The first high school in Manistee, Union School, was located on the corner of Oak and 1st Streets. It was started in 1867. By 1872, Edwin Russell became the Superin- tendent and he succeeded by 1874 to com- plete a formal course of study for all stu- dents. A music department and an extensive library were also added. The population of the students doubled within a few years time and the additions were made to the original building, But on May 1, 1886, trag- edy struck as the building was destroyed by fire. Pictured at the left are the schooners which moored in the Manistee Channel near what is now 5 th Ave. Beach. Lumbering played an important econom- ic role during this time period in Manistee. Pictured above is the old Sands Mill. The middle picture is of the prize winning load of cut lumber which was on display at the Chicago World ' s Fair in 1892. At the bottom right is a scene of the lumberjacks after work in the camp. Lum- bering was an important part of the area until the early 1900 ' s. Because of the lum- bering industry, Manistee at one time boasted the most (19) millionaires per cap- ita than any other city in the United States.
