As the COUGAR '72 cover design suggests the illusion of reflection, so we hope this yearbook will reflect the 1971-72 school year. Since Mankato celebrated its Centennial Year in 1972, we also hope that COUGAR '72 reflects the progress of education in the past 100 years. GAYE ANDERSON, instructor Students in Mrs. Munsey's foreign language classes not only learn to read and to speak in Spanish and French, but they also lean something of the history and color of the country whose language they are learning. Posters, art cen- ters, models, and mem- orabilia emphasize the culture of these nations. Mrs. Genevieve Munsey reigns alone over the Foreign Language de- partment with its cub- byholes for sound and electronic equipment. Approximately forty students, from grades seven through twelve, attend classes in this room daily. Spanish and French classes are offered from elemen- tary to advanced courses. 35 Fifty-eight students were enrolled in the Business De- partment. Courses taught were bookkeeping, shorthand, and typing I and II. MRS. MYRA LANDIS was the instructor. 36 Approximately one hundred students were enrolled in math classes taught by Miss Adelaide Regnier, Dennis Lauritzen and Gerald Elwood. Courses offered were General Math, Algebra I and II, Geome- try, and Senior Math. Nearly sixty students were instructed by Jackson McGrew in science classes. Courses offered were Botany, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Physics. Pictures show Biology students peering into microscopes for notebook drawing; Chemistry students mixing a concoction (hopefully not combustible); Miss Regnier's Geometry class, a student in Senior Math receiving individual help; and a light moment in Biology. 37 Eight separate courses were offered to the 184 students enrolled in the English department: English I, II, III, IV, Speech, Debate (new this year), Journalism and College Prepara- tory English. Pictures show Mrs. Mlynar's Journalism class (also the yearbook staff); Mrs. McColey's freshman English class; and a debate panel in lively discussion. 38 The Social Science department offered six courses to 113 MHS students: American History, American Govern- ment, World History, Current Affairs, Psychology, and Sociology. Classes were taught by Bob Robinson and Vernie Hendrix. Pictures show Mr. Robinson's world History class, Mr. Hendrix's enjoying reading his lesson, and Mr. Hendrix proving a point to a couple of doubtful students. 39 40 41 42 Approximately 100 junior and senior high students were enrolled in shop classes. GERALD ELWOOD taught Industrial Arts. DAVID BOTHWELL taught Vocational Agriculture. 43 COUGARETTE COUNCIL Jayne Bemeking Barbara Blair Carole Balir Lynette Bradrick Becky Diamond Brenda Huntsinger Susan Murray Andra Newell Debbie Noble Terry Robinson Susan Rourke Sue Ann Weaverling Carrie Weltmer Seniors: Gayle Berry Barbara Blair Jennifer Howland Brenda Huntsinger Jo Ann Kitts Joyce Love Andra Newell Debbie Noble Trela Rafferty Terry Robinson Mary Jane Smith Roberta Smith Carrie Weltmer 46 Juniors: Jayne Berneking Carole Blair Sherry Esslinger Diane Grout Marilyn Hamilton Lynette Lehrling Susan Murray Lynn Newell Paula Rightmeier Barbara Roe Susan Rourke Sophomores: Marla Berg Deidra Blecha Carol Bohnert Denise Diamond Mickie Hendrix Jeanette Hiltgen Jeanine Hiltgen Mary Jensen Debbie Munsey Kathy Neilson Terri Newell Susan Pierce Cheryl Pletcher Ramona Rehmert Cathy Taska Judy Tyler Vicky Tyler Sue Ann Weaverling Freshmen: Rhonda Andrews Judy Badger Lynette Bradrick Katrina Calcote Denise Dahl Rebecca Diamond Linda Eilert Loreita Esslinger Brenda Fullerton Susan Harder Marilyn Hulbert Myrna Imler Marta Leonard Paula McNabb Camilla Meyer Lisa Nelson Coleen Pletcher Kathy Rourke Mary Rothchild Anna Smith Patti Seals Cindy Studer Vickie Spiegel Christie Turner Barbara Wiley SIX CHEERLEADERS were elected by the the MHS student body to serve during the 1971-72 school term.
