m iiuww Hir THE 1964 MANKATOAN Standing proudly on guard above the doors of Mankato High School, the Cougar has watched the events of another school year; he has seen the athletes, the scholars, their anticipation, their anxiety, their triumphs , their disap- pointments, their successes, and their failures. From that first hectic moment of enrollment to the triumphant cap and gown clad entry at commencement, the Cougar has been aware of each student who entered these halls of learning. He has shown great interest in the multitude of high school activities; at games he has lustily cheered the Cougars; in the classroom he has offered patient assist- ance; and to the staff he has given co-opera- tion. 1963-64 has seen Mr. Paul Roberts, science teacher, take on the duties of principal. The impressive appearance of the halls and classrooms of MHS can be partially accredited to Mr. Roberts, and he tries to maintain this neatness in spite of an occasional lackadai- sical student’s attitude. Heading the educational activities are the three members of the board of education. They have organized a transportation system for our enlarging enrollment. Looking toward future reorganization, these men have in- creased the faculty, expanded the athletic program, introduced foreign languages, and expanded and remodeled the office, to provide for the students of MHS the best of educa- tional opportunities. The Mother-Daughter Banquet, fea- turing In a Dutch Garden as the theme, was held in November. Candy sales and concessions were fund-raising projects. School, community, and world service projects included improvements for the school, cleaning the park near the school and contributions to worthy causes. Regional conference at Norton was atten- ded by our three delegates and the entire club went to Lebanon for the unit con- ference. In December the board had a Christmas supper and gift exchange. February saw the club writing letters to their heartsisters and giving a gift at the end of the week. In the Spring we chose delegates to Kayette camp at Rock Springs Ranch. Kayette Week is enjoyed by all girls. Each day included some- thing different-school service, dress-up day, and one day to wear something un- usual. After a 34 game losing streak, the Mankato Cougars posted 3 victories for the year, two of which were league wins. The Mankato B team had a successful season. They were undefeated after win- ning three games. Most of these boys will probably be seeing action on next year's A squad. The Cougars were coached by two new- comers, Robert Harris, head coach, and Gary Rogers, assistant coach. Jim Powell, a junior who played tackle, made the all star team of the Solomon Valley League 33 ROYALTY GORDON MURRAY BETTY MOON On a perfect fall evening the Cougar blinked as flash bulbs went off and a throng of Mankatoans crowded to see the 1963-64 Homecoming at MHS. Parents, teachers, alumni, and the student body were out Oct- ober 11 for just one thing----- HOMECOMING. The ceremony began as the queen candidates, waving hap- pily to the crowds, circled the field in an open car driv- en by Michael Reager. Marching between two rows of football players to the front of MHS stands, the king Gordon Murray escorted the queen Betty Moon followed by the attending couples Lynn Scarrow, Sharon Loomis, Dennis Schrock and Linda Dewey. Susan Judy, Andrea Wilson, Teresa Graham and Kathy Clay- camp crowned the boys who in turn crowned the girls. From their dias decorated with giant playing cards the Royalty reigned over a victorious game. After the game a dance in honor of the Royalty completed a very successful Homecoming. 34 ROYALTY Dance after the victory 35 Preparation for the 11th Watching the game BASKETBALL Rodger Berg Dennis Schrock Lynn Scarrow Gordon Murray Delmer Rothchild Eddie Dunstan Jim Powell 36 John Hunter Greg Price Don Frye Bob Shirley BASKETBALL Back row: Stu. He had high ideals per- taining to the good of our country and he fought for them. He wanted social and eco- nomic well-being for everyone in our country and in the world. He was a man who tried; only time will show whether or not he suc- ceeded. WE IN THIS COUNTRY, IN THIS GENERATION, ARE—BY DESTINY RATHER THAN CHOICE—THE WATCHMEN ON THE WALLS OF WORLD FREEDOM. WE ASK, THEREFORE, THAT WE MAY BE WORTHY OF OUR POWER AND RESPONSIBILITY—THAT WE MAY EXERCISE OUR STRENGTH WITH WISDOM AND RESTRAINT--AND THAT WE MAY ACHIEVE IN OUR TIME AND FOR ALL TIME THE ANCIENT VISION OF PEACE ON EARTH, GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN.
