I For every thing there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to harvest;.. . A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to seek, and a time to lose; A time to keep, and time to cast away; ... A time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time for war, and a time for peace; What gain has the worker from his toil? JEANIE BLAIR The service personnel are seldom given recognition, but it is they who keep the wheels oiled so that the educational ma- chine functions. The secretary to the superintendent is Mrs. Sondra Decker who has held this posi- tion for two years. Mrs. Berenita Me Elroy is secretary to the junior high and grade school principal. She has worked in these schools for six years. Mrs. Jeanie Blair is high school secre- tary and has been in this position for two years. Mrs. Blair is peace maker, co-ordi- nator, go-between, and confidant, to name a few of her many roles. Mankato schools have closed lunch hours so the cooks who reign in the cafe- terias are indispensable. Mrs. Edith Love and Mrs. Charlotte Murray prepare meals for approximately 165 people each day. Mrs. Thelma Murray, Mrs. Eva Wiley, and Mrs. Freeda Seals feed approximately 270 daily at the grade school and junior high. 10 MRS. BERENITA McELROY MRS. EDITH LOVE MRS. THELMA FREEMAN MRS. Thermo- stats would stick; latrines would re- mained plugged up; air conditions would dispense warm air; feet of students would stick forever to grimy floors. But MHS custodians spend long hours to prevent such catastrophes. HENRY DIAMOND, head custodian Hank Diamond, head custodian, has kept U.D. 278 school plants in operation for 15 years. Howard Rathburn has maintained the grade school building for 5 years. Bob Monro (not pictured) has serviced the high school building for 8 1 2 years. Forrest Dempsey is in his first year at the high school, having come to Mankato from a similar position in Formoso during the time that school was in operation. Basic skills in painting, drawing and design are learned in the beginning courses. Creative projects to come from these skills are varied, ranging from three dimensional objects to utility signs and posters for school use. The Art Department holds various small exhi- bits during the year for such special occasions as club meetings and con- ventions. But the major exhibit occurs at the end of the year when all pro- jects are on view at the Home Economics-Indus- trial Arts-Art Show. Cheryl Hall views some of the various projects on display at the Annual Spring Art Exhibit. Jim Howell admires some of the fine sculpture pieces made by ceramics students. Ceramics is a course new to the Art department this year. Thirteen students are enrolled. The first semester is spent in learning coil, slab, pinch pot, and wheel techniques. The second semester each student creates from his own imagination. Creative projects have included sculptured heads, tea sets, matching bowl sets, pots and vases, wind chimes, and abstract structures. 30 31 Language and Business Five courses—Typing I and II, Bookkeeping, Business Manage- ment, and Shorthand — comprise the curriculum of the Business de- partment. Mrs. Myra Landis is the teacher of these courses; approxi- mately seventy-five students are enrolled. Mrs. Genevieve Munsey has fifty-five students in the Foreign Language department; fifteen of these are junior high stu- dents. This year French I, II, and III; Spanish I and II are taught. Whenever there is a need advanced courses in both languages are offered to individual students. 32 English MHS English department offers eight units in its curriculum. Mrs. Maxine Mc- Coley teaches English I and II, Speech and Drama. Mrs. Carol Mlynar teaches English III and IV, Journalism and College Prep. Debate and Journalism and new to the de- partment this year. Approximately 220 students pass through this department daily. Obviously many are enrolled in more than one course. Photo by McElroy Mrs. Mlynar and Susan puzzle over a lay-out. Would you believe a quiet moment in English IV? Mary Jane Smith, JoAnn Kitts, Keith Roe, and Jennifer Howland represent Speech class in district festival. Journalism ad salesmen and business man- agers are busy in the library. 33 Home Economics Boys' Home Ec. Class. Mrs. Dodd reigns over a Home Economics department of seventy-six students. Five courses make up the curriculum: Clothing, Foods, Junior Home Economics, Senior Home Economics, and Boys' Home Economics. Nineteen boys are enrolled in the boys' class. Mrs. Dodd and Junior Home Ec. 34 Shop 36 David Bothwell and Gerald Elwood share a fenced-in kingdom of their own. Shop classes meet in a building adjacent to die high school. One hun- dred thirty students meet in the department daily; of them twenty-seven are from the junior high. Areas of learning include welding, power mechanics, woodworking, leatherwork, plastics, and home maintenance. Approximately forty-five other students study Mechanical Drawing and Driver Training. Robert Mlynar and Don Anderson are instructors for these courses. 