Again, as you reflect upon your school experiences that are now a part of history, you may have mingled feelings of regret and gladness. Possibly the regrets that you have come as a result of recognizing that you might have used your time more profitably and might have taken advantage of many opportunities that were yours for the taking. You are mature enough now to know that one does not thrive upon regrets. You can move ahead on the basis of the achievements, understanding, and vision that you now have. Let the shortcomings of the past be reminders of the urgency of making your time, energy, and abilities count for growth in service ta fellowmen. It is up to you now to assume the role of inspiring others. Your maturity affords you the power to think independently and to take the place of a responsible adult in a society of good citizens. You should now be able to accept the challenge of the iob you seek. Again the demands that advanced training place upon you, should you choose to prepare for a field of interest that requires this type of training, call forth the powers that you have developed in your school life. Plan for something big or great but never lose sight of the fact that big things follow successes in dealing with small endeavors, You will not have successes only but there will be failures to face as well. One may lose a battle occasionally and still win the struggle. Graduation may well mark a significant beginning for you in the test of your strength, courage, and determination. Whatever your experience, may your behavior reflect honor upon the institution that made you what you are. So please accept my best wishes for health, happiness, and prosperity together with my heartiest con- gratulations on your achievement. As Alumni of Manheim Central High School may you find it convenient and enioyable to return often to visit your Alma Mater. DR. HENRY BUCHER 10 The Class of I958 is indeed fortunate to be graduating in a geo-physical year studded with scientific advances that will change our entire pattern of life. Horizons contemplated but not expected are now ci reality. Challenges never dreamed of are now before you. It is sincerely hoped that the twelve years that you have spent in our schools will aid you in meeting these new challenges. II have known most of you personally and, therefore, feel a personal satisfaction in seeing you graduate from Manheim Central. On behalf of my co-workers, I wish you every success in the future. It is our hope that the education you have re- ceived will, in some small way, aid you in attaining whatever success you seek in life. ROBERT A. WEITZEL ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL The class of I958 set a record when last September IIO stu- dents entered the senior class of Manheim Central High School, and it should also set a record as being the first class in the history of the school to have more than IOO graduates. Upon graduation many members of the class will conclude their formal education, while many others, and we trust a larger percentage than ever, will continue in higher institutions of learning. In whichever group you will be, may I urge you to do your best as you are confronted with life's ever increasing problems. The degree to which you meet the challenges that face you after graduation will determine to what extent society will profit because of your efforts. May I congratulate the staff for the preparation of another fine yearbook and the entire Class of 1958 for their achieve- ments so far and wish all of you the greatest success in the future. D. W. Class History When the class of '58 entered M.C.H.S., we were met with one of the greatest tasks in our life-to receive a basic education. We were proud of our school building, since a recent addition had been added to accommodate more pupils. A larger building called for more instructors in fundamental education, teachers. We got to know them all, one way or another. Our first two years gave us some idea of what would be expected later on. ln the year i955, we were iust jolly freshmen starting on the upgrade. Wilbur Nauman was elected president, Bradley Loercher, vice- president, Janice Koser, secretary, and Barry Haldeman, treasurer. We presented two class assemblies and began the escapade of selling writing paper. We're sorry to say that this was one of our downfalls. After a summer vacation, we returned as shining angels, all ready to enter our senior high years. We got off to a good start. James Weaver was elected to the position of class president, Gerald Greiner, vice- president, Peggy Witmer, secretary, and it was decided to keep the same treasurer, Barry Haldeman. At our second class meeting, we decided that black and white should reign as our class colors. lt will be interesting to note that in this year, we took an about face on school rings. All other classes before us had to be content with the same old school ring, but not us. We decided that it was time for a change. Plans for a class ring were drawn up and presented to a iewelry company for completion. We must say that we were rather proud of our class rings. Our iunior year was a year of many events. To lead us on, we chose .lay Ruhl as our class president, Kenneth Shearer, vice-president, Janet Witmer, secretary, and Barry Haldeman, treasurer. It was also the year in which to prepare for our junior-senior prom, Oriental Enchantment. Glinda Atkinson was chosen to head the affair. We got busy in plenty of time. Oh! What a time at those prom meetings! Our class treasury wasn't so plump after that, it needed to be hlled. We started an adventure to sell Katherine Beiche candy. It was a big success! But still the candy wouIdn'1 foot the bill alone. Fortunately it was the year to present a iunior-senior play. The play Dear Ruth, was a smash! Several iuniors held leading roles. Among the cast we find such names as, Janice Koser, Sandy Stormfeltz, James Weaver, Fred Anderson, Barbara