dedication Between the broad horizons of an academic atmosphere — huge ideas, wide ranging speculations, life affecting decisions — the small necessities of merely living can too easily be made to seem insignificant. Yet, the student’s reaction to petty detail, the manner in which she meets the minutiae of life determine her overall development of spirit. Thus the true measure of a student can only be known in the terms of her day to day existence. If the long trek from Freshman to Senior year is a movement towards maturity for us, this is due in great part to Mother Blank. The gathering of four hundred dis¬ parate, often highly opinionated girls under one roof could be a descent into the chaos of squabbling or the mindless order of regimentation. Because of Mother Blank, dormitory life is neither. Rather it becomes one valuable facet of the total education which Manhattanville seeks to impart. No problem has ever been too petty for Mother Blank’s consideration, no request too trivial for careful weighing. Hers is not adherence to the letter of the law. Instead she provides a framework in which every girl is free to develop according to her individual bent, while impressing on her the fact that discipline and sacrifice are the foundations of community living. And it is precisely this discipline, gently but thoroughly taught, for which we are most grateful. Gradually we begin to divine something of the wisdom which leads us kindly yet firmly towards a knowledge of what it is to live with others, of how to give and receive in the exigencies of ordinary life, of how to construct and maintain a Christian society in a Christian spirit. And if, when we leave the walls of Founders and the hills of Purchase, we are able to make a meaningful contribution to the communities in which we shall dwell, it is because of that wisdom. All of us living in Founders, all of us who will someday take up residence there, all of us everywhere who have known her, salute the face Mother Blank has turned towards us. It is the face of concern, of good humor, of wry firmness when firmness has been necessary. For all the little presents you have given us, for all the thought¬ fulness in small circumstances, which when added together total an overwhelming gift of love, we thank you Mother Blank, and in gratitude dedicate this yearbook to you. 5
