Maw Schwartz vice president Lay ecletarx tleasuier Comoton nreident September, 1943 brought 149 piosptctnc SQYIIOIS to the halls of MHS Little did me realize how much the next thiee veirs would ter the first few weeks Having four sophomores captule impoitant ioles in the H1 Y G R play, Sixteen in Aug ust brought us lowly sophs to the limelight Two others represented us on the stage cicw. With this to boost our ego, we overcame our shyness enough to sign up for various Fi -'- skin Prom committees. Mary Alice Victor and Irma Lee Simonton were both eandidatts for Queen from our class and Johnny Busenbark and L. D. Compton held their own for King. Bobby Srack and Millie Domino reijncd. We remember the Prom now as a wonderful par- ty and winning the CKL Championship made it all the more glorious. We had started the year off right by tlect- ing Bill Daly as class president with Wally Whitney and Maxine Yenawine as his assist- ants. All this totaled up to a swell semester especially with Don Buster and Johnny Bus- enbark serving our class on the Student Coun- c . February 12 gave the girls a ch-mee to pay the boys back at the Golddiggers Ball spon- sored by the junior class. After recovering from this we were asked to serve 'it thc Jun- ior-Senior Banquet and Dance. April 22 was the sophomore party. This and the Blue M Dance ended a rcally swtll year. And so we bade farewell to the seniors of 44 and looked forward to our second yuir at MHS At last summer was here and ou1 thoughts xx eie of swimming, tennis, wo1k1nf.,, golf, and bascb ill, and it wasn t until August that wc hold in store for us Imagine oui imazcment when again we tiudged ba k to 'VIHS to find th it tht insti tutlon had h id its face lifted' The halls smell ed of fresh paint in the audltoiium we saw not only a new paint job, but a new maroon curtain with drapts to match. Fred Rogers Dick Morse, and Gloria Wil- son led us in our class activities as president vice-president and secretary-treasurer - sptetively. Norma Lou Myers and John Weigel represented us on the Council, with Don Buster and Johnny Busenbark as ex-of- fieio members. Among tl'e five cheerleaders chosen, Shirley King and Billie Rickard were from our class. When the Hi-Y-G. R. play, llane Crazy , rolled around Frtd Rogers, Guy Marlow, Roger Sommtrs, Ken Robinson, Norma Lou Myers, Corinne Holm, Lenore Holmquist, and If dwina Frick all succeeded in giving a fine performance showing their ability as future fl1 llllBl.lSllS. L. D. Campton, Paul Schwartz, Bill Ma- chin lcon Bolts Pill Eidson were on the CKL winning team with Johnny Busenbark and Bill Hosicr being, elected co-captains for the com- ing, seison. To climax the triumphs of the season our second Pigskin Prom'was high- lighted by h-wing Paul Schwartz Johnny Busenbark, I.. D. During the two-day confer- ence he spoke to the membership of the Hi-Y and G. R., the student body and conducted pcrsonal conferences. A sectional Hi-Y conference was held April 15 in Manhattan. Approximately 120 dele- gates attended the meeting from the central area of Kansas. They 11 ere divided into five discussion groups. The climax of the meeting' was a banquet held in the evening. D'. Slutz from Cleveland Ohio acted as leader of the conference. The Hi-Y and G. R. have combined on sev- eral occasions this year. Coaches: Clark, Slayton, Elder CGACH ES Bill Slayton, head coach of football and track, came to our school from the North American Plant in Kansas City, Mo. There he had charge of a large athletic and recreation program for war workers. Before the war, he was head coach for eleven years at Chillicothe Business College in St. Joseph, Missouri. He had many championship teams in the past and had a fine coaching record. His football squads use the T formation as the basis of all their plays and it has been said that Mr. Slayton knows more about running the T then anyone in Kansas. With a good back- ground and plenty of coaching experience, he has also a likable personality, and out- standing qualities of character. Mr. Slayton has a great deal of drive and he worked hard to build up an A-1 team this season, however the odds were against him when it came to material for strategic positions and injuries to the first team members. This was Mr. Slay- ton's first year of coaching at MHS and he holds the respect and friendship of all. Keith Elder, also new at MHS, is head basketball coach and in charge of the B squad football team. Mr. Elder graduated from the Fort Hays State Teachers College and played one year of professional football before he sta1'ted coaching. Becoming htad athletic coach at Belleville, Kansas, he coached out- standing teams for three years bt fore -:dining to Manhattan. Here he has succeeded in making a basketball team that has made 'the best showing in years. including' the fact that they twice beat Junction City, Mr. Elder also has classes in hygiene and gym and he has proved to be an all around favorite of . dents and faculty. s,,,,,...-..,,,h -.Jvx Bill Clark, assistant coach, is the oldest member of the coaching staff. He teaches regular classes in commerce but spends most of his after school hours working with the beginners in athletics or taking pictures for the school. Mr. Clark graduated from Pitts- burg State Teachers College and was assist- ant coach to Charles Socolofsky, at Hiawatha, before he came to Manhattan four ytazrs ago. CADTAIN5 Two co-captains were selected for the 1945 season, but only one of them was able to play this year. Bill Hosier enlisted in the Naxy and was called just a few days after school started. Bill was a letterman from the season before and would have been a real asset to the team, had he been able to play. He was able to go out for practice a few times be- fore he hung up his jersey and paddinggs an.i replaced them with bell bottom trousers. With plenty of spirit and well liked by every boy, Bill was an outstanding player and had proved his ability in the 1944 season. His leadership and talent would have helped a lot this season. Bill took his boot training at San Diego, California, and is now stationed at Tsingtao, China. Johnny Busenbark, the other co-captain, held the position of guard and won his second letter in football this season. He started off the year with brilliant prospects but illness caused him to miss a good deal of playing time. He has been a member of the M Club for the past two years and was president in his senior year. Johnny served on the Stu- dent Council every year he was in senior high and was always a leader in school events. He played the trumpet in band and orchestra and was in the swing band in his junior year. Johnny's spirit and personality made him an ideal captain.
