For the teams and the coaches basketball is a gruelling sport. It means practicing long hours, learning to be a good sport, taking the bruising and battering that comes with the no-contact game, and bouncing back from a loss to win the next one. But for the school, the Pep Club, and fans it is also hectic and nerve wracking. It means that every Tues- day and Friday one must hurry and scurry to get to the game or to the bus on time, often skipping supper in the process. It means being jostled for endless miles on a school bus. It means wearing a Pep Club uniform so often it becomes shapeless and threadbare. It means continued show of spirit even when the team is many points behind. And at MHS it means keeping your mouth shut and smiling sweetly even when you think you've been robbed! 53 FRESHMAN ROSTER: David Wame, Marshall Hanson, A.C. Fall, Jerry Harder, Gary David, Roger Rightmeier, Mike Herrmann, Mark Hoard, David Ortman. COACHES-Bob Neel, Sam Porter. 54 The '72-73 Cougars showed themselves to be a better-than-average tournament team. In the NKL tournament MHS won third place. In the first round of play, MHS defeated Minneapolis 61-57; in the semifinals the Cougars were subdued by Belleville 66-53. For third place the Cougars beat Smith Center 74-56. The four-team District tournament at Smith Center established the Cougars in the championship position. In the first round MHS defeated Beloit 71-59. They then went on to beat Smith Center 60-50 for the title. In the Regional tournament held at Washington, however, the Cougars' luck ran out about halfway through the tournament. In the first round play MHS defeated Centralia 73-69 in three overtime periods. The second round saw Belleville the winner over Mankato 71-54. Mankato then played Washington for the third place, and lost 55-60. Boys’ Track TRACK ROSTER: Coach: Vemie Hendrix, Steve Bad- ger, A.C.
