w P 4 w Q 1 w 1 o THE X mes SQ GF PRESENTS CiT,TQ5?xF. F OREWORD Long Hours have been spent in trying to make this book a memorial to be treasured by all. We hope we have succeeded in depicting the events in which you have played an important role during the school year. Our success now depends upon the acceptance of this book by you, the student. The material for this book has been obtained from the events of ordinary school days and extracurricular activities that highlighted the year. We, the staff, proudly present with a friendly hand the 1959 edition of the Stiegel Rose. Editor CAROL REESE APPRECIATION We Wish to express our thanks to all who have made the publication of this book possible. TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN GIRLS' SPORTS BOYS' SPORTS WHO7S WHO ACTIVITIES ADS We, the Class of '59, dedicate this yearbook in memory of John Hollinger, a graduate of the Class of '54, because we feel that he was a splendid example for us to look up to. John not only stood very high scholastically in his class, but also took part in many other school activities. As this diligent worker went through school, his influence was felt through- out the student and faculty bodies. In August 1958, when John's life was taken in that fatal airplane crash, the Whole com- munity sympathized with his family and experienced with them the loss of one held in such high regard. So We should remember that We need more people like John to be aiding in the progress of our school and community. ln this yearbook we will try to portray some of the things members of the Class of ,5-9, like John, have accomplished by working together with their hearts and hands. JOHN CLYDE HOLLINGER But 0 for the touch of a vanished hand, And the sound of a voice that is still! Em f iiiiifff riff lu: lm ,QM mu W-M 4.- ,If When graduation day comes you will likely say, lt has come all too soon. This will be a normal reaction as you look back over your school years. The time spent in school will now appear to have been amazingly brief. Your formal education in June 1959 will be ended for many of you who do not contemplate post high school education. Whether you plan to go to college or not you will suddenly become aware of a startling fact--the fact that both time and opportunities slipped T away from you. This may bring you a feeling of remorse, but this will not recover any losses sus- tained. As seniors you possess the moral and mental ma- turity to look forward allowing your past to serve as a reminder of the value of time and the wisdom of grasping opportunities that shall appear henceforth. Now you will do well to make good use of your strength and abilities that can carry you into greater achievement and into happier days. You are, in fact, young adults who may assume the role of inspiring others who have not as yet reached the milestone of graduation. Again, your maturity has made you eligible to take your place in your community as a responsible and good citizen. You may already have acquired a job. This will be a new venture. Having shown yourself a worthy student in your high school days you will now play the role of a worthy employee giving proof to the success of your school life. You will be expected to think for yourself and to act courageously when confronted with problems and responsibilities. Whatever your lot may be, meet the challenge with determination and vigor. Your friends and your school will revere your efforts as you tackle the difficult, and, what is sometimes called the impossible. Plan for big things but remember that logic reminds us that small achievements are prerequisite to big ones. You will be rewarded with successes. At times you will be jolted by failures. Despite the reverses that inevitably will arise, you can win many a struggle and many a race by engaging your full strength and the courage of an indomitable spirit. Graduation should be a happy experience, a thrilling climax to pleasant associations. This is a good time to take a good, long, deliberate look into the future. The. school that had the pleasure of affording you an education, in turn will be honored by anything creditable that you may accomplish at home or any other area of service. The motto of a well known organiza- tion is, HService above Selff' May you find it possible to make it yours. V , My personal wish for each one of you, to the extent of the years of a full life time, is that you may enjoy good health, that your days may be filled with happiness, and that you may be prosperous in a worthy vocation or profession. Accept my heartiest congratulations for your reaching this coveted goal. Also, please accept our invitation to return to your Alma Mater whenever convenient to you. DR. H. G. BUCHER, Supervising Principal Manheim Central High School I0 The class of 1959 has once again set a record when in September, 114 seniors