During football season the marching band practiced 3 days a week and gave marching exhibitions at the half of home games. The outstanding event of the year was the Christmas Concert given December 21, 1950. The band conducted a series of concerts throughout the year; during the winter they also played at the home basketball games. The band participated in the Comity Festival given in the spring, March 30 and 31, 1951. In the following years of grade school we were joined by Bonnie Guffin, Jordan Olson, Joe Platt, Wayne Hedden, Cecelia Bunch, and Ila Selvage. Coming to the high school building for Junior High we were joined by Rose Broyles, Jack Bradrick, Don Freeman, Rose Zadina, Jack Blair, and Don Megill. Some of the important events of our Junior High days were our basketball team's taking first in the County Tournament, our 3-1 act plays, and our sneak trip to Topeka in May. New members to our class as Freshmen were Garold Badger, Jerald Everson, Ilaree Groves, JoAnn Crouch, Evamae Monasmith, Clarabelle Vader and Duane Wiley. After our initiation when we pushed pennies across the gym floor with our noses, wore our clothes wrong side out, carried dolls, and wore signs, we became full fledged members of Mankato High School. No new members joined until our Junior year where we gained Anne Shackleton and Shirley Mason and lost Dorothy Carter. Beginning our Senior year we gained no new students, but lost Joe Platt. During our Senior year many members of our class held positions of leadership in the organizati ns of Mankato High School. This is the day we have longed for. The climax of twelve long years, The day each eager senior In a cap and gown appears. As our diplomas are handed us And hand shakes are our good bye We'll clear the halls of M.H.S. With one last parting sigh. Then we look into the future To what is held in store We'll start a new and different life When we pass through the door. Class of 51 Holds Reunion Special to Jewell County Record by Mary Holmes, Associated Press Reporter for the New York Times. Edgar Joe Warner, President of the Class of '51, was host to his class at his estate on Kaiioolawe Island, invited his classmates to his home for a reunion at the time of the Annual Pineapple Festival. Arriving on an ocean liner were the following people; Barbara Nichols, now head nurse of the Asbuxy Hospital in’ Salina Kansas: Ilaree Groves, California Rodeo Queen and own- er of a palomino ranch; Captain Don Freeman of the United States Army on leave from his base at Honululu; Don Megill youngest President in U. S. history, arrived with Wayne Hedden, his secret service man and Bonnie Guffin, his private secretary. Rose Marie Zadina and Shirley Mason,- nurses in the New York Polio Clinic for Children; Duane Wiley, head of the Kansas State Agricultural Department; Joan McElroy, Sam Spade's private secretary and assistant investigator. A T.W.A. Airliner which landed on Edgar Joe's front lawn brought its hostess, JoAnn Crouch; and Betty Hancock, a Holly- wood dress designer for the M.G.M. studios; Jack Blair, head track coach at the University of Kans-s; Jack Bradrick, owner and auctioneer of the Mankato Sales Company now one of the largest in the United States. Cecelia Bunch Reystead, Cogie Dillman Bradrick, and Murray Smith who recently returned to the United States from Paris where the National Guards are stationed, were also among the passengers. A few hours later another plane arrived bringing Clara- belle Vader, Commerce teacher at Washburn State College in Washburn, Minnesota; Evamae Monasmith a house wife from Albany, New York; Dean Leonard, football coach of Salina High School; Ann Shackleton, a Comptometer operator for the Denver Dry Goods Company; Murray Folsom, owner of a Hereford cattle ranch near Durango, Colorado. Ila Selvage, a court reoorter in Reno; Rose Broyles, star of M.G.M.'s latest production in The Ukulele, The Grass Skirt, and the Thing. Garold Badger a test pilot of Jet Airplanes for the Army Air Force. Twenty-seven members of the class were now present, and everyone regreted the absence of two members. Our host sighted a raft approaching the island; by the time it reached the beach the members of the class were there to welcome this strange craft flying a purple and cream flag with a Cougar head on it. 3etty, Rose, and Cogie, the '51 cheerleaders, led the group in 15 rahs for Jerald Everson and Jordan Olson, two world famous bums, who were the occupants of the raft. All twenty-nine members were now present to enjoy a week- end of reminiscing and attend the pineapple festival. Before departing they sang the old school song and the host Edgar Joe Warner presented each of his classmates with a case of pine- apples as they left the island of Kaiioolawe.
