A silhouette, represented by a picture of a friend, a teacher, or a group is presented to the reader who uses that as a means of recalling what he did when he was with that friend, teacher, or group. Therefore, we of the yeafbook staff proudly present a Silhouette of the 1954-55 term at Manheim Central High School. We, and all those who aided us, have made a sincere effort to equal the examples set by the two previous editions of the Steigel Rose. We hope that this book will be worthy of a place beside its predecessors. The Staff book theme. Silhouettes are beautiful in that they are simple, JUCHS l I Q S 14:5-i :U We, the class of 1955, dedicate this yearbook to Henry c'Hank Cassel, a member of the junior class. Before 'cHank underwent a spinal operation he was active in athletics and was awarded three chix baseball trophies. Unable to attend classes since October l953, uHank neverthe- less has maintained an interest in school activities and has dis- played a cheerful, courageous attitude which should serve as an example to all of us. THE ADMINISTRATION 1 I Foreground: Horace Martin, Jr., Nelson Hershey, .lohn S. Miller, Ivan M. Wittel. Background: Norman B. Kready, Daniel G. Haldeman, Ammon E. Shelly, Louis T. Williams, Roy H. Miller. Absent: Charles Kauffman, Lloyd R. Swarr. The members of the class of 1955 have worked hard in compiling the interesting information which is found in the yearbook. I believe that it will give everyone a splendid idea concerning the all around program in your high school and should be a challenge to future classes to try always to make improvements. In order for a school to function efficiently, the co- operation of the board of directors, faculty, student body and the community is very essential. It is always a sat- isfaction to see the graduates enter various occupations and become successful in their respective activities. I wish to congratulate the members of the graduating class in achieving their goal in secondary education and also to commend the parents and faculty for making this possible. Whatever your future endeavors may be, success may only be attained through your own efforts. H. C. Burgard Supervising Principal The staff for this yearbook, the third to be published by a senior class of Manheim Central High School, has labored hard ai d long to produce this record of the accomplishments of all the students during the current school term. l should like to congratulate the members and the class for their fine product. One of the misfortunes of the era in which you are living is that many people have cultivated the idea that the world or their immediate society owes them a living with no obligation on their part. Our country was not founded on such a philos- ophy and cannot long endure unless we return to the idea that each person must make his contribution to society. Your staff has met the challenge presented to it to equal or surpass the results of previous classes. In the same manner each member of your class must meet squarely the issues that will confront him after graduation in order that the com- munity and society as a whole will be a better place in which to live. May I congratulate the members of the class of 1955 on your achievements so far and wish you the greatest of success in the future. Many High School Seniors look back on their school days as an experience of too much discipline, regimentation, and hard work. Actually, most of the 2160 days of your total school life were happy days. At the same time, however, you have been building a foundation for all future endeavor. We hope and trust that the school has not failed you in helping. Com- pleting this edifice rests squarely on your shoulders. On behalf of the faculty, I wish to extend heartiest con- gratulations on your graduation and wish you every success in the years to come. Robert A. Weitzel Assistant Principal D. W. With such a meaning, it is especially appropriate that this emblem should decorate the cover of the third publication of the Stiegel Rose. Judge this book by its cover. In witness whereof, we have here unto set our hands and seals this first day of March in the year of our Lord, Nineteen Hundred Fifty-Five. THE CLASS OF 1955 OF MCHS Witnessed by: CHARLES WITTEL President CAROLF. BUCH Secretary CLASS PROPHEC Y Did you ever hear of the futurescope? Well, neither did we, but let's pretend that we have just invented such an instrument. With only a flick of the wrist we can see into the future, Ready? Let's try it. At first we see only a blur of colors. Ah! the picturels becoming clearer. We see Marlin Becker, Reid Graybill, Jere Longenecker, and Ronald Winters in their blue Navy uniformsg Richard Geiman, Albert Vogel, and Robert Hershey, wearing Army colors, while Fred Fry, Frank Funk and Kenneth Sprecher are wearing the Air Force insignia. Say, that commanding officer looks familiar. Why, he's .lack Witmer, of the United States Marines! Next, we sight a beautiful office building. Although Russel Achey isn't finished painting it, we can tell the exterior will be baby blue. Inside this building we find three busy receptionists, Yvonne Worley, Penny Shirk and Elizabeth Hershey. Working as secretaries are Jean Messick, Ruth Sangrey, Lorraine Grube, Diana Gordon, Margaret Shank, Virginia Wright, Gloria Gish, Dorothy Rambler and Darlene Bucher. Over by the water fountain, secretaries Shirley Faus, Patsy Bashore, Shirley Witmer, Mary Jane Hummer, Grace Rohrer, Arlene Eshleman, .lanet