STANLEY One of the best things that can happen to a Manistee High School student is to be assigned to English in C-8. Mr. Stanley's approach to American and English Literature is stimulating and unique. For several minutes after the period begins he sits quietly, then slowly rising he says, We will discuss this lesson, first generally and then specifically-with your books closed. Mr. Stanley is not satisfied to skim the surface, but instead he delves into the motivation, style, and effectiveness of each author. What better pre- paration can a student have for college English? Mr. Stanley is head of the English department and has taught at Manistee High School for several years. He earned his B.A. at Grinnell, his M.A. at Drake University. ln addition, he has done graduate work at Michigan State Univer- sity. We proudly dedicate the 1960 Manichigan to Mr. Kenneth Stanley. ,- .J FACULTY ADMI N ISTRATI CN Mri Norbert Radtke MY- Neil Bfenndn Superintendent Principal Board of Education Mr. Richard Hallock, Mr. Bert Chambers, Mr. Robert Fred- rickson, Mr. Dorr Johnson, Mr. Ernest Peterson, Mr. Nor- bert Radtke, Mrs. Emma Jolly. Gordon Ogilvie led the Chips in their victory by scoring 3 TDs. Don Cerderholm, Manistee's ground- gaining Fullback, scored 2 more, and Quarterback Norm Radtke scored the remaining tally. This victory was only the beginning of the many more to come for the Surprise Team of the North. Varsity Action BIG RAPIDS For their first conference win of the season the Chips trounced the highly ranked Big Rapids Cardinals, 34-14. Manistee did a superb job, both of- fensely and defensely on the rain soaked Cardinal field. The half-time score was an astonishing 27-0, and another TD by Radtke in the third quar- ter pushed in to 34-O. Two TDs by Big Rapids brought the final score to 34-14. The leading scorers for the Chips were Radtke, Cederholm and Carmody. ALMA The Manistee Chippewas, who were not too highly rated in the conference, shocked the football world by whal- loping the favored Alma Panthers, 38-0, before a Manistee Homecoming crowd of 1700. The first quarter saw Manistee with a 20-0 lead, and the half-time score of 32-0. The only TD to come in the second half was on an electrifying 90-yard run by Junior Fullback Don Cederholm, Cederholm had a total of 3 TDs with Radtke, Ogilvie, and Pala- mondon scoring the remaining tally. Varsity Action LUDINGTON The winless Ludington eleven was no match for the rampaging, undefeated Chippewas. The Chips, scoring almost at will, set a new record by licking the Orioles, 60-14. The score at half-time, 27-0, indicated the Chips' early control of the game. Hansen and Cederholm scored 3 TDs each, while Capt. Carmody added two, and Mucha, one. CADILLAC For the first time in the season the Chippewas were held to a scoreless first half. In the second half the Chippewa eleven sprang loose and scored 24 points. The Vikings gained only 5 yards in the whole game, leaving the final score, 24-O. This hard-earned victory, played on a sea of mud gave the Chippewas at least a share of the N-C Conference crown. Scoring for the victors were Cederholm, with 3 TDs and Ogil- vie, with one. Varsity Action MT. PLEASANT The most surprising game in the state took place in Mt. Pleasant, October 30. The underdog Oilers upset the No. 'I B Team in the state, the Manistee Chip- pewas, 14-13. The Oilers, encouraged by a TD on their first play of the game, kept the Chips in check for the rest of the game. It was a lost battle of time for the Chippewas, they had numerous scoring chances in the last few minutes of the game, but couldn't overcome the fast Oiler eleven. Scoring both TDs for the Chips was Cederholm, ST. FRANCIS The Chippewas bounced back from their shocking upset the previous week to defeat the T.C. St. Francis Gladiators, 7-O. The Gladiators held the Chips to their lowest scoring game of the season. The lone TD of the game came from Ogilvie on a fine 50 yard punt return. This victory was the last home game for 14 Seniors of the 1959 Co-Champs. Varsity Action NORTH MUSKEGON In their final game of the successful 1959 season, the Chippewas, playing in five inches of snow, defeated the North Muskegon Norsemen, 12-0. After a scoreless first period, the Chips marched 52 yards in the snow for a TD, scored by Capt. Carmody. Terry Hansen made the other on a spectacular 67 yard run. Thus, the Chippewas ended their 1959 football season with a record of 7 wins and only one loss. -'l Reserve eam ln the 1959 season the reserve football team won four of their seven games. Despite the superior opposition, the reserves showed fight and determination. The team gained valu- able experience for their future years in M.H.S. Football. Radtke added 18 to aid the Chips victory. Ludington Jan. 29 The Manistee Chippewas lost a thriller to the Ludington Orioles, in The Game of the Year. The Chips took the lead at the beginning with the Orioles only seeing the best end of the scoreboard once when they held a 11-10 lead during the first period. The final first period score saw Manistee holding a 16-14 edge. In the second period, Manistee, playing the best they have played all season, widened the gap to a 36-26 lead. As the third period started Ludington showed they were determined to win by cutting the lead down to a score of 49-48 for the first time since the first period. The lead then changed hands several times with Ludington having a 59-58 advantage with 6 seconds left in the game. At this point Ogilvie drove in for a layup and came down with a bloody nose. The old saying, No blood-no foul, apparently was not true in this case as no foul was called. Ludington later made a free throw making the final score 60-58. High for the Chips was Ogilvie with 23. Johnson had 14, and Radtke had 11. Cadillac Feb. 12 The Manistee Chippewas easily rolled past the Cadillac Vikings, chalking up another conference win. The taller Chips held a supremacy on the boards which was a determining factor in the victory. The first period held some excitement as the score was only 10-8 in favor of the Chips, but from then on the Chips completely dominated the game. By halftime the Chips had opened up their lead to 35-24. ln the third period the Chips continued to outscore the Vik- ings, the Vikings now trailed by a final score of 76- 55. Ogilvie excelled his performance of the last week by scoring 38 points, Radtke had 12. Big Rapids Feb. 19 The Manistee Chippewas beat the Big Rapids Cardinals, giving Manistee second place in the con- ference. As usual Manistee had a hard first period, as the lead changed hands five times with Manistee holding a small 13-11 lead going into the second period. The Chips outscored the Cardinals 26-5 in the second period, making the halftime score 39-16 in favor of the Chips. In the third period the Chips con- tinued to outscore the Cardinals. In the fourth period the Chips were substituted freely, which allowed the Cardinals to come within 17 points of the Chips, as the final score was 63-46. Ogilvie had 24 points, fol- lowed by Lynch with 13. JUNICJR VARSITY left to Right, Row 'l: C. Hasse, A. Monroe, J. Wisniski, C. son, A. Nurnburger, D. Radtke, C. Kuenzer, D. Roach, M Rhodea, A.
