THE HEART is the source of life and the symbol of love. The Heart of Christ is the fount of a sacred life and the living symbol of Love itself. The Sacred Heart is the core of Manhattanville,— it is thence we draw our way of life, a life of study and fun and prayer, our way of worship that turns each day’s work and play into prayer. A life based on Love is steeped in holiness: if we live in Love, we give of ourselves and we will give Christ. MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE OF THE SACRED HEART PURCHASE, NEW YORK

TO HIS EMINENCE FRANCIS CARDINAL SPELLMAN WITH HEARTFELT GRATITUDE FOR HIS VISION AND COURAGE HIS FATHERLY INTEREST IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE OF THE SACRED HEART OCTOBER 27, 1957. His Eminence Francis Cardinal Spellman received many honors in 1957 on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of his Episcopal Consecration. The Cardinal’s world-wide apostolate paid tribute to the integration, in his person, of vision and practicality. Manhattanville’s own tribute to His Eminence was the dedication of its new dormitory, Spellman Hall, last autumn. It was a significant dedication. The Cardinal had showed a vital interest in the Manhattanville of Convent Avenue; he was instrumental in establishing this same Manhattanville in its new surroundings in Purchase, and his continued benevolence is apparent in his frequent visits to our growing campus. This is but a fraction of our debt to His Eminence. We owe him reverence and appreciation, not only as a benefactor of Manhattanville, but also as a militant exemplar of American Catholicism and a Shepherd of tireless vigilance. With profound gratitude and respect, we dedicate the 1958 Tower to His Eminence. We are privileged to use the Cardinal’s own words as a timely message, not only for the benefit of our own graduates, but for all Christian Youth. “Let us make haste—but only back to Christ; Let us go on—but by a -prayerful way; Let us arise with all the noble souls Who form the mighty host of God ' s elect , Who heed His voice and humbly follow Him. America has need of men like these.
