For everyone there is some special ability that he she can do particularly well. Talents here at Manhattanville are quite diverse. They range from creating works of art to creating works of literature, from throwing parties to throwing curve balls, and from leading club meetings to leading roles on stage. This, of course, is not the end of the list; Manhattanville is gifted with many talented musicians, dancers, and athletes. Sometimes, however, our talents are not so obvious. It is a talent to be able to quickly memorize notes for an exam, for example. It’s also a talent to be able to comfort someone else in times of need. We can appreciate the fact that everyone is unique. Through sharing our many talents, we learn more about ourselves, as well as those around us. Genevieve M. Lopez There are a few words that defy definition. Friendship is one. It has no meaning, or it has a thousand. It has a language all its own, the only language not offered in any college course catalog. Even so, nothing we’ve learned in our years here is more important. Poor Impersonations Allow me to take your hat and wear it crooked, hiding my eyes, like you do. Let me take your shoes, and try to walk in your footsteps. They’re too big, they’ll flop, but no matter. I’ll waddle, Charlie Chaplin style. Stay still, I want to memorize your face. ’till I can frown your pain and smile your joy. Allow me to dance your dance, to sing your song. Let me listen ’till I get the beat right. It’s no use, I’ll never be you. Nonetheless, I like the outfit. Think back to the summers when you were small. Did you wear Osh-Kosh overalls? Did you wish on the stars? Remember? How you’d pick the brightest star, And screw your eyes tight shut, to trap the wishes in, so they couldn’t spill out and get lost. I remember those nights. There must have been a time when I wished with open eyes. ’Cause for a long time I stopped dreaming. Stopped looking for the stars. So many years of cloudy summer nights And then there you were, laughing. You might as well have been wearing Osh- Kosh overalls. ’Cause you gave it all back to me. Hide and seek, and lightning bugs. And I think I see a star to wish on shining somewhere in your eyes. Never a Stranger Take my soul in your hands If only for this moment. Your eyes speak of foreign lands. I’ll follow, if you show me the way. Sing my song in your heart. I know you, you’re my harmony. Don’t speak, just let the music start and the dream’ll live another day. Poems by Amie Stainken So go now, if you need to. You’ll never be a stranger. This song is me, alive in you. Sing soft, and I’ll be there. 6 P$V p?. ' reedom to be whoever we choose to be is perhaps the greatest gift we will have when we leave Manhattanville. Did you ever think of what it would be like to be told what and when to study, who to be friends with, or what kind of activities to participate in? For most of us, the idea is inconceivable. We often take for granted the most valuable gift we have: the gift of freedom. In the last four years we have learned what freedom truly means. The opportunities Manhattanville has provided us with are endless: we could choose to study abroad in England for a semester, take a photography course even if biology was our major, or even run on the Quad during a snowstorm. These opportunities have provided us with an awareness of what we can do with our lives and our talents. The decision to be successful in a sport or a major area of study was left entirely to us. Through the years we learned that the road to excellence was not an easy one, but having the freedom to find that road made the search a little bit easier. Manhattanville provided an opportunity for us to use our freedom in exploring clubs, student government positions, and even off- campus internships. When we remember Manhattanville years from now, let us not forget the freedom we had to laugh, to cry, to be ourselves. Elizabeth A. Contegni . WSBi 12 -.a5gy ,. Manhattanville College may be a small college, however, it was a pleasant surprise to see students that you thought had graduated last year were actually in your own class. The cheerful atmosphere of seniors discussing their thesis topics and future plans was enhanced by drinks and h’ors d’oeuvres. The senior class gathering was definitely a successful way to begin the 1986-87 academic year. Milena Frieden From the sounds of hushed voices, clinking glasses and popping champagne bottles, which were drifting out of the West Room, it was as if we were walking into some elegant, presidential reception. As we entered, lo and behold, there be¬ fore us was the senior class, and friends, enjoying an elegant Sunday brunch. The West Room was wonderfully set up and brilliantly lit by a late-morning sun blazing through the French doors. Everyone was dressed accordingly and looked respec¬ tively handsome. In the middle of the room was a long table with a food spread which included fresh rolls, flaky crois¬ sants, jellies, cheeses, eggs benedict and quiche lorraine. It was a sight to see. While we ate and enjoyed each other’s presence, some of our classmates shared their special talents. Andrea Sgarlato, a scholar-music major, played a wonderful repretoire