By 1872, Edwin Russell became the Superin- tendent and he succeeded by 1874 to com- plete a formal course of study for all stu- dents. A music department and an extensive library were also added. The population of the students doubled within a few years time and the additions were made to the original building, But on May 1, 1886, trag- edy struck as the building was destroyed by fire. Pictured at the left are the schooners which moored in the Manistee Channel near what is now 5 th Ave. Beach. Lumbering played an important econom- ic role during this time period in Manistee. Pictured above is the old Sands Mill. The middle picture is of the prize winning load of cut lumber which was on display at the Chicago World ' s Fair in 1892. At the bottom right is a scene of the lumberjacks after work in the camp. Lum- bering was an important part of the area until the early 1900 ' s. Because of the lum- bering industry, Manistee at one time boasted the most (19) millionaires per cap- ita than any other city in the United States. After the fire, which destroyed the U- nion School, Manistee was proud to quickly build a new school, Central High, located on the same spot. This was completed by 1887. At this school, clubs, sports, and an ex- cellent Commercial Department were added to the already formed educational program. Pictured at the left is the Girl ' s Basketball team of 1920. An extensive educational program was provided for the students at Central by 1899, as shown by the report card of Chauncy Wilcox, at the far right. The graduating class of 1887 had three courses of study, Latin, Science, and Busi- ness. One of the class members is shown at the right. The Central school was soon outgrown by the population of Manistee and became a grade school. It was torn down in the late 1950 ' s. Trolley cars replaced wagon wheels and telegraph lines sprung up along River Street as Manistee emerged from the lumbering era. The old Woodrow Wilson school just couldn ' t keep up with the ever-rising population of students. A high school education now became a privilege of the majority rather than a special privilege of a few. The complete cost of the building came to $290,000.00. This included equipment, sidewalks, architectual fees, and improvement of the grounds. At the upper left, two 1945 cheer- leaders are shown. At the far left is a cast picture of the 1937 school play. A young man in his shop class is depicted in the upper right corner. An exciting scene from typing class is shown The Manistee High School Band, their eye-catching uniforms, is t immediate left. Lance Erickson played No. 1 man this year having a 39.8 average. He was also voted Most Valuable Player and was placed on the 1st team All-Conference. Next in line was Paul Brastrom, who was co-captain with Erickson. He played No. 2 man, had a 43.2 average, and made 2nd team All-Conference. Tom Wandrych, another senior on the squad, played No. 4 man and had an average of 42.6 and also made 2nd team All-Conference. Jeff Lijewske made 2nd team All-Conference and played 5th man this year with a 44.2 average. Todd May, the only junior on the top five, had a 43.6 average and scored a hole-in-one in a match this season, being the 1st Chippewa golfer ever to have one. The Cross Country team did not claim many victories in the won-loss column as their record of 1-16 shows, but it did promote great maturity in all runners. Coach Perkins saw a very positive attitude towards competition among members. With the loss of only one senior, next year ' s team looks very bright. The team consisted of 12 runners. The top two runners were Mike Barnes and Dave Pachesny. Steve Ha m and Steve Oliver shared the third place honors. Mike Ghetto Barnes finished 13th in the Regionals to qualify for State. At the State meet he finished 53rd out of 70 runners. He was the second runner in recent history to qualify for a State meet. CROSS COUNTRY TEAM PRODUCES STATE QUALIFIER GIRL ' S TENNIS BREAKS SCHOOL SHUT-OUT RECORD The Girls Tennis Team had an outstanding year, compiling 12 wins and only 3 losses. Ten of these wins were shut-outs, breaking the old school record. The team also took 2nd place in the Regional Tournament, qualifying for State. Team co-captains this year were Sally Long and Jean Pommerville. The entire team earned major letter awards. The players with the best records were Rise Futterer with 17 wins-3 losses, Jean Pommerville