Student COUDCII The Student Counc1l Manhattan Hrgh Schools governrng body has done some outstandrng work th1s year At the begrnnrng of the year the Coun c1l drvrded rts program rnto three parts plannrng for the pleasure development and good trmes of the students and faculty servrce related to the war school school sprrrt and reputatron among the schools of Kansas Members of the governrng body were elected by the students last sprrng and took over actrve duty rn the fall The Councrl rs composed of Drck Na bours and Elarne Howenstrne senrors Johnny Wergel and Norma Lou Myers Junrors Marrlyn Martrn and Shrrley Barham sophomores Mary Ann Burgwrn representatrve at large and ex of flcers Carolyn Glover Brll Edwards Johnny Busen bark Don Buster and Rlchard Cederberg who re placed Dorothy Stover on the Councrl The faculty sponsor rs Mr Roy Durham Offrcers elected by the Counc1l are Mary Ann Burgwrn presrdent Drck Nabours vrce presrdent Elarne Howenstrne secretary Marrlyn Martrn treasurer and Shrrley Barham correspondrng sec retary For the srxth consecutrve year the Councrl s frrst project was the tea for new students and faculty September 15 Th1s rntroduces the new members to students and actrvrtres of M H S Several commrttees were set up by the Councrl to deal wrth problems and needs of the school Capable charrmen appornted were War Memorral Commrttee Dean Wmter Publrcrty Jrm Balder son Stamps and Bonds Barbara Bamford Paulrne Evans and Hays Beck Outstandrng work has been accomplrshed th1s year rn the sellrng of stamps and bonds Carolyn Glover was rn charge of hav rng football programs prrnted for each game For the Manhattan vs McPherson game specral 16 page programs were presented to the fans A thousand copres contarnrng wrrte ups and prctures of the Progress M' hrouoa two teams were sold Don Buster Ralph Drc-kens Charl s Walker and Ross Mrller sold ads and plan ned the make up of th1s proJect A Durhamburger fry was grv en for the Counc1l by Mr Durham October 12 wrth the obrectrve of polrshrng and strarghtenrng all trophres rn the trophy cases All members were greeted at the door by Mr Durham rn a charmrng ruf fled apron' A V Day program was developed by the Student Councrl rn cooper atron vxrth the Junror Hrgh Coun c1l Thrs rs to be a trrbute to all those who have served therr country and especrally those who have grven therr lrves And to create enthusrasm for the Prgskrn Prom throughout the school the Coun crl presented a novel assembly program starrrng Mr Durham as Prrnce Alr Unbendo Peerrng rnto was' For the nrnth consecutrve year the Councrl has sponsored the Prgskrn Prom to clrmax the foot ball season Wrth the cooper atron of all commrttees and therr chairmen the Prom was made one of the socral hrgh lrghts of the year Then on Decem ber 20 mth the completron of the Prom and then program well under way Mr Durham took the Councll to drnner at the Grllett Hotel A successful basketball banquet was planned bv the Pep Club vuth the cooperatron of the Student Councrl Dr Forrest C 1Phogl Allen famous K U basketball coach was the guest speaker at thrs March 23rd event In the rnterest of the crty the Student Counc1l provrded for a dandelron day late rn the sprrnf' to take the place of student day last year All students spent the day beaurfyrnff the crty park by drggrng dandelrons The all school electron vras held rn Aprrl so that new members of the Councrl may acquarnt them selves mth next years problems and brrng help ful rmprovements to the eyes of the Councrl The Student Councrl of 1944 and 45 has had a successful year and hopes to leave some long range plans to be carrred out through the years These plans rnclude l A large trophy case rn the hall sponsored by the Student Councrl mth the frnancral help of the Board of Educatron Thrs trophy case wrll be burlt to hold the trophres M H S wrll