program, An Excellent Thing In Women, by John D. Shaver, was immediately selected. Norman Shapiro was cast as Dr. Taylor, Alex Goodkin as Dr. Bance, and Eva Grubman as The Girl. As a distinct innovation, the class decided not to tollow the established tradition ot one three-act play, and in its stead, produced a series ot one-act plays in the torm ot a tournament. A whole week was devoted to the staging ot these plays, and the tickets were used as ballots to elect the starring play and cast. E Without a doubt, this unique tournament was a success. The audiences applauded, complimented, praised-lett, more than satisfied. WEENIES ON WEDNESDAY CASTS Madame Castenelli Mrs. Foster ,.,.A.,.... .............. Mr. Foster ...........,.,........ A S S H l S f O R Y By PETER RUBINOFF From various schools throughout Chicago and its vicinity, we entered Manley in the autumn of I933, amidst the chaos and confusion that was then in progress throughout the Chicago schools. Our June class of I936 is the first class to have had its complete Senior high school career at Manley. Some of our outstanding achievements were participation in the Manlegram, the student organ, through which students became acquainted with different phases and activities of school life: the formation of the Student Congress, which by the ioint efforts of the student body and faculty accomplished a great deal of beneficial work, some of which was the establishment of the school motto, Always Working, Never Shirking-Manley , the compiling of a student handbook, and the beautification of our grounds with trees. Clubs were soon organized, and on Friday mornings, one could go about the school and find the Sociology, Psychology, Dramatics, J. Y. L., and various other organizations in session. On different occasions we had the pleasure of having Dr. Harwood, the famous animal authority: Dr. Tarbell, the famous magician: the Davies Opera Singers, Lorado Taft, and Dudley Crafts Watson give performances in Manley Hall. From time to time, the different clubs also exhibited their talents. We were honored by having the Washington Oratorical Contest of Cook County held in Manley Hall. Manley was ably represented in this contest by a member of our class. With the inception of our senior year, an election was held to determine who our class officers would be. Precedence was broken when Ann Rubacha was elected presi- dent. Norman Shapiro was elected vice-president: Walter Glassner, treasurer: Louis Moses, secretary: and Alvin Kadish, proctor. The office of proctor was a new one, and it was the duty of this officer to arrange the assembly hall for the different meetings. ln addition to the many innovations set by former classes, passes were issued to seniors, which permitted them to go about their business after the fifth period without interruption. Room IIO was converted into a senior room where all senior business was transacted. The Dramatic Class was formed to present our class plays, and a Manley Memories Class was organized, whose business it was to publish our annual. To accord some honor to the students who received exceptionally good grades, a Manley Honor Society was formed. Besides developing the student mentally, intra-mural, and intermural teams were formed to develop him physically as well. Our iunior basketball team won the I935- l936 City Basketball Championship by virtue of being undefeated in a sixteen-game schedule. Swimming and track teams were also organized. ln the spring of l935, our chess team came in second in the city chess tournament. Graduation night will soon arrive. Attired in cap and gown, we will march upon the stage to receive our long coveted diploma. Qur happiness will be mingled with our sadness. We will be happy in the thought that our four years of hard work has not been in vain, and sad at the idea of leaving our beloved Alma Mater, where good counsel always prevailed, and where our store of knowledge could always be increased. We leave Manley, but its spirit will forever be enshrined in our hearts. Never has such an aggregation ot sharpshooting bas- Iceteers come out from the interior ot this institution to startle the prep sports world with a brand ot ball that rates it as one ot the topnotch tives ever to assemble. The blue-clad teams ot the past unfortunately never had such a collection ot stars. The present unbeatable combination ot the '35-'36 squad is presented. Harry Neiman Theodore Blum Max Mass, co-captain of the cagers, was one of the classiest floorrnen in the city. His coolness and collectiveness in the thick of battle made him invaluable as a leader during the campaign of the past year. Mass was one of the finest ball handlers ever to carry the blue and gold colors, an athlete whose all-around ability at the height of five feet two were important factors in the sixteen game victory chain which at the termination of the cage season resulted in Manley's annexation of its first city cham- pionship. David Bernstein, captain of the next year's squad, bids fair to continue the string of indefinite wins, with his fine qualities as an inspiration to the other members of the team. Duke was one of the most dependable men on the quintet during the past season. His long, beautifully arched heaves from mid-court allowed the blue and gold followers to breath a good deal easier as the Manley score mounted. Alvin Obby Kadish, who held down the center position, potted his last score in the Crane final. His brilliant ball handling and all-around floor play was by far pleasing. He was a regular for two years and failure to obtain any city-wide honors did not stunt his ability to handle a ball. When Al l.evin's days of athletic competition come to an end, one of the scrappiest and most spirited athletes will terminate a grand career as a blue and gold cager. On the basketball floor Al's fine defensive play was sensational. In Oscar Speck we have the dependable reserve who capably filled the gap left by Jack Shimrnelfarb, a past performer. Oscar proved a handy man to have around and got his share of buckets while in battle. Tracing the qualities and development of the following five inspires us to peer into the future. First, however, we again take into account the toll which graduation inevitabl takes. Four letter men, Max Mass, Alvin Kadish, Al Levin and Oscar Speck, who have worked in machine-like fashion during the past campaign, leave impor- tant gaps that must be filled if Manley intends to defend its title next season. ln conclusion let us say that this year's iunior team, under the skilled coaching of Harry Naiman, will not be forgotten. Its laudable record of sixteen victories and no defeats, together with its impressive achievements of totaling in sixteen games an average of 3I points per game to its opponents' l3, will stand as incentive to future teams. In addition not only have their accomplishments boosted all former tradition of the ponies, but it also will leave for future teams a name well distinguished. SENIOR BASKETBALL TEAM FIRST ROW: M. SENIORS CLIMAX SUCCESSFUL SEASON The Manley l-ligh senior basketball team, at the end ot the '35-'36 season, climaxed one ot the most enviable records ever attained by a senior squad at Manley. When the final gun sounded tor their last game it was found that they had won six league games while losing only two. They had such a strong combination ot star cagers combined in one team that the central section title was within Manley's grasp only to have the golden opportunity ot capturing their first section title vanish when the Blue and Gold sutiered severely with the graduation ot Smoler, Meyer and Cohen. y ln spite ot this handicap, the remainder ot the squad, heartened by the experi- enced play ot Keith and Probislcy, completed the additional three games ot an eight- game schedule with but one loss. With title hopes blasted, the curtain tall ot the season came at the Tilden game. Manley, playing their old rivals, put on a spirited battle, coming through in they closing minutes to tie the score and finally to capture the game by a three-point margin in overtime play. And so ended another basketball season tor the Manley seniors. True, they did not end up on top, but they did establish a nucleus tor the next team. Keith, Probislcy, Macohen, and Goldberg gained valuable experience which will aid them greatly next year. As tor Keith and Probisky, little experience is needed by either and with a little improvement in team play they can be expected to do great things along with next year's squad. ln conclusion, let it be said that we otier the squad ot next year our best wishes and our hopes tor the best ot luclc, and may they carry on in that same Manley spirit- win, lose, or draw, lceep on trying. May they go tar under the able coaching ot Coach Blum, and spread the tame ot Manley tar and wide. LIFE GUARD-BOYS FIRST ROW: M. Goldberg, B. Kadison, B. Glick, R. Scher, I. Slutzlcy, Captain: L. After a girl has won her letter she may win a chevron by earning 350 extra points. Each member purchases a Manley G. A.