37 Physical Education Bob Robinson puts seventy-three Physical Education students through their paces everyday. Fifty-six boys and seventeen girls perspire through a variety of activities. New equipment added this year was a trampoline and parallel bars. 38 Social Science Approximately one hundred twenty students trudge daily in and out of the doors of Social Science classes. Besides making up the cheering section at athletic events, Cougarettes sponsor Homecoming activities and Basketball Sweetheart. An innovation this year was Parents' Night during football season. Cougarettes are responsible for the booster slogans and signs which enliven the corridors and Commons; they sponsor pep assemblies and prepare the hoop for basketball games. Because buses provide transportation, attend- ance and participation among club members is nearly 100%. Cougarettes adopted a revised constitution this year. Major changes were in uniform and method of handling discipline cases. A Council was formed to act as a representative governing body and to make recommendations to the sponsor on matters of discipline. The Council is comprised of officers, cheerleaders and at-large- representatives. Zadina, R. Neilson. The Mankato chapter of F. F. A. is one of about 10, 000 local chapters. National enrollment is about 454, 000; Mankato chapter numbers 42. Any boy or girl between the ages of fourteen and twenty-one who has been or is presently enrolled in Voca- tional Agriculture is elegible for membership in F. F. A. The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America is the development of competent and aggressive rural leadership, cooperation, and citizenship. The Mankato F. F. A. chapter has an annual parent-son banquet to recognize those persons who do an out- standing job in vocational agriculture. In the summer officers of the chapter attend State F. F. A. camp and here they improve their leadership skills. During the school year the members attend agriculture contests and compete with boys from other schools. 59 The ivy that clings to the wall Here on the far side of time, We're near the end of the line. Our days have grown withered and small, Like the ivy that clings to the wall. Off on the long road to home, We're meant to go it alone. Still, there are times we recall, The ivy that clings to the wall. We early ran from the safety of school-yards, In search of a better, more beautiful world One day we turned in the road To find our new world was all in our mind. Some other season, perhaps, Pretty girls sat on our laps. The seasons change after all, Like the ivy that clings to the wall, The ivy that clings to the wall. — Rod McKuen Copyright 1969 by Ecitions Chanson Co. and Twentieth Century Music Corp. 60 40 Track BACK ROW: Coach Hendrix, K. Winning the Regional earned the Cougars a spot in the State 2-A Tournament in Hutch- inson. Unfortunately the Cougars were unable to hold an exceptionally tall Atwood team, losing 38-41 in the first round of play. MHS has not provided many State Tourna- ment teams, only three in fact. In 1943 a Cougar team won the State Championship; in 1944 they were defeated in the semi-finals. STARTING 5-Ron Simon, Rodney Hancock, Steve Dodd Mike Simon, Shan Mlynar. Junior and Senior Plays ERASMUS WITH FRECKLES Erasmus is a very bright four- teen year old boy who lives with his father, a college professor of poetry, on a beached ferry boat. The father is a non-conformist and is deter- mined that his children shall be likewise. When Erasmus discovers an error on a computer-made finincial state- ment of the Bank of America, trouble begins. Everyone wants to exploit Erasmus' intelligence. To prevent such exploitation the family pulls up anchor and sails to France. But all ends well and the family re- turns to normal with a new step- mother besides. Mrs. McCarthy also has a col- lection of uncut diamonds which disappears from her safe. Miss Deering, reporter, persuades Mrs. McCarthy to let her work on solv- ing the crime before the matter is turned over to the police. Suspicion shifts from one board- er to another before the surprising solution is arrived at. 78 Cougar Casuals 79 Homecoming 1970 HOMECOMING ROYALTY: Mike Simon, Sarah Jane Russell, Rodney Hancock, Diane Rourke, Susan Kier.
