Many of the boys and girls who make up this group of tumblers are becoming perfectionists on the various pieces of apparatus. Several of the members have been on the team for as long as six and seven years. This year, besides the performance at the Sands Circus, the team performed twice at the Manton Harvest Festival, and presented an assembly at Walkerville Con- solidated High School. 29 Qa- Seared: Clason, treasurer, Rav, president. Under the general chairmanship of Marilee Lacey, the decoration committee fashioned colorful scenes depicting various foreign countries. Over 50 couples danced to the strains of Tony Horvath and his band. Other committees did an equally splendid job in making the evening of May 26 a memorable success. Homecoming was another highlight of our senior year. Queen Glenda with her court, shivering from the chill Winds of the night, rode out on the football field previous to the game where she was crowned by Don Olson, f president of the Manistee Merchants. Bob Tobey, captain of the team for the night, pre- sented the queen with a bouquet of roses. O Glenda Belam receives ber crafwn from Don Olson. The Chippewas displayed a good passing attack while the Northmen were outstanding in their running. All Conference MANISTEE 0 - LUDINQTON 50 A powerful Ludington team spelled defeat for the Chips as the Orioles surged ahead with their convincing end sweeps and line plunges. But the always-fighting Chips showed spurts of power and team work themselves as they suffered a heavy defeat. Good blocking and running was the main reason for the Oriole victory but fuln- bles played an important part in the outcome of the game. MANISTEE I2 -BIG RAPIDS 20 In the first conference game of the season, the Chips were unsuccessful in their attempt to pol- ish off the Big Rapids Cards as they went down to defeat, 20-12. Johnston made the first Manistee score of the season when he landed on a loose ball in the Cardinal end zone. A pass from Johnston to Kuehl produced thc second touch- down of the game for the Chippewas. FI1sb drives forward . . . 7llf77IlS inrcrferemre. Stop that Oiler I .' .' Manistee scored its points in the final period after long drives to the Trojan goal line. Suess and Johnston pushed across the Chippewa touch- downs and Bryck kicked the extra point. ZIMMERMAN MANISTEE 20-CANADIAN SOO I2 The Chippewas showed spark and power in downing a rugged Canadian Soo team for their first win of the season. It was Manistce's superior playing and teamwork which produced the Chip- pewa victory as Brooks, Smith, and Sucss ac- counted for the touchdowns. Bryck kicked two extra points, the second one being made official after a two weeks' dispute. MANISTEE 0 - CADILLAC 54 Manistee met up with a championship team when it played the Vikings and suffered its heaviest defeat of the season. Although the Cadillac eleven showed greater superiority, the Chippe- was had them on the run in the first period as the powerful Vikings could annex only one touchdown. After that it was Cadillac all the way. .Suesx scorer against Ut Pleamnt. Brooks dive: 171 after Mt Pleasmzt back TOBICY MINSTILR TOMASZEXX SKI NIANISTEE 6-AIT. PLEASANT Z6 Mt. Pleasant led 19-0 at the half, but the battling Chippewas came out on the field and stopped the Oilers cold in the second half. Holding the upper hand in this period, the Chips drove down the field time and time again only to lose the ball on fumbles. But they finally did make a score on a reverse play by Suess, a score which they rightly deserved. MANISTEE 0 -LUDINGTON 27 This homecoming game for the Chips proved unsuccessful as the Orioles walked away with their final victory of the season. Things did not look bright for the hlanistee squad during the first half but they were evenly matched in the second period as the Chips pressed the Orioles and made them fight for everything they got. Both teams were held scoreless in the second half with Manistee displaying scrap and power at intervals. , MANISTEIC 27 -HART 6 Playing in an almost steady blizzard on a field covered with snow, the Chippewas played their best and most impressive game of the season as they humbled the Hart Pirates by a 27-6 score. Manistee's superb blocking and tackling were big factors in the win and scores were plentiful for the Chips as Tomaszewski, Johnston, Smith, and Suess all crossed the enemy goal line for touchdowns. Coach GLEN HUNTER Alhough the Varsity Basketball Team did not turn in a too impressive record for the 1950- 1951 season, the team and coach decided that it had been a fairly successful year after all. Ending up with a season record of six wins and nine losses, the Chips, coached by Glen Hunter, turned in some surprising games and were a fighting team throughout the season. Coach I-Iunter's crew started out the rugged fifteen game schedule with a bang, winning three of its first four games. The first loss was to Catholic Central, a class A quintet from Grand Rapids, while the most impressive game up to that time was a 53 to 50 victory over Luding- ton. Returning from Christmas vacation, the Tribe fell to tough Traverse City and highly rated Cadillac before coming back into the victory column by beating Mt. Pleasant with an error- less performance. The Blue and Gold lost the next three games. Bumping into a powerful Petoskey squad and being edged by a 52 to 50 score, the Varsity redeemed itself in the next two contests, win- ning over Big Rapids, and also making up for the close defeat handed to it by the Northmen. The Tribe cagers ran into tough opposition when they played Traverse City, Cadillac, and Mt. Pleasant in the remaining games, but their performance against the champion Cadillac team will be long remembered. Losing to the Vikings in two overtime periods, this could easily be labeled as the Chippewas, most thrill- ing and best played game of the season. In the state district tournament the Tribesmen were downed by Hart 47 to 44, a team which they had beaten earlier in the season. At the conclusion of the season, Homer Smith, who was also the Chips leading scorer with a total of 201 points, gained a berth on the North Central Conference All-Star team. Dick Bryck, who turned in a fine performance at guard, was elected to the all conference sec- ond team. 82 VARSITY BASKETBALL SCORES Chippewas Opponents Manistee Grand Rapids Central Manistee Ludington ....,... , . Dave jach, Ron Suess, and Bill Stubbs were outstanding for the track team this season. jach scored QSM, points to lead the scoring for the team. He usually competed in the pole vault, the high jump, and the 440 yard dash. At the State Regional Meet in Cadillac, he took first place in the 440 with a time of 53.3 seconds to qualify for the state finals in Lansing. Suess is a dashman, and he used his speed to good advantage in the short dashes to collect a total of.64M points. In the dual ineet with Cadillac, he ran the 220 yard dash in 23.4 seconds to better the confer- ence record, but this time is unofficial because of the slight slope in the track. Stubbs performed exclusively in the mile run and took a total of 42 points during the season. In the hours of our Sophomore year Dick Bryck was chosen President, Bob Amor, Vice President, Glenda Behm, Secre- tary, Jerry Bauman, Treasurer. The class went all out in the Buttons and Beaus Dance, with the help of Mr. Capper and Mrs. Clason, our new class adviser. Once again . . . time to close session. The moments of our junior year flew by swiftly. The new class ring and the big event of the year, the j-Hop, kept every one busy. VV e chose VVin Kuehl to lead us, backed by Homer Smith, Vice President, Carol Novak, Secretary, and Nancy Peterson, Treasurer. The clock wasn't heard as the seconds of our Senior year sped past. With Bob Tobey as President, jack Anderson, Vice President, Ann Woebbiking, Secretary, and jerry Bau- man, Treasurer, we lived and loved our last year. Games, dances, name cards, worrying about the skip trip . . . and finally, Commencement. 123 +f'. '9' - ' fy? 'ai Mqggfmf 'A ffI . K ' L , li U ' of U j fl A! 7 .4 Y 1- .iwj 1,.
