Students for a Democratic Society exists at Manhattanville only in so far as there are people who are interested. SDS ranges from so-called activists to devoted non-members who are willing to support SDS-sponsored events because they believe in the organization’s underlying principles. Both of thes e ideals may be summed up in the SDS motto, Let the People Decide.” But first people must know. On the college campus, this process involves a willingness to recognize the relevance of world-sized issues as well as the in¬ dividual worlds of those around us. Through meetings, discussions, and lectures, SDS keeps the channels open to serve as a gadfly and to avoid the creation of an atmosphere of alienation. Cannon Daniel E. Woods A Classic is something that is gen¬ erally considered worthy of survival. In order to survive meaningfully a Classic must be understood. Light must clearly reveal it; its quality, its truth, its value, its significance, its importance; not only for that time it first saw the light, but especially for now, today. The past is always with us. The Greek and Roman past is still a large part of us, our religion, our language, our literature, our philosophy, our art. In order to un¬ derstand ourselves, we must under¬ stand our beginnings. The Classics help to light our way. Lux fiat. That is what they are attempting to do at Manhattanville. 94 Edward W. Destructiveness is the outcome at any age of the unlived life. Lucille Ann Lohmeier 96 Robert J. Kingston William J. Phillips You will forgive us if sometimes we have stood be¬ tween you and the book, casting only dark shadows toward you. Our eyes are not always of the best; and there are times, too, when it is comforting to turn one’s back to the fire. Yet there are some labors for which darkness is light enough.” And it may be that, when we step aside, you will find yourselves, after all, looking in the right direction. Singer Science, like institutions, progresses by change. But there are some things in science that do not change — the law of entropy. There are also institutional things that do not change. These immutables are principles which form tradition. Progress and tradition should play complemen¬ tary roles in the life of a college. Ill In the short pleasant span of my existence at Manhattanville it has often seemed that most of my associates (colleagues and stu¬ dents) placed an emphasis on two of the three R’s (once suggested as descriptive of the Democratic Party). Whether or not this casts light or darkness, the combina¬ tions have proved congenial and I don’t think it is likely to change. 112 John Galloway Joseph McDermott Hoping for a better world is absurd. On these grounds is sentence pronounced: that though the light has come into the world men have shown they prefer darkness to the light because their deeds are evil. And indeed, everybody who does wrong hates the light and avoids it, for fear his actions should be exposed; but the man who lives by the truth comes out into the light, so that it may be plainly seen that what he does is done in God.