were enrolled in 'the Man- heim Central High School and it should also set a new record for the number of graduates in June. The future belongs to those with the best trained minds and skillsf, This statement from a contempo- rary writer presents a challenge to our nation. It is impossible for all of us to be in the above mentioned class. But those who have not taken full advantage of their opportunities in the past years will find it is still not too late to improve their talents so that they may meet and accept the ever increasing responsibilities that are confronting us on a local, national and inter- national level. Those who have met their recent obliga- tions to the best of their ability must continue with even greater zeal to further train their minds and develop additional skills. May I congratulate the staff for the preparation of another fine yearbook and each member of the class of 1959 for his achievement so far and wish all of you the greatest success in the future. D. W. WITMER, Principal Manheim Central High School It is a most pleasant assignment for me to offer my sincere congratulations to the graduating class of 1959. Life has been fun for most of you up to this point. Now, you are entering a stage of life that offers many challenges. These challenges will lead each of you into many different areas of endeavor. Work and more work will constitute your daily diet. I trust that your twelve years in the public schools of Manheim Central shall aid you tremendously in attaining what- ever goals or ambitions you have set up as a target. Again, congratulations and good luck to each and every member of the Class of 1959. R. A. WINTER FANTASY Q, H A L L U 2 E N D A N C E CLASS HISTORY ln the fall of 1953 we, the class of '59, stepped upon the first rung of our high school ladder. As seventh, eighth, and ninth graders we were looked upon as just those small, skinny, bothersome underclassmenf, However, finally in our Sophomore year we showed a little more superiority. We elected Tim Stormfeltz as our president, Tom Diehl as vice president, Dot Mather as secretary, Doris Clark as treasurer, and myself, Bev Snyder, as historian. This was the year in which we chose our class colors. After a long, but glorious debate, we decided that black and blue would reign as our class colors. Then the problem of picking a new, standard school ring was bestowed upon us. We accepted the chore more as an honor than a problem. We were proud that the ring we chose would reign for the next five years as the official M.C.H.S. school ring. Our Junior year was filled with many surprising and exciting events. We elected Rich Foellner as our president, Dave Denenberg as vice president, ,lean Bucher as secretary, and once again Doris Clark as treasurer. To our surprise our treasury was quite low. It needed a lot of fixing up if we were going to Washington, D. C. Under the guidance of Mr. Hollobaugh and Mrs. Showers we dived into the process of making money. However, we were not too successful. Our junior-senior play, Onions in the Stewf, yielded a small profit, as did our food sale and farm show stand. With the coming of the junior-senior prom we soon forgot our many problems. Again we set the pace of starting something new. For many, many years the Prom had been held in the school gym, but our class decided we didn't have enough money to spend on a nice prom in the gym. So, ideal-minded as we were, we held the first Prom in the history of M.C.H.S. outside of school at the Iris Club at Lancaster. This year we also ranked supreme in our assembly programs. Perhaps our most spectacular was our Minstrel Show. Then, as our Junior year was coming to a close, the faculty and our class voted for six people to be installed into the National Honor Society. They were Joann Metzler, Barry Haldeman, Thomas Diehl, Dorothy Mather, David Denenberg, and Richard Foellner. After these four years of studying and goofing offi' we reached the last and final rung of our high school ladder. Again we elected Rich Foellner as president, Tim Stormfeltz as vice president, Jean Bucher as secretary, Doris Clark as treasurer, and me as historian. Again we were met with the problem of money. We started our fairly well. The profits from our Senior Stand were good. Then with the help of the juniors we put on the play, Growing Pains, which in itself was a success. With the continuous efforts of Mr. Hollobaugh 'and Mrs. Smith, our advisors, we made it to Washington, D. C. As we thought back upon our high school days, our commencement day finally arrived. We stood before our friends as proud Seniors. While each of us received his diploma, we knew we would never forget both the good and the bad times of our past school years. But each of us secretly hoped that the faculty and administration would remember only our good deeds and be proud of the class of ,59.