on the piano that complement¬ ed the mood of the event. With great pride we listened and enjoyed her music, which stirred a string of reflections on the past four years. We’ve come a long way. Susan Ryan Question: What is your advise to incoming freshmen? — Buy a case of Molsen because they wil need it. Edward E. Callahan — Find an activity you like on campus and make it yours. Michael S. Bennett — Self-discipline, self-respect, and a little selfishness are important. Lizz Squires — Enjoy Robert Stanley — These are the best years and the best friends you will ever have. Take advantage of them and, most importantly, appreciate them. Susan Ryan fMfaatti . _ 77 Orientation 1986 On August 29, 1986, over 250 freshmen unpacked tons of personal possessions in front of Spellman Hall, which rapidly be¬ came their new home. The first week of freshman year is interesting and exciting, but can also be frightening for it is the first time away from home for many of the stu¬ dents. Whether they come from the sur¬ rounding tri-state area or another country, they have to adapt to new surrounding, make new friends, and start classes. Orientation provides the freshmen with everything from fun and enjoyable events, which puts them at ease and makes them feel that they are a part of this close com¬ munity, to vital information they need to survive the trials and tribulations here at the ’Ville. This year’s events included the RA SA Show, Playfair, the Beach Party, the Faculty Jazz Brunch, the Delta House Par¬ ty, and the SA Olympics. There were also speeches meetings and Preceptorial group meetings. None of this would have been possible without the time, effort, and talent of the six-member Orientation Board and the upperclassmen, many of whom had been freshmen just last year, who organized and planned Orientation ’86. As time goes by, the freshmen encounter numerous ob¬ stacles. They meet these challenges and go on to become the welcoming committee for the future freshmen. Primarily, the dorms are our second homes. Each dorm is our “home away from home.” The people who live next door and down the hall are not merely our neighbors; they are our family. Some of them are our best friends. The dorm residents are the people with whom we study and work. They are our constant companions. Common activities include shopping, decorating, confiding, and socializing with each other. Our roommates, suitemates, and bathmates are essential for our survival during the college years. It is together that we survive Flik, dance until dawn, and get through all of the other “crisis” of college life. Dorm life, in all of its insanity and seriousness, provides a common link between the students. We develop strong bonds with each other which help us through thick and thin. There is a special bond created which will ensure that our memories of Dammann, Founders, Spellman, and Tenney will last for many years after graduation. Those closer to their studies tend to frequent the library and take advantage of its stored information. The students’ faculty advisors help them to plot out a course of study for the upcoming semesters, as well as provide guidance in choosing a major and possible career. Of course, the Portfolio system ensures that Manhattanville’s five areas of discipline are fulfilled, in addition to helping the students organize their academic life at the ’Ville. Genevieve M. Lopez Interact Academics INTERACT (Internships for Action, Community and Training) provides an opportunity for a few specially selected Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors to receive payment for internships related to their career goals in non-profit organizations. As an integral part of Manhattanville’s mission of service to society, INTERACT serves both the community and the students in several ways. — students provide valuable assistance to non-profit organizations — students develop career-related professional skills and develop a commitment to community service. — students earn 3 academic credits — helps students offset some of their college expenses. Students will be selected on a merit basis for this program. To be considered for the INTERACT, a student must: — be a Sophomore, Junior or Senior with a grade point average of 3.2 or above — receive the recommendation of a faculty member — be able to work from 10 to 20 hours per week — be able to arrange course credit with a faculty sponsor. , ' Vi.♦« • J _ . ; : : : : T te ;; ; • . „v,v r . .