Other activities during the year were two trips to Hays, Kansas. One to hear the U.S. Marine Band in Concert and the other trip was to appear at the Hays College Band Day and Homecoming. The Band performed at all home football games by giving exhibitions during the halves and one-half of the band was used at home basketball games. The Band also appear- ed at the V.F.W. Laff it Off” show and at the V.F.W, rodeo prior to school. The Concert Band was a part of the annual Christmas concert; the Band appeared at the District Music Festival at Concordia and also played a very important part in the Jewell County Music Festival. 22 ‘Mt-ag Front row—Carolyn Kelly, Eileen McKim, Betty Jo Proctor, Norma Jean Warner, Jane Smith, Gwendeen Merritt, Gwendolyn Blair Middle row—Freda Kealey, Ruth O'Hara, Anne Siemon, Patricia Green, Nancy Teeple, Anita Siemon , Pauline Thompson Back row—Shirley Mason, Ann Shackleton, Janice Platt, Teresa Waugh, Shirley Wilsman, Patricia Hayes, Delila Studer Front row—Juanita Willett, Janice Howard, Mary Holmes, Betty Hancock, Claudene Hanson, Lois Claycamp, Bonnie Hodges, Charlotte Lichty Middle row__Norma Houghtaling, Lola Jean Graham, Carroll Modlin, Letha Modlin, Ila Selvage, Jo Anne McElroy, Rose Proctor, Marjorie Peterson Back row—Jacqueline Matousek, Evamae Monasmith, Bonnie Guffin, Rose Broyles, Cogie Dillman, Cecelia Bunch, Barbara Nichols OIK-ACT PLOO CAST JUAIGR PLfly CAST 24 DMMIflTICS ont-fld PLfly THE SINGAPORE SPIDER Seated—Horn Warner, Dick Judy Standing—Rose Broyles, Buck Ewing, Wayne Hanson JUniOR PLfly HER EMERGENCY HUSBAND First row__Ann Shackleton, Cecelia Bunch, Betty Hancock, Cogie Dillman Back row__Mary Holmes, Murray Smith, Joe Platt, Murray Folsom, Duane Wiley, Don Megill, Bonnie Guffin. One day I had the honor of covering the story of a television show in New York City, New York. Ab I arrived at my hotel I saw one of my old classmates, the wealthy young play boy Monsieur Otto Ross Rohla Jr. We hadn't seen each other since the night of graduation and he invited me to dinner at The Stork Club. We were discussing our former classmates and I said I'd like to know where each one was and what he was doing. Otto then told me he was owner of the show that I was cover- ing and one of his mechanics had assembled a machine by which it would be possible to locate each one of our classmates. Immediately after dinner Otto called his car and we went to his studio on 16th and Plaza to see the review of our classmates on the screen. Pressing a button Otto informed me we were now to see our classmates in foreign countries. First we see Norma Murray at Cannes on the French Riviera. She is now sole owner and proprietor of Merts Traveling Beauty Parlor. Among her customers are Mrs. Aly Khan and her Daughter Yasmin who are vacationing at that resort. 39 Lynn Volker is also located in a foreign country, Newberg, Italy to be exact. He is now a Romeo of the merchant marines with a girl in every port. Otto then pushed another button and the scene changed to the United States. Winton Ewing, a famous high school drummer known as Pud is now tour- ing with Fred Warings Orchestra. They are playing at the Billy Rose's Dia- mond Horseshoe. Faryl McDill, Director of the Kansas State Board of Education has brought up the debatable question of longer school hours, more intelligent teachers, and a new history book for Seniors. Keith Megill is doing very well as a sports announcer over NBC. He has taken over for Bill Stem. Dick Judy, profitable young owner of the Judy Ranch and a graduate of Kansas University, is principal of the high school at the city of Montrose. Wayne Hanson owner of the Boom Cora Farm has just founded a new type of hybrid com without shucks or silks. Jane Smith is now manager of the Ever Ready Baby Sitters Inc.. It's quite a racket. Mr. Tickel is still a steady customer. Micky Rafferty known as Tex, is the owner of the best herd of cattle in Texas. His ranch covers an area of 500,000 acres. When Zade fixes it it stays fixed ia the slogan of the former Beam Garage. Earl has taken over the garage and made it a very profitable business. Opal Groves who is residing in Florida with her husband is enjoying the bright Florida sun. In her spare time she does seamstress work. Loren Meeker is very busy with his full time job of running the bus line from Mankato to Esbon. He is the busiest in the evenings. Rosella Lagergren is now a young and talented professor in the In- diana Sta e College. She has just recently announced her engagement to a wealthy young farmer. Donald Hamilton, noted airplane pilot, can now be located at his home in Denver. Bonnie Parsons is now making good money at her job (keeping books) in Denver. Her leisure time .is spent taking care of her beautiful home. Dale Thronson has surprised us. He is now the efficient manager of the Ben Franklin Store in Hastings. Norma Warner was so impressed by the Shirley Savoy Hotel in Denver that 3he is now employed as day time elevator girl there. Burton Nichols has Just won first prize for telling the biggest tall tale in the world. Betty Jo Proctor is living with her husband at Brighton, Colorado. His occupation is farming and they are making it a very successful enterprise Darrell Weaverling is visiting his wife in New York City. He is playing professional basketball with the Globe Trouper sand doesn't get to to be at home much. After seeing this review of the class of '50 I returned to my hotel room, thinking that I was a member of a very remarkable class who grad- uated at the half way mark of the century. 40 THE JOURNEY OF THE CLASS OF 1950 In 1937 five of the 1950 graduating claae, Jane Smith, Milton Rafferty, Winton Ewing, Donald Hamilton, and Burton Nichols were classmates in kindergarten. We gained and lost many during the remaining grade school years. Those we gained who are still with us are Faryl McDill, Darrell Weaverling, Rosella Lagergren, Earl Zade, Loren Meeker, Bonnie Parsons, Betty Proctor, Norma Murray, Dale Thronson, and Wayne Hanson. We started our four year educational journey in high school chugging along in a Model T with Darrell Weaverling as our driver. Opal Groves, Dick Judy, Melvin Rannebeck, and Keith Megill were new riders. We survived our freshmen initiation with only a few tears. A brainstorm occurred in our first class meeting and as a result the dandelion was chosen the class flower to be overpowered later by the tulip. Dick Judy was the driver for the second year of our journey. Our main activities were parties and serving banquets, these included the Mother-Son banquet, Mother- Daughter banquet, and the Jr. Sr. banquet. We started the third year of our journey with Gene McDaniels driving. One Mad Night the Jr. play was presented December 7 under the direction of Miss Masters. A Dutch Festival was the theme of the Jr. Sr. banquet on April 26. Norma Jean Warner and I$mn Volker Joined that year. Melvin Rannebeck was the driver as we started the last lap of our journey. The Adorable Imp the Sr. play was presented February 10 directed by Miss Masters. The Senior Sneak, Class Night, Baccalaurette and Commence- ment activities will end our Journey through grade and high school years under the capable direction of our parents and teachers. CLASS We of the class of 50, eager for what's in store Look to the unknown future beyond the open door. Our yesterdays were our school days where hours of classes flew Today is our graduation; commencement of something new. Tomorrow we meet the future with its hopes, its smiles, and tears Always recalling with pleasure the fun of our high school years. 41 The State Exchange Bank Mankato, Kansas J. C.