Dissinger, and David Brian. Class dues was another matter with which we had to contend. The class voted that one dollar ought to be satisfactory. Things were looking brighter. We were bound to be able to ride in style to Washington! Near the end of the year, the faculty and our class chose six people to be installed in the National Honor Society. These six were Betty Miller, Connie Conrad, Tasker Navascues, Linda Hollinger, Virginia Heistand, and Eleanor Hummer. This is the year, l958, which we will always be able to look back to with pride-Our Senior Year. We were going to make it a year of which we and our school could be proud of us and our achievements. We got right to work and elected Stanley Gibble as our president, Kenneth Shearer, vice-president, Fay Tshudy, secretary, Barry Haldeman, treasurer, and of course myself, Bradley Loercher, historian. l believe that it would only be fitting and proper that our class pay some tribute at this point to our advisors, especially one who has been with us throughout our entire school days-Mr. Stoner. We immediately got to work with the opening of the football season. We must admit that they did a remarkable iob this season. Credit for their success should be given to Fred Anderson and Larry Becker, Dave Brian, Tom Obetz, Rock Ruhl, Mike Reed, James Weaver, the present day juniors on the team, and, of course, the coaches. The senior stand yielded a profit because of the good turnout which we had at our games. The combined effort of the iuniors and seniors produced the hilarious play, Onions in the Stew. Our class was amply represented in the actors as well as in the production crew. Again we turned our attention to the selling of Katherine Beich candy. The sales again yielded a profit. Finally, our Commencement Day approaches. lt is the day when every bit of our hard work and struggle is climaxed. The day when we realize we have reached our first goal, graduation. As we have looked back on these past four years, we shall always remember the companionship we had together as one class. The class of nineteen hundred and fifty-eight. 41 Class Prophecy The other day we went to a fortune teller to see what she had in store for the class of '58. This is what she told us as she looked into her magic crystal ball, Overseas in France are our Navy men Larry Becker, Melvin Graham, Carl Moll, Jan Morinchin, Tom Obetz, and Eugene Wright. They are talking to Waves, Janet Witmer and Barbara Becker. ln a small town, not too far away, is our Army Lieutenant, Stanley Gibble, giving orders to Privates Leroy Knight, James Musser, Larry Doyle, and Ken Christ. Then, on the other side of the ocean is our Air Force. We see our Air Force receptionist, Mary Lou Reincke, greeting our flying instructor, Harold Buch, who is getting ready for his first class which is composed of Michael Bleyer, Larry Fry, John Brosey, Paul Gantz, Dale Fetter, and Bernard Gilbert. We ask the fortune teller to tell us more. She tells us that she sees an office and work, ing in that office are many of our class. The receptionist, Joyce Gish, is saying Good morning, to the executive, Richard Adair. He greets his private secretary, Marion Em- erick. Richard then asks his A-l stenographer, Mary Ann Shreiner, to take some dicta- tion. Next, we see our A-l Typist, Elaine Barto, helping one of the newer typists, Sylvia Ginder. Joan Michael, Priscilla Bucher, and Wilbur Oberholtzer, top accountants, are busy posting, Other office workers are Barbara Dissinger, Nancy Hostetter, Valerie Keech, Betty Miller, Dorothy Ann Nissley, Gloria Shenk, Judy Snavely, Connie Conrad, Jean Gifford, Reba GroFf, Nancy Hoffer, Shirley Miller, Elaine Moyer, Mary Ann Ruhl, Fred Anderson, Ardyth Kramer, Shirley Nauman, Blanche Peiffer, and Bernice Zeamer. Our experienced IBM operators in Richard's office are James Fry, Virginia Wilkinson, Charles Oberholtzer, and Sandra Shank. Our fortune teller shows us next, a picture of a factory where we see Robert Greiner, Lee Shreiner, Norman Theal, John Winters, Marian Kauffman, Treba Ruhl, and Carl Shelly. Suddenly, one of the big machines falls on Bob. The factory nurse, Shelby Groff, calls the hospital. After arriving at the hospital, Bob is taken care of by the head nurse, Virginia Heistand. During his stay, Bob is visited by several of his old school friends, They include Joe Sharp, minister, Earl Zern, TV mechanic, Tasker Navascues and Jim Weaver, college students, Dale Ogle, draftsman, and Michael Reed, psychologist. Bob also sees nurses Pauline Carpenter, Marion Eby, Ruth Grossman, Laura Nauman, Elsie Shank, Barbara Sprecher, Eileen Haldeman, and Nancy Ginder. Next, our fortune teller tells us about a local gas station that is operated by our me- chanics, Ken Stauffer, Glenn Fahnestock, and Glenn Shonk. Ken, who owns the station, tells us that most of his customers are local farmers, such as Ken Bushong, Dick Hurst, Marlin Cassel, Bob Graybill, Gerry Greiner, and Barry Haldeman. Housewives who get their cars repaired there are, Violet Geib, Dotty Ruhl, Esther Shenberger, and Kay Gainer. Now our picture shows us our Alma Mater where we see some of the new teachers, Mary Grace Brubaker, Linda Hollinger, Glinda Atkinson, and Sandra Stormfeltz, who tells us that she gets her hair done at the local beauty salon which is run by Dixie Frank, Judy McCoy, and Verdella Zurin. Artists, Fay Tshudy and Harry Heagy, are painting a scene, composed of a building designed by contractors Abner Zimmerman, David Brian, and Jay Ruhl, and beautiful trees planted by Ken Shearer and Charles Ruhl. As our picture begins to fade we see Eleanor Hummer, Bradley Loercher, and Merwyn Shonk working in an electronics plant, Donna Fahnestock and Mary Frey as social workers, and Janice Koser and Beverly Carpenter as medical secretaries. The picture has faded completely so we shall wait for time to tell if it is true, 42 Last Will and Testament KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS!