• j;: ; . Whether it is in England, France, Italy, Spain, or Austria, exposure to a foreign culture always presents a new challenge. Manhattanville offers students the opportunity to study in virtually any country imaginable. It is important to realize that studying abroad is not merely being exposed to new academic surroundings. Actually, the learning experience only begins in the classroom. Afternoon tea, lunch at a sidewalk cafe, and a walk along the Champs Elysee, are only a few ways in which people of various cultures relax and meet people. Living among people from another country is the best way to learn about and understand their culture. Milena Frieden m pi ■B r 1 .., 3 sJ ' i f ' I I. Nmt ni rhi ht 25. I 86 ab 20 00 Uhr 0m© Vp nty.. These parties provide an opportunity for the students to dance and spend some relaxing time talking to their friends. East Room parties must be inventive to have successful tur¬ nouts. SPB coordinates each of the parties around a different theme. Some past themes have included Club ’Ville and Studio ’Ville. The decorations are always appropriate to the respective theme. SPB also tries to get well-known disc jockeys and bands to play at these parties. The live entertainment is frequently en¬ hanced by smoke and bubbles, which fill the East Room. The East Room parties provide on-campus relaxation and good- natured fun and enjoyment for those who attend. Christina Vassilas On Oct. 7, 1986, Student Government sponsored a party to officially welcome Joe Tolliver and Eileen Mullady. Faculty, administration and students joined for ice cream, cake and refreshments. The highlight of the evening occurred when a clown arrived to entertain the new Deans. Laughter, excitement and anticipation filled the West Room as we celebrated this special occasion. Liz Rubin Student Gov’t President WELCOME! IT HAPPENED THIS YEAR ALSO IN THE CAF — Another addition to the cafeteria this year was John Gorski, dressed in blue and wearing a “special secu¬ rity” badge. Known to all as “the Traypolice,” he crosses from one end of the caf to another seeking out those who leave their trays un-bussed. VISITORS TO OUR CAMPUS Dr. Ross Gandy, professor, author, came to Manhat- tanville to talk about Marxism and Marxist govern¬ ments. He dealt more specifically with the govern¬ ments of Mexico and Centra America. Dr. Gandy was one of several guest lecturers who was invited to Man- hattanville. Other guest speakers of the past year in¬ clude Carlos Manuel Rojas, who discussed Costa Ri¬ ca’s foreign policy with its Central American neigh¬ bors, and Dr. Joshua Nkomo. Dr. Nkomo was a member of Zimbabwe’s Parliament, and he spoke as part of an effort to bring consciousness to students about the conflict in South Africa. REALLY QUITTING, OR JUST FOR THE DAY? Once again it was time for the Great American Smoke-Out, and once again Manhattanville students eagerly participat¬ ed. Some put their butts aside for 24 hours, but many students this year decided to “kick the habit” once and for all. NOW YOU DON’T HAVE TO TRAVEL EAR TO SEE SOME GREAT SHOWS Beginning this past fall the Manhattanville library offered a new service to the students: video rental. Students could either sit in the library to see a popular movie, or take a movie out overnight for viewing. THE EMERGENCE OF THE UNDER¬ GROUND Many students this past fall were surprised to have a stapled pile of papers handed to them as they sat in classrooms or walked down the hall. Upon closer examination the bundle proved to be the first issue of Scopein (mean¬ ing “to see”), Manhattanville’s first under¬ ground newspaper. The reaction to Scopein was either very positive, very negative, or a mixture of both. Whatever the reaction, what is important is that no one who read the paper was not stirred to some emotion. The paper was printed in order to inform the students of “what was really going on.” Future issues? We will see. TWO NEW FACES: SOON TO BE FAMILIAR TO ALL Joining the administrative staff of Manhattan¬ ville this past year were Deans Joseph Tolliver and Eileen Mullady. The new deans, of stu¬ dents and studies, were enthusiastically wel¬ comed by both students and faculty. Tolliver and Mullady soon became actively involved in the life of the campus. Welcome aboard! METS FEVER QUICKLY FOLLOWED BY CHEERS FOR THE GIANTS N.Y. sports fans could not have been happier this year as the Mets first picked up the pen¬ nant and then went on to win the World Series. A short two months later the Giants were victorious at the Superbowl. Manhattanville fans raed through the dorms celebrating their teams’ victories. • ' ■ October 31, 1986 was not just an ordinary Halloween night filled with spooks and trick-or-treating; it was an evening filled with dancing and romance. It was the night of the Fall Formal. SPB appropriately adorned the castle with cobwebs, and mimes and magicians and a fire juggler entertained those watching. Live music was provided in the French Parlor by Joe d’Elia and the All Stars, and for those who enjoy more popular tunes, there was a D.J. in the West Room. Fashions ranged from the traditional tuxedo and gown to green face and vampires, keeping with the Halloween spirit. No matter what people wore, whether they came to dance or just to enjoy an evening out with friends, those present must certainly agree that this year’s Fall Formal was quite a success. Genevieve M. Lopez I The Library In all the years you attend Manhattanville, you will, at least once, enter those glass doors and find yourself surrounded by books. They are everywhere; they are in the library. Each student views the library differently. Some feel that it is a foreign place that they are required to enter once. Others make the library their home. I don’t know how many times people have gone into the library, found a comfortable chair, worked, dozed, then worked again. The library is a place that allows you to study, as well as meet new and old