Serves To all former faculty members of Mankato High who are now serving in the armed forces, we, the 1943 Otaknam Staff, dedicate this book. In this way we wish to show our appreciation to those men and women who are making it possible for schools such as ours to con- tinue in a free country. This year Mankato High students for the first time in their lives entered school in the midst of a war which in many ways has already altered their lives. Last fall hen they first passed through the halls of MHS, it was with a difierent purpose than when school ended peared en additional courses were put on the curric- d emphasis placed on those subjects which d repare the students for future service to the na- Q 1 n. To show how the students of Mankato High School e preced' g year. Evidences of this new purpose ap- f?M are adapting themselves to the war world in which they are now living, as well as to show how they are preparing themselves for a better world after the war - is the purpose of this book of the 1942-43 school year. XX NW X my it 4 , Confronted with abnormal condi- tions, the administration and faculty at MHS had new responsibilities when the doors of Mankato high reopened in September. Wartime brought changes. New courses appeared-radio, weld- ing, machines, aeronautics, electricity. Classroom activity constituted a pro- gram of basic training. mer faculty members brought a per- sonal aspect into the MHS panorama. Staff changes began soon after the year commenced. lt was double duty for those that remained. Red Cross work, first aid courses, gasoline and food ra- tioning, permitted little spare time for dinary pursuits. CANTEEN The school day without its many .ex- tra-curricular activities would be a drab one. Work and good natured banter 'in the newspaper ollice, behind the scenes of a class play, long hours of rehearsal for a musical performance, planning a radio program, debating, informal meetings-all of these we'll remember long after much of the classroom sub- ject matter has been forgotten. 1 But besides furnishing relaxation in a hectic school day, participation in these activities teaches us much - leadership, cooperation, learning to live together with others better. Many of us, too, will End our vocation through one of these activities. 'g,, -,,,,., i Qa tog-all l its R 4, 'gag :JA ' ml , 1 ,! .. '. Sixteen boys from this group made up the reporters chorus in the operetta. Before Christmas a group of sopho- more and a cappella singers caroled through the halls of the high school, Lincoln and Franklin junior high buildings. There is not a boy in the music room when Miss Klein's twenty-three hon- orary girls take over during sixth hour Wednesdays and Thursdays. To become a member of this glee club is one of the highest awards given to M. H. S. singers. The honorary girls played the part of Spanish dancers in Once in a Blue Moon, and sang for baccalaureate services May 23. Honorary Girls, Glee Club Row One: M. Lindsae, B. Bra zier, I. Miller, 0. The Hi-Y chapter has been active in plan- ning various student activities during the past year. Carrying out its part on the home front in order to help the war front, the school launched a physical fitness program in all of the gym classes. To build strong, healthy bodies became the set goal. The war also brought other changes. Tire and gas rationing necessitated re- strictions in team transportation for inter-school games. But in spite of the odds brought on by the war-time, the teams fought for Scarlet wins in every game and contest. Not even a war as extensive as this can take away from the real American boy or girl the love for a good game well played. yi' fl 1 lyp-s Q- ff. g c sg, . oo gill! fs-5 1 --.. f X X x 'KX -:.,:.:i' 1 -, .,., ., ,E g ' QA ef. Golf With Uncle Sam insisting a camera was more important to the war effort than a tennis racket, the Kato tennis team found its coach, Clarence Glasrud, wearing the army uniform last fall. But losing the coach wasn't all. Captain Bud Brown and Dave Philp were the only returning lettermcn-and no out- standing prospects were found. The war also dampened the golf activities. Track Kato finished second with 25 points in the second region track meet held last spring, on the Teachers college track. The war threatened to curtail the usual procedure of track activities this spring.