vxrn rn the fu ture 2 To rnclude rn the student fees or rn the cost of the actrvrty trcket a fee of S100 to be used to prosrde some frne programs for the students 8 ,u 1 v '- ' C A. 4' C A , A As ' rw nfl! wmwtm 'bw-1 -may SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS left to Right Ernest Ponce Secretary Treasurer Tom Plan nelly Presldent Ross Mxller Vxce Presldent It was a bught and sunny day September 7 1942 when 165 future raduates entered the halls of Manhattan Hlgh School We knew we were the class of 45 because we had seen It on some of the wh1te football sweatels but somehow 1t seemed very far away We sophomores entered r1ght 1nto the full swlng of thlngs by electlng R1chard Cederberg class pres ldent and h1S assxstants Ray Thompson and Ruth Whltnah We began the soc1al wh1rl by attendlng the Prom It was ou1 f11st school dance and so we were rather shy We were 1nterested 1n the f1ne1 arts too mamly d1ama We lost slx of our bunch for one week so they could lend thelr talents to the H1 Y G R play The Very Llght Br1gade Weeks passed and once ln a whlle we read our names ln the g0SSlD column or fashlon sect1on of the Mentor Came February and we were guests of the Jun1o1 class at the annual Golddlggers Ball Next came spr1ng and the well known fever that comes w1th It Whlle wandermg around ln a daze we were asked to serve at both the Semor Jumor and the Jumor Sen1o1 Our thlfd and almost last party of the year was one for the sophomores and no one else It was our Sophomole Party Fmally came the Blue M S1gnature Dance Th1s was our f1rst annual from our school so we trred our best to get everyones slgnature We bade the sen1ors farewell and sa1d to the rest See you 1n September Summer came and we all spent our tlme ln the Swlmmlhg pool and workmg By the t1me school started we were all brown as Indlans should be and hterally plastered wlth freckles W1th the startmg of school there came an ep1dem1c of Jalop1es to the new Jumor class Most of the boys bought new 19+ cars many of whxch had seen then' best days 15 years before There were b1own and yellow ones black ones tan ones red ones and var1ous other OHHUTTUW colors They all had names pamted on them such as Zombxe RAT Meat Wagon and Ve1on1ca Agam we entered the halls of M H S only 1n stead of be1ng shy we tued to lmpress the frlght ened sophomores of that year w1th our knowledge gamed dur1ng the precedmg year We began our year w1th a bang by electmg Ray Thompson pres 1dent of the Jun1o1 class and to asslst hlm Ape Flannelly and Elame Howenstlne B111 Edwards and Dozothy Stover represented us on the Student Counc1l w1th Carolyn Glover and Gale Kloeffle1 ex 0ff1Cl0 members One of our cheerleaders Joyce Fxom ou1 class our all vxctouous football team drew sever al of 1ts D1 omxnent members Ted Gr1mes Tom Flannelly DICK Nabours Kay Cleavlnger Er nest Pence B111 Edwards Bernard Dallmga Dav1d Lewls Ralph D1ckens J1m Balderson and Ray Thompson Kay Cleavmger and Ted Gr1mes were chosen to be the co captalns of the football team for our senxor year To Cllmax our champ1onsh1p football seasonvue had a Prom that was outstandlng Jo Harrlett Hofsess Ruth Wh1tnah Mary Ann Bur gwln Joan Stemex and Carolyn Glover were queen candxdates from our class D1ck Nabours Ray Thompson Tom Flannelly Ted Gr1mes and Kay Cleavxngex were the Jumor candldates for kmg On the nlght of February 12 we the Jumor Class sponsored the Go1dd1ggers Ball The party was managed by Dorothy Stover Ross Mxller B111 John ston and Jo Harrxett Hofsess We had our candidates for the honor of Blue M Queen too They were Jo Harrlett Hofsess Vera Jackson Carolyn Glover and Ruth Whltnah These were the four Jumors that were terr1f1c rlvals to the senxor candxdates We went on and on to school and after many weeks the monotony was 10 Q 1 , i L , . 4 x -ww 4 aim an - f 1 A ' - , - : ' - . : ' .