friends. Some go to the library to get away from their friends so as to study for a big exam or to write a term paper. Others go there in order to relax. It is within this six-stacked building that wonderful as well as sad stories are passed among friends. The library is a part of Manhattanville, and should not go unnoticed. Marisa A. Caiola The Pool Swimming is said to be one of the healthiest ways to keep fit. Manhattanville students have taken this point to heart and have proven their loyalty towards this exercise by frequently dipping their bodies into the cool swimming pool in the Kennedy Gym, a 25-meter construction divided into 6 lanes. It is a pool both for those who simply come to relax while paddling to and fro, and for the more serious participants who glide through the water lap after lap. Whatever the motives, whatever the reasons, whether to have fun or to stay in shape, the lifeguards are alert, and the pool remains a favorite on-campus hangout. Margit Schmid A Place to Unwind Walk in any time during the week and you’ll see the same thing: students working hard to stay in top physical shape. Over the years, the Manhattanville weightroom has been more than just a place with Nautilus equipment. As students who work hard and play hard, we take pride in our health and fitness. The weightroom continues to serve as a place where we can socialize with others and relieve our anxieties over theses and portfolios. In our continued efforts to find academic and personal excellence, the weightroom has disciplined us to meet success with good, physical health. Elizabeth A. Contegni ■I T l ! ___ New York City New York City is a complement to the Manhattanville Community. One of the most renowned cities in the world, it inevitably offers a variety of culture, entertainment, and education. The diverse culture in the City is emphasized by small communities of different nationalities. Each sector, from Chinese to Italian, offers a taste of its traditional heritage. Entertainment is unlimited — from fine dining in a midtown Manhattan restaurant, to a pub lunch in the heart of Greenwich Village. The variety of plays, ballets, and concerts provides entertainment to suit all desires. The United Nations, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with exhibitions held year round, are all educational attractions for groups of students as well as the individual. After traveling, seeing different places, and meeting new people, one realizes why New York City is looked upon as an extremely influential part of the world. It is important to appreciate the City while being so close to it, and most of all, to take advantage of everything it has to offer. Well, don’t be — all that action represents is the definition of convocation . . . simply stated, ‘called together to a meeting.’ So, let the meeting begin.” With those words, President Marcia Savage officially began the 1986-87 academic year at the Convocation ceremony held Sept. 10. Fittingly, President Savage ended the Fall semester with another gathering, another celebration. This time the “meeting” was held, not in the chapel, but at the President’s cottage, which was appropriately decorated for a Christmas celebration. Students, faculty and administration gathered to discuss the events of the semester and their plans for vacation, as well as the up-coming Spring semester. As Pres. Savage said in her Convocation address, “We are, as individuals, as a nation, as a group, as an academic community, a reflection of what we have been as well as a reflection of the hopes and expectations of who we will become.” Genevieve Lopez ml 8 %4|J s a i; t . ■ It 4 % M W 9 hi 1 L J m:. “ P .19 w 6 .(qytfvyif fllfUTT W IV WHAT’S good PQDvnu Ortyorw TUI. Learning to balance the checkbook was a fine art soon acquired. Homecooked meals became a delicacy. Each of us found a new pet — Charlie the Cockroach. None of us will ever forget the infamous preceptorial class, or will we? And how about that first all-nighter trying to learn eighteen chapters of sociology in less than ten hours? Probably the most important is a bet¬ ter communication line between the station itself and the listening audience. What is desired is not only for WMVL to be a source of a wide scope of musical entertainment, but also a source of campus news, world news, and events occuring around the tri-state area for the benefit of the Manhattanville community. Other concerns for WMVL this year will be an extensive plan for the increase and improvement of our radio signal so that the entire campus may share in the enjoyment. Also, major renovations will be occuring inside the radio station this year as WMVL wishes to present itself as a professionally- run radio station inside and out. By the time this is read in Tower 1987, we at WMVL hope the work we will have achieved will speak for itself. All it takes is the desire and incentive to make it happen. I feel that this year’s staff has just that, and I am very honored to work with them. I thank you. This is accomplished through a variety of activi¬ ties and meetings. The group has been fortunate to be able to fellowship with a group just started at SUNY Purchase called B.A.S.I.C. (Brothers and Sisters