This year the Purple team was coached by Mr. M.D. Boyles and Mr. Don Anderson. The White team was coached by Mr. Robert Herbig and Mr. Dave Carlson. The referees were Mr. Gary John- son, Mr. Ron Roster and Mr. Vernie Hendrix. The cheerleaders this year were Randy Peterson, Kevin Jensen, Clay Silsby, James McNabb, Shawn Gouldie, Todd Moore, and Jeff Clark. Vicki Logan and Lori Becker dressed up as clowns and ran around the field grabbing the ball, heckling the cheerleaders, and teasing the referees and coaches. The ending score Burkhart, Lori Becker. The girls decorated the commons area. Decorations incuded a big Christmas tree in the mid- dle of the floor. PHRED provided the music. The FHA girls took their trip on April 22, 1980. This year the girls went to Topeka. They visited the Capital Building, the Historical Society, and they ex- plored the downtown area. They visited the Men- ninger Clinic and the Governor's Mansion before re- turning home. 2 THE HOMES OF TOMORROW The Mr. FHA Contest was held on April 25, 1980. The four contestants were Danny Hesket— senior, Kevin Groves—junior, Brian Badger— sophomore and John Owen—freshman. Events included setting a cover, peeling and coring an apple, decorating cookies, and sewing on a but- ton. This year's winner was Brian Badger with Danny Hesket coming in second. The Mankato Chapter FFA Sweetheart Contest was held on August 31, 1979 at MHS. Fourteen girls took the written test to determine the six finalists. Once the six were selected they completed in several contests. The finalists were: Julie Malcom, These finalists competed in watermel- on eating, greased pig catching, steel post driving, and board sawing which was topped off with driving a three wheeled-cycle through an obstacle course. The competition concluded with the crowning of the new Sweet- heart for 1980-81, Sherri Gardner. We had two new ad- ditions to the coaching staff, which were Coach Larry Moore and Coach Ron Koster. There were thirty mem- bers on the squad this year. The fi- nal performance was a show with the junior high band. K-State Band Day was another day to remem- ber. The band's concert season was highlighted by per- forming at the music festivals.
