ADMINISTRATION MR BURGARD lt has been my privilege to have served in the public schools in this community for quite a number of years. Many changes have taken place during this time, including the merging of districts, the increased enrollments, the institution of new curricula, and erection of new buildings and the introduction of numerous activities for pupil participation. Several years ago the publishing of a yearbook was added to the activities. In this publication the members of the staff attempt to depict the life of the school which should be of interest to everyone not only at the time of graduation, but in future years. The items enumerated over a period of years indicate progress and should be a determining factor to better prepare the youth to take their place in society. ln view of the fact that I am retiring at the end of the current year, I wish to congratulate the members of the staff as well as the members of the graduating class upon achieving their goal and sincerely trust they will have a successful future. I also hope that the classes in the future will always strive to do a better iob than the preceding classes. School Board Members, left to right: Roy Miller, Charles Kauffman, Ivan Wittel, Henry Dohner, Ammon Shelly, Nelson Hershey, H. C. Burgard, Lewis Williams.

With great pride we, the Class of 1956, dedicate this year- book to our supervising principal, Mr. H. C. Burgard. Mr. Burgard began his career in Manheim in 1920, when he served as teacher and supervising principal. Since that time, the school system has been growing and progressing steadily under his capable leadership and administration. As we bring our high school education to a close, Mr. H. C. Burgard is also terminating his career as supervising principal of Manheim Central High School. When he retires, he will leave behind him many visible marks of his achievements-new school buildings, expanded courses of study, and increased opportunities. For his untiring efforts to give to us the best that could be had, we, the class of l956, express our sincere gratitude.

When the first yearbook was published just four short years ago by the senior class of our High School, the present staff mem- bers gave Iittle thought to the fact that they too soon would be- come involved in the preparation of another volume which will record for the future the accomplishments of all fellow students during the current school term. I wish to congratulate the staff and the entire class for their splendid production. Going through some correspondence of several years ago I came across a letter from a former graduate. I wonder if the author will recognize it. Among other things it contained the following: TeII the students for me that they should enjoy their high school days even if their work seems hard. No matter how tough the going gets, Manheim students should be thankful that they have a good high school to attend. I am proud to say that I am a graduate of Manheim High School. You have achieved the first goal-that of graduation-and we trust that you have enjoyed the fun and profited by the hard work encountered along the way. But graduation presents you with a challenge to display those attributes of scholarship and character which have been instilled in you in order that you may make your proper contribution to society. May I congratulate the graduateslof the class of 1956 and wish each one of you the greatest success in the future. D. W. WITMER, Principal Graduation from high school should give each and everyone of you a tremendous sense of accomplishments. Some of you will go on with your education, others train for professions, and many of you will enter industry or the armed service. In whatever pursuit of life you follow, the education that you received at Man- heim Central should prove to be of inestimable value. As one who has known many of you for the last ten years and the rest for the past four years, I want to wish every member of the graduating class success and happiness. MR. WEITZEL, Assistant Principal
