world peace. His unprecedented, one-day visit in the U.S. was the culmination of plans by men of all faiths. 7 After Surgery— President Johnson was photographed in a reclining chair at Bethcsda Naval Hospital the day after his gall bladder op- eration on October 8. He conducted the work of his office from his hospital room and his Texas ranch during his recuperation. 8 Proud Student—Charles Craig, 19-year-old freshman at Iowa uni- versity, demonstrated his criticism of draft-card burning incidents by displaying his draft card on his jacket with the note: “I'm a draft card carrying American and proud of it.” Our role in the Vietnamese war sparked the incidents. 9 Blackout- The glittering metropolis of New York City was thrust into darkness on November 9 by a massive power failure affecting hundreds of miles along the eastern seaboard. City residents and commuters were stranded in offices, railroad and subway stations for hours before service was restored. The crippling condition was caused by a faulty relay at a Canadian generating station near Niagara Falls. 10 New Ambassador—Arthur Goldberg was named U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations by the President after the death of Ambassa- dor Adlai Stevenson on July 14 in London. Goldberg was secretary of labor under President Kennedy and a U.S. Supreme Court Justice when named to the U.N. post. 1 1 Startling Fashions— Bold and contrasting blocks of color were the youthful fashion note of 1965. The eye-catching designs even ex- tended the length of campus stockings worn with the costumes. 12 Royalty on Tour— Princess Margaret and her husband, Lord Snowdon, arrived in New York on November 4 for a whirlwind tour of the U.S. During their visit, they took time out for fun-filled activi- ties such as a ride on a cable car in Frisco and gala parties in Holly- wood and the nation's capital. Our Board of Education helps to promote community understanding by acting as a liaison between school and community. With responsibility to meet and hard work to do, our Board of Education is behind the policies that help to form the image of Mankato High School. As of the coming school year, our school will become Unified District 278. Three additional board members have been elected to represent the new area. These board members will officially take office on July 1, 1966. We are very gratetul to these men for giving their time and effort to our school system. They give to us the opportunity for a better education. STUDENT COUNCIL Through the Student Council, all students have had an active voice in the government of M.H.S. This year the council was a member of the National Association of Student Councils. 1:30, was made up of class and organization representatives. The council was in charge of all school elections and assemblies. Some of the more important assemblies were in conjunction with summer camps and workshops, Armistice Day, Christmas, sportsmanship, and American Heritage Month. In the fall Mr. Roberts took four members to a Leadership Conference in Hays. The theme of the Council's all-school party was Where the Action Is. All of those who attended were computer-matched to one or more persons from the student body. Some other projects include selling class pins, keeping the entire student body better informed, hosting the A.C.T. Tests, and pur- chasing another podium. Mike Rourke was elected to attend tne Stu- dent Council Workshop at Hays during the summer. Throughout the academic year they teach us by the use of term papers, outside reading and just plain class work. Education is their main objective and it is centered around the student himself They work long and tirelessly preparing us for the day to day life, helping the student on his way to becoming a better citizen. 8 NANCY JON BARTHOLOMEW LAQUITA JOYCE CROUCH JAMES MERTON FREEMAN CAROLYN SUE CADY MARIE ANNETTE DEWEY DAVID LYNN FULLERTON GAIL LEE BADGER RONALD WAYNE CLEGG RONALD GUY FRAASS 10 JANIS ELAYNE FULLERTON JEAN ANN GUMM MARLA ANN ISAAC KAREN SUE GARMAN OALGA TEHL HANSON STEVEN RAY KALE JERRY ELLSWORTH GROUT ROBERT CLARK HOWLAND JR. After the death of her parents she was forced to raise her younger brother and sisters. Because of financial and parental responsi- bilities, Cynthia and her fiance were unable to marry. Aunt Agatha, who lived with them, led an unendless search for another husband. The three brats themselves, Hank, Babs, and Tess tried every way possible to influence Agatha’s decision. As each practice rolled by the team showed signs of improvement, and by the end of the season they had finished third in the Solomon Valley league. This was the best season a Cougar team has had for some years. Three senior boys were named to this years Solomon Valley All-League teem. They were Duane Rhea, defensive guard, Vance Tyrell, offensive tackle, and John Waldron, defensive linebacker. These boys showed qualities of leadership, determination, and spirit. 