Ken Stanley fin Jndian Pnaqenn O GREAT SPIRlT whose voice I hear in the winds, and whose breath gives life to all the world, hear me. lcome before you, one of your many children - l am small and weak. I need your strength and wisdom. Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made, my ears sharp to hear your voice. Make me wise, so that I may know the things you have taught my people, the lesson you have hidden in every leaf and rock. I seek strength not only to be superior to my brothers, but to be able to fight my greatest enemy - myself. Make me ever ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes, so when Iife fades as a fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame. - from Chief Yellow Lark APPEAL of the GREAT SPIRIT by Cyrus E Dallin 3 TO THE SPIRIT OF THE CHIPPEWAS ..... P l I ADMINISTRATION During this critical year in our nations his- tory, the country has suddenly been aroused to the crying needs of education. The people of the United States know that the education of our young people must be on an even higher level if we are to exist as a free nation in a peaceful world. The citizens of Manistee have placed their trust in our able Board of Education. Super- intendent Dorr L. Wilde, who retires this year after 22 years of distinguished service in that capacity, and Principal Norbert Radtke have been our guides and leaders in our quest for a better education . GUIDANCE For man of us, high school is but the first step in our education . With the thoughts of col lege before us, we need assistance and guidance in planning our courses of study, choosing a school, and seeking financial aid for our college days. For those students whose formal education will end here atMHS, the guidance department helps in job placements and better prepares us for our first step outinto the business world. All of this, Ius the many other phases of counselling is the job of Guidance Director Neil Brennan and his depart- ment. The MHS StudentCouncil has striven to give the student body an able and effective voice in school affairs. During the spring of l957a school-wide elect- ion was carried on, and amid speeches, bands, and posters the student bodyelected Dennis Cawthorne and Bob Strzyzewslci as president and vice president respec- tively. Other members include Seniors Don Groves and Arlene Engwall, secretary, Juniors Ida Anderson and Jon Snyder, Sophomores Sylvia Merlcey and Ed Madsen, Freshmen Charlotte Wieda and Jim Knight, 8th graders Linda Larsen and Jim Baumgartner. As Council mem- bers, they practice democracy. During the year, the Council sent SC members into homerooms to make periodic reports, presented 3 SC assembly reports, reorganized certain Council proce- dures, sponsored meetings on high school baseball and revival of school paper, sponsored Homecoming fes- tivities and school Christmas party, and worked to im- prove manners and conduct of our fine student body. Schoenherr racked up 29 for Ludington. MANISTEE 70 CADILLAC 62 In one of the 1957-58 season's biggest crowd-pleasers, Manistee stormed back in the 2nd half to tip Cadillac's up-and-down Vikings, 70-62, in a North Central thriller. For thisone, Cadillac was up, and bat- tled the Chippewas to the wire in a contest that featured dead-eye shooting by both quintets. The Tribe hoopsters got the jump on the home team and carved out a 16-15 first period lead. Cadillac started to con- nect from the corner in the second stanza to give the Vikings a 38-33 halftime margin. But Manistee poured on the powerto forge ahead, 51-46 going into the last 8 min- utes. Don Zanotti personally accounted for 24 Manistee points. Also in double figures were Gordon Ogilvie with 13 and Bob Strzyzewski with 10. MANISTEE 65 LUDINGTON 56 Smashing the Ludington Orioles squarely out of the ran ks of Michigan's basketball unbeatens, the Chippewas of Manistee ex- ploded for a 65-56 tr i um ph over ancient arch-rival Ludington in the season's No. l attraction. A iam-packed crowd of l,200 watched the Tribe sweep the backboards and display a superior brand of teamwork that kept Joe Kowatch's Orioles on the run all night. Manistee's big victory snapped the Ludington unbeaten string at l2. The two clubs traded leads in the opening minutes before the Orange and Black could claim an I8-I6 first period edge . But Manistee pulled out front to stay in the 2nd quarter, nailing down a 34-28 halftime le ad, and 50-41 3rd period bulge. Zanotti pumpedin I8 for the MHS victory, wh i l e Scott and Stuck each drilled away with l4. MANISTEE 67 PETOSKEY 66 Petoskey high school gym erupted into a deafening roar in the final three minutes of the Chippewas-Northman battle, and it wasn't until players, coaches, and fans got into the act that Coach Ken Rutherford and his Tribe were sure ofa cliff-hanging 67-66 victory. After lead i ng by as much as I8 points in the 4th quarter, Manistee 'saw Pe- toskey come up with an unbelieveable fin- ish that netted them 28 points in the last period--TO in the last 58 seconds of play-- to turna so-so game into aspine-tingling who's on first finale. The Chips had quar- ter leads ofl8-l3, 33-27, and 52--38 before Petoskey made their stupendous comeback. Zanotti paced the Chippewas with l7. Stuck added I2 and Neitzke hit for l0. MANISTEE 68 MT. PLEASANT 40 The Chippewas b ree zed past the Mt. Pleasant Oilers, 68-40, in a North Central Contest that saw Manistee put on one of its best offensive shows of the season. It was the Tribe's first appearance in the new MPHS gym. With Ogilvie and Stuck both clicking from outcourt, Manistee rammed home 23 points for a 1st' period lead of 23- 10. Reserves dotted the line-up for Man- istee in the middle pe riods but the Chips kept coming, holding quarter leads of 35- 19 and 45-28. With the starting five back in the fray during the final quarter, Man- istee rolled up another 23 points to put the game out of the Oiler's reach. Dave Stuck was the Tribe's big gun, netting 22. Also in double figures were Ogilvie Q131, Za- notti 021, and Strzyzewski UU. MANISTEE 61 ST. FRANCIS 51 Turn i ng in one of their finest perfor- mances of the year, Manistee's Battl ing Chippewas tu rned back Traverse City St. Francis, 61-51, in a rough and tumble af- fair on t'he Gladiator's home floor. The game, wh i ch ended the Tribe's regular schedule, saw the Chippewas avenge their season opening loss to St. Francis in early December. Manistee really had to work to pull thisone out. Displaying rapid fire pass- ing and atorrid fast break, the Chips edged into a 15-14 first quarter lead . Manistee pulled away in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, taking pe r i od leads of 30-22 and 46-38. Zanotti dumped in 20 points, while Ogilvie whipped in 13 and Grabowski added 10. Crisp rebounding stood for Manistee. +1 M Q T' A X as J gs K ie S m f f i QQ hs Q X yi X J. p N -,f .s ,ima -y N55-11.fk'i .
