S. 1943 In a few short years society will be listing you as a success or a failure, may you be high on the success list. What will determine your listing? Four influences will determine what happens to youg all four have been present most of your lives and will continue in the future. One is your home. You have felt the importance of that contribution enough that you have dedicated this book to your parents Parents take on varying aspects of influence at different periods of our lives, at eighteen it is normal to question Dad's mentality and then about twenty three we wonder how he learned so much in five short years. Second is your church. It is a natural thing to become active in your local churchg may this influence always be a part of your life. Third is the school. My sincere hope is that your school has equipped you, thus far, to be able to compete with others of your age and, as all of you know, I want you to acquire all the formal education it is possible for you to do within mental and economic limits. Fourth influence is you. All three of the above influences are helpless unless you are a good influence on you. Be your best is my sincere wish to each of you and may our assocations together be remembered pleasantly and one that will grow in the years ahead. The six are: Steve Fletcher, Carla Beth Henke, Neal Kuhn, Ruth Ann Kuhn, Audrey Pounds, and John Wagoner. The remainder of the beginning first grade was -- Jim Basham, Rudy Dietz, Robert Downey, Teddie Lanter, Janet Miller, Joan Miller, Wilma Miller, and Norman Nickel. We had a wonderful teacher, Mrs. Helen Gahimer. We neither gained nor lost anyone during our first year in school. Miss Hester was our second grade teacher. During this year, Bill Cox, Sherman Bane, Delbert Crisman, Wayne Crisman, George Russell, Gene Krammes, and Grace Barnard joined our class. Sherman Bane, Robert Downey, Joan Miller, Grace Barnard, and Teddie Lanter withdrew leaving seventeen members in our class. When we came back to school in the fall to begin our third grade, we were happy to find that Miss Hester was again our teacher. We gained Maxine Macy, Irma Emholt, Marvin Toll, and Philip Miller, and at the end of the year Marvin Toll withdrew. We were left with twenty members. H Our fourth grade teacher was Mrs. Bertha Conover. This year Bobby Christopher, Luanne McCord, Kenneth Sandefur withdrew. We end- ed the school year with twenty-two members. During our fifth grade, we were divided. Part of our class was in Mrs. Conover's room and the rest of our class was moved into Mrs. Lenore Himes' room. Marcia Weidner joined our class durin the summer and Bobby Christopher, Luanne McCord. Philip Miller, and Ethel Poynter withdrew during the year leaving nineteenmembers. Our sixth grade teacher was Mrs. Himes. We found that we neither gained nor lost anyone during this school year. We moved upstairs for our seventh grade and elected Mr. Mahin our sponsor. We began our eighth grade with four new members--Tom Rankin, Bill Stocklin, Betty French, and Lila Whittle, Miss Rampy was our sponsor. We had no withdrawals during this year. Lila Whittle withdrew during the summer so we began our ninth grade with twenty-one members. Philip Miller again joined our class Tom Rankin, Bill Stocklin, and Judy Winkler withdrew. Miss Rampy was again chosen our sponsor. During the summer, Marcia Weidner withdrew from our class. We lost five members during our tenth year. They were Rudy Dietz, Jim Basham, Wilma Miller, Janet Miller, and John Willey. At the beginning of the second semester, Grethel Hall and Tom Rankin Joined our class. Now, as seniors of Manilla School, we have a membership of fifteen. We elected Miss Miriam Eberhart sponsor and the following class officers -- President, Audrey Pounds, Vice-president, Steve t h Secretary Grethel Hall' and Treasurer, Carla Beth Henke. Fle c er, , , We have enjoyed our twelve years at school and are looking forward to th lass of 1956 our class trip and graduation. We are proud to be e c of the Manilla School. ASS PROPHECY In the year of 1976 I, Steve Fletcher, president of the Ford Motor Company, decided to visit my home town of Hanilla whose popu- lation is now three million people. I graduated from lanilla School in the Class of 56 . As I was driving to my hotel, I was stopped by a policeman in a dark blue Buick. The policeman was a former classmate, George Russell. He said that he figured being a policeman was cheaper than getting arrested all of the time, and lots more fun arresting other people. George said that Neal Kuhn owns a nightclub called nThe Pink Cloudn and that he now has a lovely wife and seven daughters. George said that Nea1's wife d1dn't like the farm so they compromised and bought the nightclub. I went to see Neal and his lovely family. He said the chief source of his income was from his chain of Booze Stills in the hills of Kentucky. Neal said that business had been bad since the Crisman Brothers, Delbert Jay and Wayne, were trying to undersell htm. As he understood it they were making the Wboozen from a new chemical called nPhil1aramseyn. I commented on the name and found that my classmate Philip Hiller, the underworld's most famous scientist, had perfected the chemical, and after much study5 henemed it after himself and our high school chemistry teacher. After talking to Neal, I went back to the hotel to spend the remainder of the evening. After sitting down in a comfortable chair, I decided I would read the evening paper. Gene Krammes' picture was on the front page. The paper said he was now the manager of the New York Yankees, and he had gotten into a fight with a fan because the fan frowned at him. The paper said that the fan was a nearly bald headed man who was Gene's principal in his Junior and Senior years. As I remember, his name was Gerald Carmony. As I read the society section, I recognized a picture. It was Irma Emholt shown with all twelve of her little sons. The paper said that besides caring for her husband Gil and their twelve boys, she also owned a hat shop whose slogan was WFor Hats That Fit Well, Co e to Irmabellen. After reading the paper, I turned on the television to watch the world's most famous television show staring the great Opera Singer Miss Carla Beth Henke. The show was marvelous. The next show was the 'The Big Pounds Circusn in which Audrey Pounds and her husband,Gerald, had the leading act. The act was throwing knives. Gerald throws knives at Audrey and she ducks them. I imagine this was rather nerve wrecking when she knew he was furious at her for spending too much money. Now I ask you, what's extravagant about buying a new Mink coat to wear over a bathing suit. On the late show was John 'Muscles' Wag- oner defending his title as 'Flyweight Boxing Champion of the Worldn. John lost the match, but he explained to the television audience that it was only because he d1dn't wear his genuine cowhide gloves with the best knockout record of any boxing gloves. The next morning, as I went out of my room, I almost fell over a scrubbing woman. To my surprise, it was Miss Miriam Eberhart scrubbing the hotel floors. She said that kids were getting too stupid to be taught anything and a teacher should get an easy job like scrubbing floors. After breakfast, I went swimming at Kuhn's Lake owned and oper- ated by Ruth Ann Kuhn. Ruth Ann said that she hired Grethel Hall as Chief Lifeguard and that Grethel had saved the life of Tom Rankin, the famous founder of the Lonely Hearts Club of lanilla. Ruth Ann said that Maxine lacy was teaching at the Hanilla School and her husband, Jim, was doing the housework and caring for their four sets of twins. Having had a wonderful day visiting all the high points of dear lanilla, I decided to return to the Ford lotor Company and dream of the wonderful years the Class of 1956 had in the lanilla School. Q7 SS' We, the Senior Class of 1956, of city of Manilla, County of Rush, and the State of Indiana, being of sound mind and memory, do hereby make, publish and declare 'this to be our last will and testament, hereby revoking any will or wills here- tofore made by us.
