They had made lt' They passed the fresh men exams, got thell celtlflcate of plomotlon and were ready to Stalt the fl1St yeal of high school to be known as the llttle sophomores One hundled flfty strong they enteled the halls of MHS ln Septembel to enloll pay thell fees, establish locker paltners, and Just look 31 ound a building that was almost completely new to them The following Monday they en teled the dools with books under then alms leldy to meet the oncoming lush of loldly Junlols and seniors. The Fighting Littles, the G.R.-Hi-Y pl' y included six sophomores in the cast and stage crew. When the curtain rose October 13 Kathryn Maxwell Irene Vail Marvin Hunt and Pat Smith were ready to make their de- buts' and Ralph Feaford and Joe Skinner were assisting behind the scene. The sopho- mores worked hard, alld helped to make the play a success. The Sophomore Shindiv was held October 27 in the boys gym where every one present enjoyed dancing games, and refreshments. Ronnie Short, chairman of the dance commit- tee was assisted by Jackie Compton Frances Stover, Nadine Breed, Virginia Bross, Roy Wilbur Don Woolf, and Charles Doryland. The sponsors were Mrs. Smith and Mrs. New- bery. The refreshment committee consisted of Irene Vail, chairman Jo Ann Winter Wayne Holm, Mary Lou Van Bl'il'Cl1l'11 Pat Smith, Ruth Neff, and Marguerite Fitch. Miss Zipse and Miss Marley were sponsors. Chris- tine Knight, chairman of the games commit- tee, had the following assistants: Ruth Bell- nett, Adella Boyd, Marjorie Schmedemann, Dol-is Meyer, and Helen Janes. Jim Knight and Ken DeBerg made signs for the party. When plctules of the Pigskin Plom Queen and king candidates appealed Jackie Comp ton, Nadine Bleed and Ilene Vail wele found to be the sophomole candidates fol queen, and Ronnie Short and Joe Sklnnel were can dldates fol king ovel the Pigskin Pl JITI which was held Novemllel 17 Although two seniors lelgfletl the sophomole cl iss was ploud of 1t5 1 epl esentatlves Up and coming lthletes who displayed thell tllent ind Cellflefl ICSGIVL lettels lll football from the sophomore class were Joe Skinner and Zane Hanks. Many others were presented their numerals, and will show up lllol'e next year on the field. The Colddiggers and Signature Dances were two big school events the class of 48 will long remember especially the funny C01'- sages they presented their dates at the Gold- dlgers and the surprise when the Blue M queell was 'l.IlllOUllCCtl and the presentation of the Blue M at the Signature Dance. 'Ihese were the things that made their first year at high school such a success. They were glad they had elected such efficient officers as Mary Lou Van Blarcum for president Mary Lou Tll0ll1pS0ll as vice-president and Nadine Breed for SOCl'0t'tl'y-t1'C'lSl.l1'Ll'. And they were glad they had been so well represented in the Student Council by Christine knight and R-llph Teaford. The year was indeed a successful one. It was YV0llllCl'fUl to be a part of a school like Man- hattan High, entering in the activities, meet- ing new friends alld teachers. It was as op- portunity to make the most of.
