SOLOISTS and ENSEMBLES The Mankato High School Music Department brought honor to our school several times this year. Both soloists and ensembles earned l’s” at the District Music Festi- val in Concordia which enabled them to attend state-wide competi- tion at Emporia State Teachers College. Sandra Wilson (piano) and Bob Shirley (trumpet), Cheryl Halstead (voice), the Clarinet Quartet, and the Girls Sextet attended the con- test at Emporia. Cheryl and Sandy received ”1 ratings while the re- maining musicians received ”3’s”. Other students competed at the District Contest. Those receiving 2’s were Elaine Kale (saxophone) Vance Tyrell (saxophone), Marla Isaac (clarinet and voice), Dorian Meyer (saxophone), Marie Dewey (tuba), Joyce Lange (voice), Cindy Halstead (voice), Deanne Coffman (voice). Jim Decker (drums) and Jeannette Grout (saxophone) were given a rating of 3 . Early in the school year Jim Decker organized a combo known as ’’The Cougar Claws”. Jim played the drums, Bob Shirley on the trumpet, Dorian Meyer on the sax,Ed Dunstan on trombone, and Vance Tyrell on sax. Playing the very latest hits this group performed for the Stu- dent Council Valentine Party. Of course they were a tremendous suc- cess 1 We are proud to mention that at District Contest the Mankato High School Band was given a ”2” and the Mankato Girls Glee Club received a 1 . The groups were directed by Miss Dorothy Libben and Mrs. Kaye Strieker respect- ively. 28

David, Sondra Reed, Brenda Morris, Jane Bowersox Kayet tes The school year 1964-1965 was busy for the Kayettes. On Kayette Sunday, October 25, the girls at- tended the Assembly of God Church. A hilarious Powder-Puff Foot- ball game, November 10, between the Senior-Sophomore girls and the Junior-Freshman girls resulted in a scoreless tie, The proceeds went to the Cerebral Palsy Fund. Theme of the Father-Daughter Banquet, November 19, was African Safari.” Miss Libben showed her African Safari slides. The Kayette Board had a pot- luck supper and a gift exchange on December 15 at Jane Kier's Home. The annual Kayette unit con- ference was held at Delphos, March 9. Every girl pitched in to work on the Kayette Bazaar. The date was March 13. During the second semester, a smile campaign, with a different smile sign each day, was begun.
