After the fire, which destroyed the U- nion School, Manistee was proud to quickly build a new school, Central High, located on the same spot. This was completed by 1887. At this school, clubs, sports, and an ex- cellent Commercial Department were added to the already formed educational program. Pictured at the left is the Girl ' s Basketball team of 1920. An extensive educational program was provided for the students at Central by 1899, as shown by the report card of Chauncy Wilcox, at the far right. The graduating class of 1887 had three courses of study, Latin, Science, and Busi- ness. One of the class members is shown at the right. The Central school was soon outgrown by the population of Manistee and became a grade school. It was torn down in the late 1950 ' s. Trolley cars replaced wagon wheels and telegraph lines sprung up along River Street as Manistee emerged from the lumbering era.
