May this story serve to keep fresh the memories of happy days at M.H.S. ,S Deddcmficwz We, the class of 1956, dedicate this book to Mrs. Rebe Clason, our counselor and friend since we first entered high school. Her patient understanding and intelligent interest has been an inspiration to us all. 715 ,4 Zum! , , 1 Q X 0 1 , ' . 'N A., LEFT TO RIGHT: Emma Jolly, Sec. Bultema, Pres. Dorr Johnson. X. The new Jett- erson Elementary School was completed in l955, and plans are under consideration for an addition to the present high school building. Some of the improve- ments being planned are: a new gym, a band room, a study hall, additional classrooms, guidance facili- ties, added space for shops, increased homemaking and cafeteria space and other badly needed facili- ties. 12 During the past three years the enrollment at M.H.S. has increased at the rate of about 50 students per year-the present enrollment being 649. This increased enrollment has brought with it added problems. As administrator of the high school, Mr. Radtke, working in conjunction with the faculty and student body, is responsible for establishing disciplinary policies and practices, supervising cur- riculum development and improving general aca- demic policies. With an approximate budget of S450,000, and an estimated net worth of over Sl,l50,000, our schools have become one of the city's largest financial enterprises. Purchasing, hiring personnel, maintaining vital statistics, annual reports and health records are but some ofthe many duties of the superintendent. Sixteen schools were represented, including uni- versities and colleges, business colleges, and schools of nursing. Informal conferences were held during the day in the library. How do I plan my course of study? What is the value of the Kuder Test? How many malors and minors do I need? These were some of the questions that were answered by the student panel sponsored by the guidance department to acquaint parents and students with various ma- terials and techniques, in use at M.H.S. Mr. Hegler consults with parents qemlfmeaz' With Kay Boyer as moderator, the student panel discusses guidance problems. 755 ,4 gum! lable 4 . , 1 w L 4 . -, u ezine .V ,LL,.: , guw, 1- .Nu 41-yan M, .1 , 54. 6 I ,, if V4 M Agia K, ,,f'1' Q li Q3 A ' i,, A e' i 5 ., -ff' .-W' . www 1 I xp, uf' . We chose John Anderson, President, Jim Hansen, Vice- President, and Jack T. Davis, Sec. Treas. Our big social affair of the year was the closed party, Circus Capers. Everyone in the class worked to make the party a big success. Freshmen! Now we were officially members of M.H.S. We made lots of new friends and also joined the many clubs open to us. Jim Hansen was elected President, with Doug GeBott, Vice-President, Nancy Bryck, Secretary, and Jerry Wright, Treasurer. This year we had our first open dance for the school. The theme was May Day and much hard work was put into the colorful decorations. When we were sophomores we elected Pete Clason as President, Debbie Smith, Vice-President, and Nancy Bryck, Sec. Treas. One of the high-lights of the year was the purchasing of our class rings from the Herff Jones Company. Future Fantasy was the theme of our dance with the decorations depicting scenes from outer space. September 1954. We were now confident juniors and upper-classmen as well. Harvey Groves was elected President, with Dave Anderson, Vice-President, Helen Meier, Secre- tary, and Nancy Bryck, Treasurer. This year we welcomed Miss Greenhoe and Mr. Kul- dau as our permanent sponsors. Under their direction the class of '56 presented Manistee High School with one of the most beautiful J-Hops ever seen. The decorations carried out the theme Au Temps de Mai lin the time of Mayl. Each wall represented spring in a different country, with the mural on the south wall being 20 feet high. This long-re- membered dance, under the general chairmanship of Pete Clason was a big success. Seniors at last! But it came and passed all too quickly. Elected President was Harvey Groves, with John Anderson, Vice-President, Debbie Smith, Secretary, and Nancy Bryck, Treasurer. Earning the honor of Valedictorian was Peter Clason, Co-Salutitorians were Nancy Peterson and Chuck Nelson. This year was full of many happy, but also last times. The last band show, the last football and basketball games and the last class dances. The year was climaxed by our long-awaited Skip-Trip to Washington D.C. and the big city, New York. Now all we have left are the Senior Prom and Commencement before we become full-fledged high school graduates, ready to make our place in the world. These years in high school have been some of the happiest years of our lives and will never be forgotten.