in Christ), which we expect will bring revival to all nearby campuses. In all activities our main objective is to glorify the name of God and Jesus, his son and our Savior. We also strive to encourage greater knowl¬ edge of God on a personal level, through attending a local church and home group meetings as well as prayer meetings at SUNY Purchase. By attracting a diverse cross-section of students and faculty, we have tried to broaden people’s knowledge of the world we all share. Focuses on different countries help both American and foreign students get a taste of life in other cultures. Foreign students’ adjustment to this country is facilitated by discussions with Americans, as well as by participation in the trips, such as our annual visit to the United Nations, which is a club favorite. This year our biggest event, the International Dinner Dance, was held in February, to allow more preparation time for this campus¬ wide extravaganza. A new club activity was our involvement in Amnesty International, for which we wrote numerous letters of hope to political prisoners around the world. We feel that membership in this club will be of life¬ long value to all those who were a part of this special group. Ruth M. The Intercollegiate Program is founded on that old-fashioned principle of educating the “whole person.’’ In light of the College’s be¬ lief that in a residential, liberal arts institu¬ tion, important learning does occur outside the formal classroom walls, extracurricular activities all become not only important parts of student culture, but essential to what it means to be educated. The Intercollegiate Athletic Program is in¬ tended to supplement and enrich the first priority of campus life: academic accomplish¬ ment. Each athletic program is designed, therefore, with this emphasis in mind. Classes always take precedence and yet, within this philosophy, Manhattanville College teams each year take on demanding and challeng¬ ing schedules in the belief that good students can find real growth and meaning in their athletic participation. Upon entering the season, Toth was taking over a team that held a dismal 1-13 record in 1985. The Va¬ liants 15-game schedule included three na¬ tionally ranked opponents and a host of other state powerhouses, but Toth had positive re¬ actions at the tough schedule. “Playing against tough competition can only help your team. We adjusted well to these quality pro¬ grams and the girls know what it takes to make a winner.” The stickers picked up four wins on the season and lost four contests by a one goal margin. “At the start of the season our goal was to become a more aggressive team,” Toth stat¬ ed, “and we dominated many of our games, even the ones we came up shorthanded in.” The Valiants gained a lot of confidence in each other, and their positive attitudes changed the whole tone of the season. They know they have what it takes to bring winning back to Manhattanville. With the entire field hockey squad return¬ ing in 1987, one can only bet that the Va¬ liants will return with the makings of a quality collegiate program, something Manhattan¬ ville field hockey followers are familiar with. Led by senior captain Sheila Finn, the Va¬ liants were 2-0 on the week, also registering a convincing 127-65 win over Mt. St. Vincent. Finn, a triple-winner in both meets, displayed her consistent form, winning the 100 back- stroke, 200 backstroke, the 500 freestyle, while also swimming a leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay team. The Valiant freshmen standout Kathy Cardon was a dou¬ ble-winner in both meets, with victories in the 100 free and 200 1M. Against Iona, Julie Jannotti was victorious in the 50 free and 200 back, while freshman Christine Homon regis¬ tered double wins in the 100 and 200 back- stroke. Against Smith earlier in the season, Collins was quite pleased with his team’s overall showing, and cited some fine individ¬ ual efforts. “Sheila (Finn) and Kathy (Carden) once again dominated their events, and Julie (Jannotti) dropped 15 seconds off the 200 fly.” Collins also praised Cathy Blunk and Christins Homon, both of whom made their season debut, for swimming well in their relay and breastroke events. Manhattanville seeded 12 out of the 16-team pool. On Nov. 8, Coach Arnie Rosenbaum and squad picked up their 30th victory of the season, the most in the sport’s seven-year history. On the season, the Va¬ liants participated in four regular season tournaments, and according to Rosenbaum, that made the difference for his team. “The competition in those tournaments is basically what prepares us best for post-season play.” No coach is pleased to see a season end, especially when the year was highlighted by both fine individual and team efforts, but Ro¬ senbaum can look to next season with even higher hopes as his whole squad will return. As far as the goals of Rosenbaum and his program in the upcoming year, “We will shoot for our third state tournament appear¬ ance, and we hope to improve our ranking among state competition.” He added, “The accomplishments that this team has made should stay with the program for a long time. Our attitudes are now geared towards suc¬ cess. Taking over a