President’s Library —o— Manhattanville PRESENTED BY THE CLASS OF 1959 THE HEART is the source of life and the symbol of love. The Heart of Christ is the fount of a sacred life and the living symbol of Love itself. The Sacred Heart is the core of Manhattanville,— it is thence we draw our way of life, a life of study and fun and prayer, our way of worship that turns each day’s work and play into prayer. A life based on Love is steeped in holiness: if we live in Love, we give of ourselves and we will give Christ. MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE OF THE SACRED HEART PURCHASE, NEW YORK THE HEART OF MANHATTANVILLE i mt, sae | i JF u t; J i ' l i TO HIS EMINENCE FRANCIS CARDINAL SPELLMAN WITH HEARTFELT GRATITUDE FOR HIS VISION AND COURAGE HIS FATHERLY INTEREST IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE OF THE SACRED HEART OCTOBER 27, 1957. His Eminence Francis Cardinal Spellman received many honors in 1957 on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of his Episcopal Consecration. The Cardinal’s world-wide apostolate paid tribute to the integration, in his person, of vision and practicality. Manhattanville’s own tribute to His Eminence was the dedication of its new dormitory, Spellman Hall, last autumn. It was a significant dedication. The Cardinal had showed a vital interest in the Manhattanville of Convent Avenue; he was instrumental in establishing this same Manhattanville in its new surroundings in Purchase, and his continued benevolence is apparent in his frequent visits to our growing campus. This is but a fraction of our debt to His Eminence. We owe him reverence and appreciation, not only as a benefactor of Manhattanville, but also as a militant exemplar of American Catholicism and a Shepherd of tireless vigilance. With profound gratitude and respect, we dedicate the 1958 Tower to His Eminence. We are privileged to use the Cardinal’s own words as a timely message, not only for the benefit of our own graduates, but for all Christian Youth. “Let us make haste—but only back to Christ; Let us go on—but by a -prayerful way; Let us arise with all the noble souls Who form the mighty host of God ' s elect , Who heed His voice and humbly follow Him. America has need of men like these. SPELLMAN HALL FOUNDERS’ LOUNGE BROWNSON ACADEMIC BUILDING OF STUDY. . . The members of our faculty offer the priceless gifts of their knowledge and talents— they inspire us as living examples of Catholic intellectualism. Especially in Senior year, when all the work of the past years is synthesized, do we really begin to appreciate the immensity of our debt to them. Each of us receives a certain character from the class to which she belongs. Whether that character be enthusiasm, ingenuity, geniality, or some other, it is inescapable and inevitably makes itself felt in our lives. But every class is composed of individuals, each contributing her person to the whole. We mold and are molded by our individual classes and by our individual classmates, as well. In a larger sense, however, we are united as members of the same college. Through a oneness of purpose and a common devotion to the Sacred Heart we are bound together. Whether our contacts be academic, extra-curricular, or purely social, friendships offered and accepted transcend the ties of class and group and we receive six hundredfold our initial gift of self. 13 CELIA CATHERINE BUTLER Art History Meriwether Farms, Brookeville, Maryland Garrison Forest School, Garrison, Maryland Life ' s heart , a blossoming fire Blown bright by thought. -ABRAHAM ROSENBACH 16 VIRGINIA MARY CASSERLY Practical Art 142 Fairview Avenue, South Orange, New Jersey Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child, Summit, New Jersey Nature I loved , and next to nature , art; I warmed both hands before the fire of life.
