GENESIS In the beginning there was sound and the sound was heard and translated by the sense of man into the spoken word. And that word was a bond between men that they might listen and speak to themselves and to each other. And that line which was an instrument of sound extended itself and became the set of a jaw. A countenance was beginning to form, a character beginning to take shape. Communications led to understanding and the countenance moved toward the outline of a human face. The shading spoke of individual differences. of unique qualities and of the growth of individuals. The shading grew more distinct. New senses began to develop. The sense of smell. Even odors became individualized, an essence distinctly personal, unoffensive, except to those who could not yet understand the experience. The sense of taste. The formation of a mouth. Two lips to smile, to frown, to remain passive 2