team that went 2-13 the pre¬ vious year, and welcoming eight freshmen, gave Moyer reason to believe it would be a rebuilding year. Indeed it was, but the Va¬ liants turned things around quicker than many people expected. For starters, the Va¬ liants won their first two games of the season, and doubled their total wins from the pre¬ vious year, concluding the season with a 4- 11-1 mark. Head Coach Moyer, the motivating force behind the team’s turnaround, was pleased with his first season and looks to the future with great optimism. “We are a young team, so with the youth came inexperience and mis¬ takes, but the players learned a great deal and that can only help build the future of our program.” The Valiants, aside from their numerous achievements, were hit hard with injuries to¬ wards the end of the season. “Injuries played a major role in our downfall at the end of the year. We played the last few games with only two or three subs, and we were without the services of key players,” Moyer added. 1986 can be marked as a year of accom¬ plishments, but the future of Manhattanville soccer looks even brighter. A strong nucleus of eight starters and fourteen letterwinners will return in 1987. Indeed the groundwork has been laid for a successful program. 9 6 vs. Bard W 9 9 vs. Dominican W 9 11 vs. Manhattan L 9 13 vs. King’s L 9 18 vs. Stony Brook L 9 20 vs. Lehman T 9 23 vs. SUNY Purchase W 9 27 vs. Merchant Marine L 10 1 vs. Vassar L 10 7 vs. NYU L 10 13 vs. Old Westbury W 10 18 vs. Nyack L 10 20 vs. SUNY Maritime L 10 25 vs. Hunter L 10 31 vs. SUNY Albany L 11 1 vs. Utica L RECORD: 4-11-1 Back Row: Head Coach Paul Moyer, Devon Clark, Carlos Guerriro, Frank Costello, Len Shokum, DeMille Halliburton, Michael Nichols, Dave Cuite, Marlon Nurse, Bill McKenna Front Row: Adnan Lone, Eric Moody, Wilmar Arango, Doug Allen, Chris Uzzo, Ruddel Deceus, Ambrose Wotorson, Larry Littler, Mike Brodeur, Oliver Lindner Women’s Soccer 9 6 VS. The Valiant soccer quad was shorthanded, as key injuries trimmed down the size of the team. However, a mix of youth and veteran players did result in consistent play despite the deceiving re¬ cord. Fifth-year coach Martin, who had led the program to four straight winning seasons, was straightforward about the disappointing year. “Anytime you have a losing record it’s frustrating, especially when your program has been successful. We can’t look at our season as a failure because of our record. We accomplished a lot and we steadily improved with each game.’’ Looking ahead to next sea¬ son, Martin added, “We had a large group of newcomers, and with a year of college exper¬ ience under their belts, we’ll be able to con¬ centrate on more specific areas of the game.” Seniors closing out their Manhattanville soccer careers were tri-captains Theresa Ca- lahan, Cathy Klaschka and Donna Walsh. One more victory and one loss fol¬ lowed before the Valiants met one of their biggest challenges of the season: Trinity Col¬ lege. The Valiants dominated the fast-paced contest, and walked away victorious. “Our all-out hustle proved to be the factor. We controlled the tempo the entire game, and against a tough team like Trinity, it made a difference,” an elated Coach Ralph Tedesco remarked following the victory. On Dec. 12 at the Kennedy Gym, the Valiant hoopsters dazzled a full house in their victory over Pur¬ chase with a record-breaking score of 124 points. This broke the old school record of 120 pts. vs. Sarah Lawrence, which was set in 1974. The Valiants cut their semester break short as they travelled to the Hamilton Tour¬ nament Jan. 10 and 11. The Valiants opened the season with a 65-58 loss to Wellesley, but Coach Larry Holten’s squad quickly bounced back with a convinc¬ ing 64-49 victory over Brandeis. This was followed by a 71-23 win over Bard in the first home game of the season. In opening round action of the Manhattan- ville Alumnae Tournament, the Valiants came away with a solid 3-1 mark, defeating Stony Brook, Sacred Heart, and Hartwick, while falling to Bridgewater State. Eight-year mentor Larry Holten was pleased with his squad’s performance against Division II Sa¬ cred Heart. “We shut down their inside game. Despite their size, we dominated the boards, and controlled the tempo of the game. It was a great overall team effort.” Team effort also helped bring Manhattanville to victory over the strong Oneonta team. 1986 has certainly ended on a winning note for the lady Valiants. Intramural sports are typically more casual, less competitive opportunities for dorms and student groups to participate in athletic events. With eight to ten large- scale events planned each year, the majority of Manhattanville students can generally find a particular area of athletic interest. Major attractions include the men’s and women’s basketball leagues, spring volleyball coed tournaments, flag football, tennis, and the unusual inner-tube water polo competition. The Fall Field Festival kicks off the intramural year in early fall, and each season promises to provide the students with year-round team participation and entertainment. 175 STUDENT DIRECTORY — A — Abbondanza, Jon 1612 Kennelworth Place Bronx, NY 10465 Abeidna, Sid Ahmed C O Sogeco, P.O.