45 MHS ROYALTY ATTENDANTS Duane Rhea Doyle Rothchild Nancy Bartholomew Patricia Powell BASKETBALL 1965—1966 John Waldron Senior Forward Melvin Kitts Junior Center John Clegg Junior Guard Jerry Grout Senior Guard Mike Rourke Junior Forward Vance Tyrell Senior Forward Robert Howland Senior Guard Coach Don Miskimon SECOND ROW: Coach Anderson, J. A TEAM BASKETBALL The Cougar team had a good season this year, having finished third in the SVAL with an 8-4 league record and a 13-7 overall record. Last Fall, the Cougars were predicted to win about five games. Coach Miskimon feels that hard work and determination, plus a good mental attitude on the part of the team, has given us a much better record. In their first game with undefeated Glasco, the Cougars went down only in an overtime struggle. Three other tight games were lost by a total of five points, while one game was won by 61 points. Two of the starters, forward John Waldron and guard Mike Rourke, were selected as first team members of the all-league team. Center, Melvin Kitts was on the all-league’s second f ive. Jeannette Grout SENIOR TRIP It was a cold, wet and windy night when we began, but our spirits were high. By car, train, and bus the Seniors arrived at the Baker Hotel in Dallas, Texas, on April 15, 1966. After unpacking we had free time to get orientated, before eating supper at the Picadilly and attending The Silencer”. Saturday was spent out to the State Fair Park, the largest permanent park grounds in the United States. Among the interesting sights viewed were the Wax Museum, Hall of State, Aquarium, Science Museum, and don't forget the midwayI Our night on the town” was at The Pit Club”, a private teenage club located in the Bronco Bowl. Complete with atmosphere and the Pitmen , we danced the night away. Sunday being Easter Sunday, we all attended church. In the afternoon we boardered our chartered bus for a scenerama tour. The most historic sight being that of the assasination of President Kennedy. At fifty-two stories up, Dallas looks quite different, as we all agreeded, from the First National Bank Building. Also on Monday we took an educational tour through Borden's dairy, complete with samples. Then it was, pack those bags, and we were off for an evening in Fort Worth, before hoping the train to Herrington. At 5:15 A.M., the conductor called Herrington , and we awoke from our dream . We disembarked and were homeward bound. We reached school just as the bells were ringing, but now for us. We had one more day to catch up on our sleep. A debt of thanks to our sponsors, Mr. and Mrs. Freeman, Soash, and Waldron. That was the weekend that was. Michelle Taska was the recipient of the State Exchange Bank Scholarship, Class Night. This is the first year that the scholarship has been awarded. These Seniors also received Scho- larships latter in the spring. Sandra Wilson Robert Howland Music Scholarship Kansas State University Bethany College John Waldron Kansas State University Janis Fullerton and Doyle Rothchild toured Washington D.C., New York and Chicago for one week over Easter va- cation. They went by train with 700 other high school students and spon- sors from all over the state. Their educational tour brought history to life as they viewed the Capitol, Statue of Liberty, Arlington Cemetary, and many, many more sights. They can both be quoted as saying that it was a fabulous trip. HONOR STUDENTS Ronald Guy Fraass CLASS POEM Three Days In May by Ron Fraass And what is so rare as three days in May When all we Seniors shall go away To live our lives beyond the -school; For we worked 12 years under teacher’s rule. Jerry Ellsworth Grout Robert Clark Howland, Jr. Steven Ray Kale Donna Marie Logan John Arthur Waldron, Jr. For most of us it began at six, When the teachers taught us to work with sticks. And now that we are seventeen, We feel we’re ready to make the scene. HONORS Now we’ll go into the world well prepared or ill But we know that of high school we've had our fill And some will go to college and some will go to work But because we've always been well taught, our duties we won't shirk. YEARBOOK STAFF wins We know how much you'll miss us, and wish for our return But no matter how you ask us, we've had twelve years to learn And you’ll agree that these long years are enough for any class And since we now are graduates, it’s time to go at last. BIG £ AWARD 69 STYLE SHOW On May 18, 1966, at 8:00 P.M., Pierre’s House of Fashion opened it’s doors to reveal the many lovely creations, made by the freshman, junior, and senior home economics classes this year. The scene was on 5th Avenue in New York City, with the city’s famous skyline in the background. Carolyn LeClair narrated the script as Sandra Wilson played background music. ”11 etait magnif ique.’ ” STUDENT COUNCIL A night meeting was the scene of the Candlelight Student Council Installation. New members for the coming year were guests of this year's council. New officers; Mike Rourke, President, Cindy Halstead, Secretary-Treasurer, Dick Munsey, Vice-President, and the new members took an oath of office. It was an in- spirational service for the new and a memory for the old, as the year drew to a close. Afterwards a fare- well party was held. KAYETTES A combination of happiness and sadness describes the Kayette Senior Farewell. Each senior Kayette received a gift and symbolic diploma from the club which brought back wonderful memories of four years in a truly worthwhile organization. SNAPS World News—1965 1 Humanitarian Dies—Dr. Albert Schweitzer died in September at Lambarcne, his primitive hospital at the African jungle outpost of Gabon. The famed physician, who reached his 90th birthday in January, worked most of his life to relieve the suffering of jungle natives. 2 Queen Speaks—Queen Elizabeth II dedicated the John F. Kennedy memorial at Runnymede, England on May 14. Mrs. Kennedy is seated to the left and Prince Philip to the right of the queen. Carolyn Kennedy is seated between the queen and her mother, and Sen. Robert Kennedy stands behind Mrs. Kennedy. 3 Miss Universe—The reigning queen of beauty in the universe dur- ing the year was a representative from Thailand. 4 Bosch Returns—Former Dominican Republic President Juan Bosch was vehement in his address at a rally September 25, shortly after his return to Santo Domingo. 5 Wins m Run-Off— Charles deGaulle polled 55.2 per cent of the vote in a run-off election against Francois Mitterrandon December 19. The vote gave DeGaulle the French presidency for another 7 years, but the strength of the Socialist-Communistic candidate corroded the popularity of the 71-year-old president.. 6 Agrees to Cease-Fire—Pakistani Foreign Minister Zulfikar Bhutto (right) agreed in the U.N. Security Council on September 22 to ac- cept the Council’s cease-fire order in the undeclared war between Pakistan and India. Pakistan's announcement came after India had agreed to the order. 7 Abortive Coup Fails—Indonesian President Sukarno was toppled from power for a brief 20 hours last fall. He gestured at a cabinet meeting on October 6 during his first public appearance after the coup, which seriously shook his one-man rule. 8 Soviet Winner— Russian author Mikhail Sholokhov was vacationing in the Ural region on October 18 when he heard he had been awarded the 1965 Nobel Prize for Literature. The December award ceremony was held in Stockholm. 9 Return to Desolation Hundreds of families returned to the wreckage of their homes, destroyed by eruption of Taal volcano, south of Ma- nila, on September 28. Volcanic ash covered a six-mile-square area. The death toll was estimated at 500. I 0 Price of War—The number of casualties increased as the U.S. stepped up its military action in Vietnam. American advisors took part in many helicopter missions, carrying wounded soldiers, both Vietnamese and American, to copters on makeshift litters for evac- uation to Saigon. II Reason to Celebrate—Chancellor Ludwig Erhard of West Germany waved to a cheering crowd in Bonn after his Christian Democrats surged to victory in the September 19 parliamentary elections. Mayor Willy Brandt’s Social Democrats sufTered defeat in the voting. 12 Colonial Rule Shaken— Rhodesian Premier Ian Smith broadcast a proclamation of sovereign independence for Rhodesia on November 11. The split from Britain was made in an attempt to insure a white minority rule of the African colony. It was the first such move against Britain since the American colonies broke away in 1776. Britain re- taliated swiftly and took the problem to the U.N. Security Council, which asked all nations to enforce an oil embargo against the Afri- can colony. -X.