with 16 wins-4 losses, and Lori Kaczmarek with 16 wins-3 losses. The team will be losing only 3 seniors this year, so they should have a well expe- rienced, mature team for next season. The sea- son brought about old records being broken and new records being set. The win-loss record itself was the best set by any Girl ' s Basketball team at Manistee High School. Other accomplishments were made with Tammy Jones becoming the first girl to score over 1 ,000 points in her high school career. She was also voted Most Valuable Player of the North Central Conference, as well as the team MVP. It was the third year in a row for the basketball team to come in first place in the Conference and the second year for them to go undefeated in the League. The team also brought home the District trophy for the 2nd year in a row. Tarn Jones and Brenda Rutowski, team co-captains, were selected to the First Team All-Conference, as well as receiving All-State Honorable Mention. Lee Ann Huffman held honors on the Second Team All-Conference. Lee Ann, Tarn, and Brenda were placed on the New— Advocate ' s All-County Dream Team. The girl ' s averaged 58 points per game with their opponents ' averaging only 41 . They pulled down 40 re- bounds, as opponents ' 30. St. Francis 28 50 Scottville 54 The Girl ' s Junior Varsity started the season with a new coach and a new attitude. Coach Michael Munro took over the reins promising nothing but enthusiasm and excitement. The squad started out the season as if they were going to break the record for the most losses, dropping four of their first five games. Then through dedication and determination the Junior Chips took eleven of their next twelve games, in posting a league leading record of 10-2. The highlight of the streak was the domi- nation of highly touted and previously unbeaten Big Rapids twice, 35-28 and 37-25. The pinnacle of the season came when the Chips broke Traverse City St. Francis ' s 18 game winning streak, ruining their season with a convincing 39-28 pasting. This year ' s team, composed mostly of first year players, established many new records and broke several old records, most notably best season record (13-7) and best conference record (10-2). The program this year stressed the development of the fundamentals and the im- portance of teamwork. The Jayvees were led by freshman sensation, Leah Abla, who ' s 306 points and 142 rebounds worked out to 16.1 ppg and 7.9 rpg. Cindy Gielczyk posted 101 points and a record 175 rebounds while Cathy Gustad put in 73 points and took down 170 rebounds. Pride, Dedication, and Enthusiasm-— Great Job Ladies!!!!! SO CLOSE . . . BUT YET SO FAR Unfortunately, it takes more than just attitude and hustle to establish a winning football program, If these attributes were the sole determinates of a season ' s out- come, the Chips would surely have finished 1st in the Conference. Throughout the season the Chips often came close but usually fell short. The team lost 4 games by 6 or fewer points. Leading the Chips in defense were Phil Kaminski, Don Tomaszewski, Brian Atwood, and Scott Fauble, all being placed on the 1st team All -Conference. Mark Bratchi led in tackling with 46 yards and was named to 2nd team All -Conference. On offense, Shawn Gillespie led with 616 yards and was put on the 2nd team All- Conference. The Chips defense allowed 1 1 1 points while we scored on offense 89 . The pass- ing department on offense had a total of 397 to 1177 yards on the ground. Coach Lindeman commented on his team, This team developed more than any other team I ' ve had. Some of the players who started on this team didn ' t even start as freshman. This shows how much they improved. They had less natural talent, but because of hustle and sheer desire, they made up for it. Where Have All the Winners Gone? Front Row L-R, D. Frechette, N. Despite being small in numbers, the Girls team had a real fine year placing ninth at Regionals. Great Job Coach! WRESTLERS RURN THE MATS FROSH B-BALL As Coach Terry Walker looked over his young freshman prospects on an early November morning, he probably wondered how and where to start. One ' s estimate of the probable outcome of the season started pretty much on target as the Little Chips were defeated soundly in their first couple outings. But one thing was not to be denied, the freshman had talent. With such talent as Bruce Williams and Dan Wil- kosz on their side, the