G Ci X N is I957 Otaknam Uses Mascot, Builds Cartoon Yearbook NCE upon a Time There were I3 Ii++Ie seniors who didn'T have anyThing To do TourTh hourg so They banded TogeTher and decided To publish a book called The OTAKNAM. This book was To be a record oT Their years aT MI-IS. Since There was a Teacher who also had noThing To do TourTh hour, These I3 seniors chose her as Their leader. This Teacher, Miss Mabel Lou Ahrens, accepTed The posiTion wiTh a Trown. Then The work began-making IayouTs, wriTing copy, cropping picTures, meeTing deadlines, copyreading, making money and answering ThaT darn phone. OTher Tedious Tasks were playing hangman, eaTing broken IiTesavers, sTyIing hair and gossiping. Gradually, Things began To Take shape, The compIeTed pages and secTions were rushed To The prinTers. For The remainder oT The year, The sTaTT anxiously awaiTed The arrival oT Their masTerpiece? AT lasT The books were delivered amidsT much caIamiTy and chaos. Seeing The pleased Tace oT each sTudenT as he received his OTak, The sTaTT TeIT well- rewarded Tor Their eTTorTs. Thus Miss Ahrens' original Trown changed To a broad smile. Tom Van EaTon was really speedy aT puTTing candy away. IT Took him all hour, buT Then he didn'T have anyThing else To do anyway. 20

Student Council Publishes Directory EADING a list ot projects tor the MHS Student Coun- cil again this year was the annual carnival. The main pur- pose ot the carnival was to raise money to sponsor our toreign exchange students. Other pro- jects included a student direc- tory, running the boolcstore, atter- game dances, selling popcorn and the exchange assembly with Al- bert Lea. The work was tor the betterment ot school lite and co- operation among the students. Ethics committee consisted ot seven members. lhey were Jim Chesser, Tom Luelcen, John Mulrooney and Sandra Diamond, seniors: Louise Nelson and Kent H. Smith, juniors: and Jane Blethen, sophomore. The committee helped to handle and solve the violations ot school rules by MHS students. I9