Shockley, and Deloris Suter are discussing the new, efficient bookkeeping system which Clyde Tshudy has devised. Only a few feet away from the office building is the Supernational bank. Here Rosene Longenecker, a teller, is kept busy cashing only 31,000,000 checks. As we walk down the street we see Madam's Beauty Shoppe, which is owned and operated by three former M.C.H.S. graduates, Phyllis Irvin, Jane Habecker, and Ethel Shaffer. In that large Acme store across the street, Bernard Geib, the manager, is waiting on Barbara Frey, Kathryn Ruhl and Doris Weaver, while housewives Sylvia Kulp, Peggy Witman, Velva Burkholdcr and Ethel Shelly are busily comparing food prices. Does that sign say Smith's Hobby Shop?,' That's right and Larry Smith, the owner, even has branches in Tokyo, Moscow, and Greenland. Working in his local store are Gladys Shonk and Rosalee Kreider. Now we seem to be in a hospital and walking toward us are some nurses and nurses' aides including Leah Keller, Carol Ann Rohrer, Doris Bruckhart, and Patricia Fahnestock. Cynthia King, head nurse, tells us about Dr. Horace Mai-tin's latest successful operation. In another section of the hospital Annetta Kover and Darlene Hershey are taking care of crippled children while Leslie Hackman is working as an X-ray technician. However, our attention is diverted by a Cadillac convertible parked in a nearby gas station. There's the owner, Eugene Gibble, talking to mechanics Robert Weachter, Fred Heistand and William Kauffman. Woosh, there goes Wilbur Shenk driving a feed truck. He is probably delivering feed to Melvin Graybillls huge dairy farm. Last, we travel to the schools of the nation. Here we find several elementary teachers including Hettie Peters, Elizabeth Shearer, and Catherine Weaver. ln the art department, teachers LaRue Hahn and Mary Alice Galebach are looking at a magazine advertisement drawn by Carole Buch, a commercial artist. Joyce Metzler is teaching high school seniors and, in a nearby room, Jean Foellner is directing a 150-voice glee club. Ronald Funk is now giving private clarinet lessons. Elsieanna Henry is teaching physical education. In talking to her we learn that Priscilla Hunter is doing social work, Barbara Kreider is working for her master's degree, and Letty Achey is a professor at Middleberry College. Charles Wittel is a forestry expert, .lim Bush is a newspaper editor, and Fred Longenecker is manager of the largest hard- ware store in the world. Our two professionals Robert Kauffman and Carol Jenkins are opening in a play on Broadway. Now the pictures are fading. Only time can tell if the futurescope was accurate in its predictions. 1 QE' df I 1 i 4 if ig' f 'Q I M ' -TMA! 'Q ry In P WK vt. . M, A x1l7A . , O, 'K fm I .1 f 1 M TP , M-fl Yi- h K., , . . The first two years the girls were taught the fundamentals and by 1943 they were ready to join the county league. The Baronetts went into league competition as a clark-horse, but came out victorious with an undefeated championship team. During this year they scored twenty-two goals against the opponents' two. In 1944, the team had to be rebuilt since most of the championship team had graduated. This year they went without a win. But,in 1945 their work was repaid by another undefeated championship team. During this year they scored the highest number of goals against one opponent in the history of hockey in Lancaster County. They beat Mount Joy 16-0. Manheim High, as it was called then, occupied third place in the county league in 1946. This year the girls were coached by Miss Mary Angstadt since Miss Auxer had a year's leave of absence. As the 1947 season rolled around, the girls, again proving to be a credit to their school. proceeded to have another outstanding team. This year there were two sections in the county and a play-off game between the two sections was necessary. ln this contest Manheim lost a 2-1 decision to Manheim Township. The 1948 team again pushed forward and landed in second place, winning five, losing two and tying one. Championship honors again were bestowed to the Baronetts in 1949 by com- pleting the season undefeated. Second place was occupied in 1950 by the girls from Manheim since they won three, lost two and tied two. ln 1951 the team landed in third place. This was the last year Miss Auxer coached the team. Her fine record as a coach is proven by producing three undefeated championship teams in seven years. Whether it was a championship team or a team that landed on the bottom of the league, the girls were always coached to display the best sportsmanship and to play to win at all times. The next year. which was 1952, the Baronetts again finished in third place. This year the girls were coached by Miss ,Ioan Snader fMrs. Byron Sprockl. Miss Marjorie Hodgkins was appointed coach in 1953. That year the girls com- pleted the season in second place. They duplicated that record again this year by finishing the season in second place. With six varsity members returning to the team in 1955, the Baronetts should be able to match or even better the 1954 record. 1954 SCORES Manheim Opponent 1 'Lititz ....,.................. .....,...,.. 0 1 East Hempfield ..... ....... . 1 1 East Donegal ..... ..,,.... 0 O Elizabethtown ...... ,...... . 2 0 Elizabethtown ......... ...,.,,,.,. . 4 1 East Hempfield ............................ .......,..,,... 1 0 East Donegal .....................,.............. 1 ...... .1 'Denotes non-league games First row: C.