opponents had better look out. Finishing out with a 8-9 record the Chips were respected by many opponents. Great emphasis was placed on the fundamentals and some experience all season long. Great Job Freshman! B-Ball In preparing for the Varsity, the J.V. ' s posted a fabulous 154 record. They worked hard to beat many tough oppon- ents. Team work was one of the many factors of their suc- cess. Leading the way for the Chips was Gary Feliczak with Dan Wagberg and Mike Barnes doing a fine job also. All the play- ers coming off the bench did a good job in making the team a success. Coach Harned did an excellent job in getting his team work working together and bringing out the best in all the players. He helped them gain much valuable experience for the years to come. §« ! k i -| gm tefr «fr tJ s 2 pQ 1 H§ |p II i L-R, Coach Harned, M. (Ghetto) Barnes, M. Majchrzak, E. Miller, G. I ' eliczak, D. They had the talent, the enthusiasm, and the coaching, so what could go wrong? There were quite a few high spots that could be recognized. For one thing, the Chips had five players with over 1 00 points over all. They also had 3 players recog- nized by the North Central Conference. They were Bruce and Scott Parkes who made the 1st team All-Conference, and Lance Erickson who was put on the Honor- able Mention list. The starting five included the two giants, Bruce and Scott Parkes. Bruce led the team in shooting and Scott was second. They were also 1st and 2nd respectively in rebounds. Next in line was the ever-so-quick Don Tomaszewski, who was well known for his good defense. Last were the two guards, Lance Erickson and Randy Block who directed the team in defense, assists and steals. Dan Johnson and Paul Brastrom were numbers one and two off the bench, with Dan playing guard and Paul playing forward. They both helped keep the wheels rolling several times. Coach Perkins brought a new insight into the game. He came from Midland last year, sensing he could bring about a Manistee capable of making it to the finals. E- ven though he didn ' t make it this year the Chips did take a giant step forward. Coach Perkins has started a rebuilding program throughout the lower grades, while always improving the team. Bruce Parkes, Scott Parkes, Lance Erickson, Paul Brastrom, and Don Tomaszew- ski will all be missed next season. But Coach Perkins has already got ideas about next years team which will have 8 returning lettermen. 1977-78 Varsity Basketball MHS 11-7 OPP 77 Traverse City Central 84 60 Ludington 64 73 Big Rapids 74 57 Mason County Central 58 81 Reed City 69 53 Cadillac 46 69 Benzie Central 82 73 T.C. Other projects and activities which the Student Senate worked on included: Odd Jobs Cam- paign, Helping out on Track Tag Day, the school flag contest, Halloween Dress-up Day, Christmas Assembly, the election of a Winter Sports King, Favorite Sports Dress- up Day, Hall Decorating Contest, the Winter Concert, Send-A-Flower to Your Sweetheart Day, Student-Faculty Basketball Game, A Short Film Festival, Candy Sale, and Selling Shamrocks for Dystrophy. With this growth there was added to the curriculum many outside ac- tivities, which helped the student get a well- rounded education. Gradually, however, these extra-curricular activities seemed to be taking the spotlight while scholarship was given the backseat. Students were not inter- ested in studying anymore. There was no honor given to those who did. In 1921, the National Honor Society was formed to combat this attitude. The frame- work of the Society is very simple. Manistee High School received their charter in 1937, one of the earliest charters granted. The school is then entitled to place the upper fifteen percent of the graduating class into the Society. Five percent of the members may be elected in their junior year. Also, in recent years, sophomores were elected to the National Honor Society. TRI- HI- Y IS REWARDING The purpose of Tri-Hi-Y is to involve members in developing leadership, brotherhood, equali- ty, and service, while increasing in awareness of oneself and the world. Induction ceremonies were held on Oct. 25, 1977. The offi- cers of the first Tri-Hi-Y Club (1948) participated in the candle- light service. Putting together a Spirit Book and ringing bells were just two of their 1977 activities. 1978 found them selling candy and preparing bills to be sent to Legislature in April. 1st Row L-R, Janice Johnson, Treas.
